Hybrid Alginate@TiO2 Porous Microcapsules as a Reservoir of Animal Cells for Cell Therapy.

The number of patients suffering from diseases linked with hormone deficiency (e.g., type 1 diabetes mellitus) has significantly increased in recent years. As organ transplantation presents its limits, the design of novel robust devices for cell encapsulation is of great interest. The current study reports the design of a novel hybrid alginate microcapsule reinforced by titania via a biocompatible synthesis from an aqueous stable titania precursor (TiBALDH) and a cationic polyamine (PDDAC) under mild conditions. The biocompatibility of this one-pot synthesis was confirmed by evaluation of the

Effects of vitrification on the viability of alginate encapsulated isolated bovine pre-antral follicles.

PURPOSE: Individual follicle cryopreservation techniques, without hydrogel support, are labor-intensive and a substantial proportion of isolated follicles are lost during handling and after warming. Therefore, the viability and morphology of isolated bovine (as a model for human) pre-antral follicles after vitrification and warming, when encapsulated in alginate beads, were investigated. METHODS: Bovine pre-antral follicles were mechanically isolated and divided into four different groups: (1) culture in 2% alginate beads (3D system) and vitrification in beads using mesh cups (3DVIT), (2) cul

Encapsulation of lactase in Ca(II)-alginate beads: Effect of stabilizers and drying methods.

The purpose of the present work was to analyze the effect of trehalose, arabic and guar gums on the preservation of β-galactosidase activity in freeze-dried and vacuum dried Ca(II)-alginate beads. Freezing process was also studied as a first step of freeze-drying. Trehalose was critical for β-galactosidase conservation, and guar gum as a second excipient showed the highest conservation effect (close to 95%). Systems with Tg values ~40°C which were stables at ambient temperature were obtained, being trehalose the main responsible of the formation of an amorphous matrix. Vacuum dried beads showe

Heme Iron Release from Alginate Beads at In Vitro Simulated Gastrointestinal Conditions.

Heme iron (Fe) release from alginate beads at in vitro simulated gastrointestinal conditions for potential use as oral heme Fe supplement was studied. Five beads at different ratios of sodium alginate (SA)-to-spray-dried bovine blood cells (SDBC) with weight ratios of 1:1.25, 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:10, and 1:15 (w/w) were prepared. Release characteristics of these beads were investigated at in vitro simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Release media pH strongly influenced the controlled Fe release from the beads. The heme Fe-beads in simulated gastric fluid (pH 2) remained in a shrinkage state and Fe

Effect of irradiated sodium alginate and phosphorus on biomass and artemisinin production in Artemisia annua.

It is now being realized that irradiation products of natural bioactive agents can also be beneficially utilized to impart value addition in agriculture by converting these bioactive agents into more useful form. Polysaccharides, such as sodium alginate, have proven to be wonderful growth promoting substances in their depolymerized form for various plants. Artemisinin has been increasingly popular as an effective and safe alternative therapy against malaria; also proved effective against the highly adaptable malaria parasite, which has already become resistant to many other drugs. The drug art

Removal of Cr(VI) ions by adsorption onto sodium alginate-polyaniline nanofibers.

In the present study, sodium alginate-polyaniline (SAP) nanofibers are evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) ion from aqueous solution by batch mode. The SAP nanofibers are characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The influences of various parameters such as pH, dosage, co-anions, contact time and concentration on Cr(VI) removal efficiency are investigated. The results of FTIR, SEM and EDX analysis reveals the removal of Cr(VI) ions by SAP nanofibers. Also, the existence of the electrostatic interaction between the Cr(VI) ions and SAP nanofibers is further proved by

Ultrapure alginate anti-adhesion gel does not impair colon anastomotic strength.

BACKGROUND: Ultrapure alginate gel is promising in terms of adhesion prevention. Because anti-adhesive barriers have been shown to disturb healing of bowel anastomoses, the effect of ultrapure alginate gel on the repair of colon anastomoses was studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 102 male Wistar rats, a 0.5-cm segment was resected from the descending colon and continuity was restored by an inverted single-layer end-to-end anastomosis. Animals were randomized into a control, an alginate gel, and a sodium hyaluronate carboxymethyl cellulose film group, each n = 34. Half of each group was sacrifi

Overcoming drug resistance with alginate oligosaccharides able to potentiate the action of selected antibiotics.

The uncontrolled, often inappropriate use of antibiotics has resulted in the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, with major cost implications for both United States and European health care systems. We describe the utilization of a low-molecular-weight oligosaccharide nanomedicine (OligoG), based on the biopolymer alginate, which is able to perturb multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria by modulating biofilm formation and persistence and reducing resistance to antibiotic treatment, as evident using conventional and robotic MIC screening and microscopic analyses of biofilm stru

Injectable in situ crosslinkable RGD-modified alginate matrix for endothelial cells delivery.

Cell-based therapies offer an attractive approach for revascularization and regeneration of tissues. However, and despite the pressing clinical needs for effective revascularization strategies, the successful immobilization of viable vascular cells within 3D matrices has been difficult to achieve. In this paper the in vitro potential of a natural, injectable RGD-alginate hydrogel as an in situ forming matrix to deliver endothelial cells was evaluated. Several techniques were employed to investigate how these microenvironments could influence the behavior of vascular cells, namely their ability

Dose-dependent suppression of hunger by a specific alginate in a low-viscosity drink formulation.

Addition of specific types of alginates to drinks can enhance postmeal suppression of hunger, by forming strong gastric gels in the presence of calcium. However, some recent studies have not demonstrated an effect of alginate/calcium on appetite, perhaps because the selected alginates do not produce sufficiently strong gels or because the alginates were not sufficiently hydrated when consumed. Therefore, the objective of the study was to test effects on appetite of a strongly gelling and fully hydrated alginate in an acceptable, low-viscosity drink formulation. In a balanced order crossover de

[The experience of usage of alginate contain medication in complex therapy at children with GERD disease].

GERD Therapy at children is complicated task because of Physiological features of a children's body, which reflects on the processes of acid production, motility in upper gastro-intestinal tract and on the metabolism of pharmaceutical products. Some of these medications have age usage limitations due to lack of investigation of side effects in treatment of children. Usage of alginate contain medication in complex therapy of such pathological condition brings to not only fast and effective relief of such symptoms as heartburn, eructation and in positive endoscopy dynamics.

Repair of facial nerve with alginate sponge without suturing: an experimental study in cats.

A bioabsorbable material, alginate, was used to repair a defect in the facial nerve. In five cats a 5-mm gap was created in the dorsal ramus of the facial nerve on one side selected at random, which was repaired by implantation of alginate sponge without suturing. In the control group, two cats had a similar nerve injury but without implantation of alginate. Behavioural, electrophysiological, and histological examinations were made over a period of 16 weeks postoperatively. Movement of the upper eyelids and electrophysiological function were restored 12 weeks postoperatively, and many myelinat

Experimental chronic infection induced in mice by Actinomyces israelii entrapped in alginate gel.

Tissue responses to experimentally induced actinomycotic lesions were investigated in mice by both light and transmission electron microscopy. Micro-organisms of Actinomyces israelii were entrapped in alginate gel and injected into the subcutaneous tissue over the periosteum of the mouse cranium. One day after the injection (initial stage), a non-stained amorphous structure was located in the core of the lesion, corresponding to the injected gel with bacteria. Numerous neutrophils surrounded the core region and phagocytized the injected complex actively. At days 3-7 (intermediate stage), the l

Conductive Alginate-Carbon-Black Bioanode for Immediate Microbial Electrolysis Cell Operation.

This study investigated alginate-immobilized planktonic electroactive bacteria directly coated onto a carbon-felt anode as an alternative bioanode configuration without prolonged biofilm development. Carbon-black (CB) nanoparticles were incorporated into the alginate matrix to enhance conductivity and facilitate extracellular electron transfer (EET). The electrochemical performance of alginate-immobilized Shewanella oneidensis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was systematically evaluated by examining the effects of bacterial density and CB-nanoparticle loading. For both bacterial systems, the optima
