Removal of Cr (Ⅲ) from aqueous solution by using bauxite residue (red mud): Identification of active components and column tests.

Bauxite residue is the by-product of the aluminium industry with an annual output of more than 200 million metric tons in China. Its treatment is still a big problem because more than 96% of that is stockpiled on land causing environmental pollution and threatening the human health. This study used bauxite residue to remove Cr (Ⅲ) from aqueous solution and analyzed the removal mechanism. The removal time was dependent on the initial concentrations of Cr (Ⅲ) and different active components acted on different reaction period. Reaction time increased from <5 min to >2 h with an increase of Cr (Ⅲ)

The effect of poultry manure application rate and AlCl(3) treatment on bacterial fecal indicators in runoff.

Increasing costs associated with inorganic fertilizer have led to widespread use of broiler litter. Proper land application, typically limiting nutrient loss, is essential to protect surface water. This study was designed to evaluate litter-borne microbial runoff (heterotrophic plate count bacteria, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, enterococci, and Clostridium perfringens) while applying typical nutrient-control methods. Field studies were conducted in which plots with high and low litter rates, inorganic fertilizer, AlCl(3)-treated litter, and controls were rained on five times using a rain g

Whitish papules on the palm.

A 21-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of whitish bubbling of the palms after brief exposure to water. The symptoms arose within 3-5 min after immersion in water, as a white sponge-like appearance, and resolved after a variable drying period. She was otherwise healthy and did not complain of hyperhidrosis. There was no family history of similar lesions. Physical examination revealed a healthy appearance of the palms; however, 5 min after immersion of the hands in warm water, the central part of the left palm became swollen and tiny white papules with dilated puncta appeared. The

Aluminum tolerance and secondary metabolites modulation in Ilex paraguariensis: implications for mate composition.

Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is a South American native plant whose leaves are used to produce mate, a traditional hot water infusion. The species is rich in secondary metabolites of economic interest and grows naturally in acidic, low-fertility soils where aluminum (Al) is highly bioavailable. However, the influence of Al on secondary metabolism and infusion composition is poorly understood. We cultivated I. paraguariensis in a hydroponic system with increasing Al concentrations. Plant morphology and photosynthesis parameters were not affected, while reactive oxygen species le

The role of plants in ironstone evolution: iron and aluminium cycling in the rhizosphere.

The Carajás plateaus in Brazil host endemic epilithic vegetation ("campo rupestre") on top of ironstone duricrusts, known as canga. This capping rock is primarily composed of iron(III) oxide minerals and forms a physically resistant horizon. Field observations reveal an intimate interaction between canga's surface and two native sedges (Rhynchospora barbata and Bulbostylis cangae). These observations suggest that certain plants contribute to the biogeochemical cycling of iron. Iron dissolution features at the root-rock interface were characterised using synchrotron-based techniques, Raman spec

Cysteine-Facilitated Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II/III)-bearing phyllosilicates: Enhancement from In-Situ Fe(II) generation.

Structural Fe in phyllosilicates represents a crucial and potentially renewable reservoir of electron equivalents for contaminants reduction in aquatic and soil systems. However, it remains unclear how in-situ modification of Fe redox states within Fe-bearing phyllosilicates, induced by electron shuttles such as naturally occurring organics, influences the fate of contaminants. Herein, this study investigated the processes and mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction on two typical Fe(II/III)-bearing phyllosilicates, biotite and chlorite, in the presence of cysteine (Cys) at circumneutral pH. The experim

Skin decontamination of Carfentanil in vitro.

Skin decontamination of Chemical Biological Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) materials involves the timely and effective removal of the contaminants from the skin surface. The current work evaluated Fuller's Earth & The Reactive Skin Decontaminant Lotion Kit (RSDL®) to investigate whether they were as efficacious against free base Carfentanil skin contamination as they are against chemical warfare agents. The in vitro methodology used allowed for evaluation of decontamination regimens as specified by the decontaminant manufacturer rather than as an application of a bolus dose left in situ for th

Appraisal and ranking of poly-aluminium chloride, ferric chloride and alum for the treatment of dairy soiled water.

Land spreading of dairy soiled water (DSW) may result in pollution of ground and surface waters. Treatment of DSW through sludge-supernatant separation using chemical coagulants is a potential option to reduce the negative environmental impacts of DSW. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the effectiveness of three chemical coagulants - poly-aluminium chloride (PACl), ferric chloride (FeCl3) and alum - in improving effluent quality, and (2) assess the properties of the sludge that is generated as by-product from the process for its suitability for land application. Taking into considerati

Solid phosphorus phase in aluminum- and iron-treated biosolids.

Stabilization of phosphorus (P) in sewage sludge (biosolids) to reduce water-soluble P concentrations is essential for minimizing P loss from amended soils and maximizing the capacity of the soil to safely serve as an outlet for this waste material. The chemical form at which P is retained in biosolids stabilized by Al(2)(SO(4))(3) x 18H(2)O (alum) or FeSO(4) x 7H(2)O (FeSul) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray elemental spectrometry (EDXS) and by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both treatments resulted in the formation of a Ca-P phase, probabl

Preparation of the Lanthanum-Aluminum-Amended Attapulgite Composite as a Novel Inactivation Material to Immobilize Phosphorus in Lake Sediment.

In this study, a green solvent-free drying production method was used to prepare an attapulgite clay/lanthanum and aluminum (ACLA) composite as a novel phosphorus (P) sorbent to immobilize P in lake sediment. The prepared sorbent contained around 5% La and 2% Al. The maximum P sorption capacity of ACLA can reach as high as 34.6 mg P/g and is higher than most clay-based P sorbents. The addition of ACLA into sediment can effectively reduce sediment mobile P and simultaneously induce elevated inert P forms of HCl-P and NaOH-rP, which also can increase the stability of P in sediment. Long-term sed

Application of the Rietveld method to assess chromium(VI) speciation in chromite ore processing residue.

The Rietveld method allows the quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous material identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and other diffraction methods. The method assists in determining the speciation of contaminants in solid matrices both qualitatively and quantitatively in a statistically defensible approach, as it does not focus on a microscale. Rietveld was applied to chromite ore processing residue (COPR), a cementitious waste containing hexavalent chromium. Calcium aluminum chromium oxide hydrates (CACs) were the crystalline phases identified by XRPD that bind Cr(6+) in C

Tire wear particle and leachate exposures from a pristine and road-worn tire to Hyalella azteca: Comparison of chemical content and biological effects.

Tire emissions have emerged as an environmental contaminant of concern. To fully understand their effects to biota, research is needed from different stages of a tire's lifecycle. In this study we exposed freshwater Hyalella azteca to tire wear particles (TWPs) as particle suspensions or their respective chemical leachates (the chemicals released from tire particles into water) from a pristine (P-TWP) and worn (W-TWP) tire of same make and model. Acute and long-term toxicity experiments on H. azteca showed that P-TWP suspensions were more toxic than W-TWP suspensions with estimated LC50 values

The effects of discontinuation of aluminum exposure on aluminum-induced osteomalacia.

Studies in patients on dialysis have shown that aluminum (Al) accumulation in bone plays a major role in the pathogenesis of osteomalacia. It has been suggested that deferoxamine (DFO) may be beneficial in the treatment of aluminum-induced osteomalacia. The present studies were performed in four groups of uremic rats to determine if DFO and/or discontinuation of Al administration have an effect on bone histomorphometry and blood chemistries. The groups were: 1) uremic control 2) aluminum (0.75 to 1.0 mg/rat i.p., five times a week for twelve weeks): 3) aluminum + DFO, after twelve weeks Al was

Development and optimization of a new synthetic process for lorcaserin.

A two-step process to synthesize racemic lorcaserin was developed from 2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanol via formation of bromide or tosylate derivatives. These derivatives were reacted with allylamine in neat conditions to provide pure N-(4-chlorophenethyl)allylammonium chloride. This compound was cyclized in neat conditions using aluminum or zinc chloride to give racemic lorcaserin. After resolution of enantiomers, the wrong enantiomer was racemized and recycled to give new R-lorcaserin.
