Pain-related analysis on a resorbed ridge with various denture occlusal schemes using finite element method.

Resorbed alveolar ridges, particularly in the lower jaw, have a small denture supporting area, which may cause the stress distribution of mastication load to exceed the pressure-pain threshold (PPT) and induce pain in the mucosa or potentially worsen the ridge resorption. Thus, choosing the ideal occlusal scheme among bilateral balanced (BBO), lingualized (LO), and monoplane (MO) for such conditions becomes crucial. The experiment was conducted using the finite element method on a modeling of a resorbed alveolar ridge in the lower jaw with three dentures placed on top, each of which was given

The Customized Alveolar Ridge-Splitting (CARS) Technique Combined with Guided Bone Regeneration or Sinus Elevation Augmentation in Maxillary Deficient Ridges.

Various techniques have been proposed to regenerate deficient ridges after tooth removal, including guided bone regeneration, block grafting, distraction osteogenesis, and ridge splitting. However, these procedures are technique-sensitive and often present complications which prevent reconstruction of the deficient ridge and implant placement. In an atrophic anterior or posterior maxilla, these techniques often fail to produce satisfactory long-term outcomes due to the poor bone quality, pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, and the highly cosmetic patient demands. The customized alveolar rid

Clinical applications of concentrated growth factors membrane for sealing the socket in alveolar ridge preservation: a randomized controlled trial.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of concentrated growth factor (CGF) membrane for the sealing of alveolar socket in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). A total of 22 patients with 24 alveolar sockets were recruited and divided randomly into CGF group and Bio-Gide collagen membrane group. The soft tissue wound healing rate was calculated using intraoral scanner at 3, 7, and 14 days after ARP, and the bone resorption volume at 1, 3, and 5 mm below the alveolar ridge was measured by CBCT at 6 months postoperation. The keratinized gingival width was also measured before and 6

An unusual foreign object mimicking an odontoma in a patient with cleft alveolus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The habit of inserting foreign objects into body cavities is seen in children and in adults with intellectual disability. Usually, the foreign objects cause chronic inflammation and local tissue destruction, which give rise to symptoms. Diagnosis at an asymptomatic stage is uncommon when the history is not suggestive. We describe a rare case where a foreign object was misdiagnosed as an odontoma in a patient with an alveolar cleft. CASE PRESENTATION: A radiopaque round mass was noted on the radiograph of a 12-year-old Sinhalese boy who was awaiting an alveolar bone graft. Apart fr

Prospective Clinical and Radiographic Study of Alveolar Ridge Preservation Combining Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft With Two Xenogeneic Collagen Matrices.

BACKGROUND: Tooth extractions are followed by significant dimensional changes in the alveolar crest that may preclude implant placement. This randomized, controlled, prospective compares the preservation of soft and hard tissue dimensional changes after alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) using two membranes consisting of collagen matrix (CM) or extracellular matrix (ECM) as barriers over freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA). METHODS: Standardized clinical and radiographic measurements of soft and hard tissues were recorded by means of a stent before and 4 months after ARP. The surgery entailed s

Effect of the socket shield technique on alveolar ridge dimensional changes in sites with thin buccal bone phenotype: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-extraction alveolar ridge remodeling is a major challenge for implant therapy, particularly in sites with a thin buccal bone phenotype. Although immediate implant placement has been proposed to limit ridge resorption, buccal dimensional changes remain frequent. The socket shield technique has been proposed to preserve the periodontal ligament-bundle bone complex and reduce post-extraction bone loss. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare alveolar ridge dimensional changes following the socket shield technique versus immediate implant placement in sites with buccal bon

Challenges and Innovations in Alveolar Bone Regeneration: A Narrative Review on Materials, Techniques, Clinical Outcomes, and Future Directions.

This review explores the recent advancements and ongoing challenges in regenerating alveolar bone, which is essential for dental implants and periodontal health. It examines traditional techniques like guided bone regeneration and bone grafting, alongside newer methods such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and 3D bioprinting. Each approach is considered for its strengths in supporting bone growth and integration, especially in cases where complex bone defects make regeneration difficult. This review also looks at different biomaterials, from bioactive scaffolds to nanomaterials, assessing h

Autotransplantation of immature second premolar combined with alveolar ridge splitting: A long-term (6-year) follow-up case report.

This case report describes a successful autotransplantation procedure for an impacted mandibular left second premolar with incomplete root formation. Despite caries and root resorption, the patient's mandibular left second primary molar was retained. Furthermore, the severe impaction of the mandibular left second premolar ruled out orthodontic realignment. Due to the young age of the patient, dental implantation was not feasible, leading to the selection of autotransplantation as the preferred method for replacing the retained primary molar. To address the insufficient buccolingual width of th

Prevalence of peri-implantitis after alveolar ridge preservation at periodontitis and nonperiodontitis extraction sites: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is the main indication for dental extraction and often leads to peri-implantitis (PI). Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is an effective means of preserving ridge dimensions after extraction. However, whether PI prevalence is lower after ARP for extraction after periodontitis remains unclear. This study investigated PI after ARP in patients with periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study explored the 138 dental implants of 113 patients. The reasons for extraction were categorized as periodontitis or nonperiodontitis. All implants were placed at sites treated

In situ shell technique for edentulous ridge augmentation.

BACKGROUND: The novel two-stage technique presented in this study is based on guided bone regeneration for three-dimensional bone augmentation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The proposed technique was performed to augment an atrophic alveolar ridge in the maxilla and mandible. This method is based on using an autogenous bone plate, a mixture of allogeneic bone graft and injectable -platelet-rich fibrin, and a bioresorbable barrier membrane. Based on the cases presented in this study, sufficient osseous regeneration was achieved to place dental implants in an ideal position. CONCLUSION: Within the lim

Effect of osseodensification on the increase in ridge thickness and the prevention of buccal peri-implant defects: an in vitro randomized split mouth pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Implant installation with conventional drilling can create buccal bone defects in areas of limited ridge thickness. Implant installation with osseodensification may aid in preventing buccal bone defects in these situations. This in vitro pilot study evaluated the impact of osseodensification on the increase in alveolar ridge thickness and the prevention of buccal peri-implant defects. METHODS: Ten fresh pig mandibles with limited bone thickness were selected for use in an experimental randomized split mouth pilot study. Two site-preparation protocols were used: conventional drilli
