Positioning and fixation of pacemaker leads in the right atrium depends on advanced anatomic knowledge in order to correctly interpret information from fluoroscopy and electrograms. Particularly the inability to reach a certain position or to achieve lead stability requires familiarity with right atrial structures such as the Eustachian ridge or areas of trabeculated versus smooth myocardium. Only a good understanding of right atrial anatomy makes it possible to replace electrophysiologically suboptimal atrial pacing sites such as right atrial appendage or high lateral wall by electrophysiolog

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article focuses on clinically relevant teaching points in spinal anatomy and localizing the lesion in myelopathy.
RECENT FINDINGS: The principles underlying spinal cord lesion localization are well established, but improvements in MRI and the discovery of pathologic antibodies associated with causes of transverse myelitis distinct from multiple sclerosis, such as aquaporin-4 IgG and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein IgG, have assisted in diagnosis.
SUMMARY: The spinal cord has a highly organized neuroanatomy of ascending and descending tracts that convey sensory, mo

Metatarsalgia is a common presentation, particularly in middle-aged women. This review discusses the anatomical basis and classifies the different pathologies into primary, secondary and iatrogenic. The key elements to differentiate the pathologies within each classification which could cause a patient to suffer with metatarsalgia are outlined. Further investigations are briefly covered, but a linked article discusses the investigations of metatarsalgia in more detail. The article gives an overview of metatarsalgia to help clinicians to investigate and manage these symptoms.

Coronary venous anatomy can be divided into the greater cardiac venous system and the lesser cardiac venous system. With protocol optimization, including appropriate contrast bolus timing, coronary veins can be depicted with excellent detail on CT. Knowledge of variant coronary venous anatomy can sometimes play a role in pre-procedural planning. Analysis of the coronary venous anatomy on CT can detect coronary venous anomalies that cause right to left shunts with risk of stroke, left to right shunts, and arrhythmias.

Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology are inextricably linked in patients with intracranial atherosclerosis. Knowledge of abnormal or pathological conditions such as intracranial atherosclerosis stems from detailed recognition of the normal pattern of vascular anatomy. The vascular anatomy of the intracranial arteries, both at the level of the vessel wall and as a larger structure or conduit, is a reflection of physiology over time, from in utero stages through adult life. The unique characteristics of arteries at the base of the brain may help our understanding of atherosclerotic lesions t

Myomas are the most common disorder of the female genital organs, occurring more frequently throughout women's reproductive years. Myomas are a major health issue all over the world. They develop as a monoclonal tumor from cells influenced by ovarian steroids, and mediated by surrounding myometrial cells by paracrine mechanisms. During its growth, a myoma compresses the surrounding tissue, causing the formation of a pseudocapsule, encapsulating the myoma. The mechanical properties of myomas are a key factor which can contribute to their growth. While myomas are essentially rigid, their pseudoc

The NIH FACEBASE consortium was established in part to create a central resource for craniofacial researchers. One purpose is to provide a molecular anatomy of craniofacial development. To this end we have used a combination of laser capture microdissection and RNA-Seq to define the gene expression programs driving development of the murine palate. We focused on the E14.5 palate, soon after medial fusion of the two palatal shelves. The palate was divided into multiple compartments, including both medial and lateral, as well as oral and nasal, for both the anterior and posterior domains. A tota

Knowledge of the anatomy of the nipple and breast skin is fundamental to any surgeon practicing conservative mastectomies. In this paper, the relevant clinical anatomy will be described, mainly focusing on the anatomy of the "oncoplastic plane", the ducts and the vasculature. We will also cover more briefly the nerve supply and the arrangement of smooth muscle of the nipple. Finally the lymphatic drainage of the nipple and areola will be described. An appreciation of the relevant anatomy, together with meticulous surgical technique may minimise local recurrence and ischaemic complications.

The olfactory system is an essential part of human physiology, with a rich evolutionary history. Although humans are less dependent on chemosensory input than are other mammals (Niimura 2009, Hum. Genomics 4:107-118), olfactory function still plays a critical role in health and behavior. The detection of hazards in the environment, generating feelings of pleasure, promoting adequate nutrition, influencing sexuality, and maintenance of mood are described roles of the olfactory system, while other novel functions are being elucidated. A growing body of evidence has implicated a role for olfactio

The focus of this article is the anatomy and histology of the anal canal, and its clinical relevance to anal cancers. The article also highlights the recent histological and anatomical changes to the traditional terminology of the anal canal. The terminology has been adopted by the American Joint Committee on Cancer, separating the anal region into the anal canal, the perianal region and the skin. This paper describes the gross anatomy of the anal canal, along with its associated blood supply, venous and lymphatic drainage, and nerve supply. The new terminology referred to in this article may

Hearts that have previously been called univentricular hearts, or single ventricles, can be described as having a univentricular atrioventricular connection. Most such hearts have two ventricular chambers, albeit one is small and incomplete-lacking an inlet component. The atriums of these hearts connect only to one of these ventricular chambers, which is usually the larger and dominant ventricle. Other hearts, with biventricular atrioventricular connections, may have hypoplasia of one ventricle, making it impossible to restore a biventricular circulation and such hearts are functionally univen

Imaging of patients with suspected or known pericardial disease remains challenging. Echocardiography is the first-line investigation for pericardial disease but it has specific limitations in terms of its abilities to visualise the pericardium fully and to identify extracardiac pathology. Cardiac cross-sectional imaging by both MRI and CT has developed significantly and now has an important role in the investigation of pericardial disease. This article examines the appearances of both healthy and diseased pericardium using CT and MRI. The typical imaging findings across a wide range of condit

Knowledge of the anatomy of the cranial nerves is mandatory for optimal radiological exploration and interpretation of the images in normal and pathological conditions. CT is the method of choice for the study of the skull base and its foramina. MRI explores the cranial nerves and their vascular relationships precisely. Because of their small size, it is essential to obtain images with high spatial resolution. The MRI sequences optimize contrast between nerves and surrounding structures (cerebrospinal fluid, fat, bone structures and vessels). This chapter discusses the radiological anatomy of

The pelvic floor is a dome-shaped striated muscular sheet that encloses the bladder, uterus, and rectum, and, together with the anal sphincters, has an important role in regulating storage and evacuation of urine and stool. This article reviews the anatomy, nerve supply, pharmacology, and functions of the anal sphincters and the pelvic floor. The internal and external anal sphincters are primarily responsible for maintaining faecal continence at rest and when continence is threatened, respectively. Defecation is a somato-visceral reflex regulated by dual nerve supply (i.e. somatic and autonomi

Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies defined by abortive development of the urethral spongiosum, the ventral prepuce and in more severe cases penile chordee. The etiology of hypospadias remains unknown with environmental exposure in the form of endocrine disruptors the most likely explanation for the worldwide increase in incidence in the last three decades. There are five sequential steps for the successful repair of hypospadias: 1) Orthoplasty or penile straightening, 2) Urethroplasty, 3) Meatoplasty and Glanuloplasty, 4) Scrotoplasty, and 5) Skin Coverage. The major te
