Angiofibroma is a benign vascular tumor that usually occurs in the nasopharynx, and extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas are rarely reported. We report the first case of an angiofibroma arising from the inferior turbinate after CO2 laser turbinoplasty. Endoscopic excisional biopsy was performed, but the tumor recurred after 2 months of surgery. The mass was excised by endoscopic approach including surrounding normal mucosal tissue. Histologic examination suggested the diagnosis of angiofibroma. The patient was asymptomatic, and there was no evidence of recurrence after 1 year of the second surger

We present a five-year-old boy with facial angiofibromas associated to tuberous sclerosis successfully treated with topical sirolimus 0.4% applied three times a week for six months. After six months we observed a nearly complete resolution of facial angiofibromas. The blood levels of sirolimus remained under a detectable limit and no side-effects were observed. Topically applied sirolimus seems to be a safe and effective alternative to surgery or laser therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the minimally invasive treatment and prognosis of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma involving the eye and optic nerve.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of clinical data for 18 large juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas, with reports of three typical cases.
RESULTS: The tumour invaded the orbit, eye, optic nerve and optic chiasm in 18, 9, 8 and 5 patients, respectively. Twelve patients were cured after surgery, with the affected eye and vision essentially returning to normal. In six patients, tumour residue was found in the middle cranial fossa; two of these six did n

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder presenting clinically with multiple hamartomas in different organs including the skin. The cutaneous manifestations include facial angiofibromas, hypopigmented macules (ash leaves), connective tissue nevi (shagreen patches), and periungual fibromas (Koenen tumors). We present a case of facial angiofibromas in a mosaic pattern tuberous sclerosis in an 11-year-old boy.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare vascular tumor of the nasopharynx occurring in young males. The aim of this study was attempt to find out the site of origin and the common expansion routes of JNA.
METHODS: The CT examinations of 46 untreated patients with histologically proven JNA were retrospectively analyzed. Evidence of tumor spreading of the locations are those following CT characteristics: (a) expansion and/or erosion of bony wall; (b) obliteration of normal fatty planes. In addition, three dimensional reconstruction technology was used to make further stu

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare autosomal dominant disorder. Myofibroblasts are cells with a hybrid phenotype between fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. The objective of this study is to describe clinical and histopathological characteristics of tuberous sclerosis and to conduct an immunohistochemical evaluation of myofibroblasts in cutaneous angiofibromas present in this condition. Lesion sections removed were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. Immunohistochemistry against alpha-SMA was done to determine the presence of myofibroblasts, and the reaction was negative. Since a

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign but locally invasive tumour. Patients are usually in their adolescent age and present with epistaxis and nasal blockage. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and the C.T. scan findings. Pre-operative superselective embolisation (SSE) and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The out patient clinic of ORL-HNS hospital of University Science Malaysia received 25 referrals, all male, majority between 9-13 years of age and few adolescents. Clinically the patients were consistent with symptoms of recurrent epistaxis and nasal blocka

BACKGROUND: Angiofibromas are uncommon vascular tumors with a strong predilection for the nasopharynx of adolescent males. Although they are slow growing and histologically benign, they have the potential to cause significant morbidity with laryngeal involvement.
METHODS: We describe the clinical characteristics, histopathologic findings, differential diagnosis, preoperative evaluation, and management of a case of laryngeal angiofibroma.
RESULTS: The patient was initially seen with a 2 1/2-year history of progressive dyspnea and dysphagia. Preoperative evaluation suggested a vascular mass in

The authors describe a patient with a history of mental retardation and seizures who presented with unusually large edematous, pedunculated eyelid lesions of unknown etiology. The histopathology revealed features consistent with giant cell angiofibroma, a variant of the angiofibromas commonly seen in tuberous sclerosis.

Large juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are a therapeutic challenge because of their relation to major vasculature and cranial nerves at the base of the skull, and their propensity for recurrence. A classification scheme based on the growth pattern of this tumor is proposed to help the surgeon choose a procedure to access this lesion. This report describes the results obtained with the surgical removal of large (class III and IV) nasopharyngeal angiofibromas through the infratemporal fossa approach. Fourteen patients were cured and one individual developed a recurrence which was totally re

BACKGROUND: Juvenile angiofibroma (JA) is a rare fibrovascular tumor affecting young males. Although histologically benign, JA is clinically aggressive, with high morbidity, mortality, and recurrence rates. While β-catenin expression is known to contribute to JA growth, its role in recurrence remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between β-catenin expression and recurrence risk in JA patients.
METHOD: An analytical observational case-control study was conducted at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, analyzing 33 JA patients who underwent tumor excision (2013-202

A 32-year-old male presented with recurrent bilateral epistaxis and nasal obstruction, leading to a rare diagnosis of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Although primarily observed in adolescents, this case underscores its presence in older populations. The patient underwent a successful endoscopic resection, contributing to the scant documented instances of such cases in adult U.S. males.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is the most common benign tumor of the nasopharynx. For reasons unknown, this tumor is found almost always in male population. However, site of origin of JNA is still an enigma. Previously, JNA was considered to arise from the superior aspect of sphenopalatine foramen. Over last decade, the vidian canal was considered to be the more specific and likely site of origin. However, based on our observations, we believe this hypothesis to be anomalous as it does not explain major blood supply, pattern of skull base erosion in early stage of tumor and newer

Retroperitoneal cellular angiofibroma (RCA) is very rare, and the optimal treatment for RCA has not been established. We report the case of RCA in a 58-year-old man who underwent curative laparoscopy-assisted resection. Preoperative computed tomography showed heterogeneous enhancement of the 7 cm diameter tumor in the pelvis. A smaller (2.3 cm) mass was also detected in the small intestine. The preoperative diagnosis was peritoneal metastasis of the gastrointestinal tumor of the small intestine. The pelvic tumor was laparoscopically mobilized from the rectum, the left ureter, and the left inte

INTRODUCTION: The nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NA) is a benign tumor that originates from the pterygopalatine fossa and extends to the adjacent anatomical structures and affects frequently young individuals. The basic treatment for NA is surgical resection, but in some cases the tumor is surgically inaccessible.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 45-year-old male with respiratory difficulty after the appearance of a soft palate lesion. The clinical appearance of NA was not specific.
DISCUSSION: There are still discussions about the best therapeutic strategy and controversies about
