Development of One Health-based community surveillance system to study zoonotic diseases: a study protocol.

Animals are responsible for a substantial burden of infectious diseases and pose a serious threat to human health, particularly in peri-urban areas where human-animal-environment interfaces are intensified due to rapid urban expansion. This protocol aims to develop a One Health-based community surveillance system to assess the prevalence, transmission dynamics and risk factors associated with brucellosis, leptospirosis and scrub typhus in a peri-urban setting in Odisha, India. We will conduct a prospective mixed-methods cohort study over 3 years in two peri-urban blocks of Khordha district. Ab

One health considerations in veterinary palliative medicine.

Veterinary palliative medicine (VPM) is an emerging discipline within clinical veterinary science that addresses the comfort and quality of life of animals affected by chronic or terminal illness. The implications of VPM extend beyond the individual patient. From a One Health perspective, end-of-life veterinary practice encompasses animal welfare, caregiver well-being, and environmental sustainability. This paper aims to present a multidisciplinary synthesis that connects these dimensions. It highlights the health benefits and the emotional costs of the human-animal bond; the psychological ris

Is a One Health Approach Utilized for Q Fever Control? A Comprehensive Literature Review.

Q fever, a zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to humans, is a significant public health problem with a potential for outbreaks to occur. Q fever prevention strategies should incorporate human, animal, and environmental domains. A One Health approach, which engages cross-sectoral collaboration among multiple stakeholders, may be an appropriate framework and has the underlying principles to control Q fever holistically. To assess whether components of One Health for Q fever prevention and control have been applied, a comprehensive literature review was undertaken. We found 16 studies that

Application of Metabolomic Tools for Studying Low Molecular-Weight Fraction of Animal Venoms and Poisons.

Both venoms and poisonous secretions are complex mixtures that assist in defense, predation, communication, and competition in the animal world. They consist of variable bioactive molecules, such as proteins, peptides, salts and also metabolites. Metabolomics opens up new perspectives for the study of venoms and poisons as it gives an opportunity to investigate their previously unexplored low molecular-weight components. The aim of this article is to summarize the available literature where metabolomic technologies were used for examining the composition of animal venoms and poisons. The paper

Replacing the NIH test for rabies vaccine potency testing: a synopsis of drivers and barriers.

Approximately 70% of animal use is utilized to demonstrate quality control of vaccines. Especially rabies vaccine potency testing, using the NIH challenge test, involves objections in terms of scientific relevance, animal welfare concern and costs. Several 3R models have been proposed to refine, reduce or replace this test. Some are formally incorporated into regulatory requirements, but actual regulatory acceptance and use by industry lags behind, raising the question concerning which factors influence this process. This question is answered by a combination of literature review, interviews a

Habituation of exploratory behaviour in VPA rats: animal model of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with multifactorial aetiology, represented as impairment in social behaviour, communication and the occurrence of repetitive activities, which can be observed in the early life. The core features are frequently accompanied by other manifestations, including limited environmental exploration. The aim of the presented study, realised on an animal model of autism - VPA rats, i.e. animals prenatally affected with valproic acid on gestation day 12.5, was to investigate the habituation process of exploratory activity (manifested by a gradual decrease in the in

Childhood animal cruelty, bestiality, and the link to adult interpersonal violence.

Animal cruelty has been a concern of the legal and psychiatric communities for many years. Beginning in the early 1800s, state legislatures in the United States established laws to protect the basic safety and security of animals in their jurisdictions. Legislatures have differed in opinion on the animals to receive protection under the law and have instituted differing penalties for infractions of anti-cruelty measures. In the 1960s, the psychiatric community took notice of childhood animal cruelty as a potential risk factor for violent acts against humans. Since that time there has been incr

An open-source research tool to study triaxial inertial sensors for monitoring selected behaviors in sheep.

The use of automated systems for monitoring animal behavior provides information on individual animal behavior and can be used to enhance animal productivity. However, the advancement of this industry is hampered by technology costs, challenges with power supplies, limited data accessibility, and inconsistent testing approaches for confirming the detection of livestock behaviors. Development of open-source research tools similar to commercially available wearable technologies may contribute to the development of more-efficient and affordable technologies. The objective of this study was to dem

Gut microbiome-brain-cirrhosis axis.

Cirrhosis is characterized by inflammation, degeneration, and fibrosis of liver tissue. Along with being the most common cause of liver failure and liver transplant, cirrhosis is a significant risk factor for several neuropsychiatric conditions. The most common of these is HE, which is characterized by cognitive and ataxic symptoms, resulting from the buildup of metabolic toxins with liver failure. However, cirrhosis patients also show a significantly increased risk for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, and for mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. I

Assessing Behavioral Risk Factors Driving Zoonotic Spillover Among High-risk Populations in Myanmar.

The increasing global emergence of zoonoses warrants improved awareness of activities that predispose vulnerable communities to greater risk of disease. Zoonotic disease outbreaks regularly occur within Myanmar and at its borders partly due to insufficient knowledge of behavioral risks, hindering participatory surveillance and reporting. This study employed a behavioral surveillance strategy among high-risk populations to understand the behavioral risks for zoonotic disease transmission in an effort to identify risk factors for pathogen spillover. To explore behavioral mechanisms of spillover

Animal models of autism spectrum disorder: Bridging biology to behaviour.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen over the decades, reflecting improved awareness and evolving diagnostic practice. ASD is characterized by clinical and biological heterogeneity, with diverse genetic and environmental risk factors converging on disruption of synaptic function, circuits, and behaviour. This complexity limits mechanistic inference from human studies and underscores the importance of animal models for establishing causal relationships between risk mechanisms and ASD-relevant phenotypes. In this review, we outline the framework used to evaluate the relevan

Colonic Myenteric Plexus Neurodegeneration and Minor Colon Inflammation in Trimethyltin-induced Rat Model of Neurodegeneration.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are common health problems found during aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Trimethyltin-induced rat is known as an animal model of hippocampal degeneration with no data on enteric neurodegeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effect of trimethyltin (TMT) induction on the gastrointestinal tract. A 28-day animal study with male Sprague-Dawley rats (3 months old, 150-200 g) given a single TMT injection (8 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal) was conducted. The number of neurons in the colonic myenteric plexus was measured using stereological estimation. Histol

Measuring the nausea-to-emesis continuum in non-human animals: refocusing on gastrointestinal vagal signaling.

Nausea and vomiting are ubiquitous as drug side effects and symptoms of disease; however, the systems that determine these responses are arguably designed for protection against food poisoning occurring at the level of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This basic biological pathway using GI vagal afferent communication to the brain is not well understood. Part of this lack of insight appears to be related to current experimental approaches, such as the use of experimental drugs, including systemic chemotherapy and brain penetrant agents, which activate parts of the nausea and vomiting system in

Experience implementing a sporotrichosis surveillance and control program in free-roaming cats on a university campus.

Sporotrichosis is an emerging zoonosis with growing impact in Brazil's urban areas, aggravated by the absence of effective public health policies and standardized surveillance protocols, especially for free-roaming cats. This study evaluated the implementation of a surveillance and control protocol for sporotrichosis in an urban area with high densities of community cats and frequent abandonment, including animals testing positive for the disease. A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was conducted at the Pampulha Campus, UFMG, Belo Horizonte, from January 2020 to February 2025. Th

Analysis of rat vocalizations as a tool for assessing the effects of α7nAChR PAMs in a neurodevelopmental model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is commonly associated with impairments in communication, and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rodents serve as a translational tool to probe such deficits. We examined the effects of positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR), compounds CCMI and PNU120596, on vocal communication in a rat model of ASD induced by prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure. Leveraging a multimodal analytic framework, we investigated not only conventional acoustic variables but also temporal structure, syntactic organization, and cluster-

High prevalence of Helicobacter heilmannii-associated gastritis in a small, predominantly rural area: further evidence in support of a zoonosis?

BACKGROUND: Primary hosts of Helicobacter heilmannii are domestic animals--cats, dogs and pigs, but rarely is it detected in gastric biopsies from humans. We found H. heilmannii in gastric biopsies obtained from patients living in a predominantly rural area. METHODS: We evaluated geographic and demographic data from the area and calculated both the total prevalence and the prevalence in each community in this area. Chi-squared test and exploratory data analysis were used for statistical evaluation. Histologic and clinical data were recorded. RESULTS: Forty-three communities, mostly rural, we
