Design and validation of a minibeam treatment delivery system for use with a radiation therapy research platform.

Minibeam radiation therapy (MBRT) is a promising treatment technique in the early stages of clinical use. In this work, two hexagonal minibeam collimators were designed, fabricated, and validated using film measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. Film and Monte Carlo results demonstrated strong agreement, with the greatest agreement near the beam central axis. One of the previously validated MBRT collimators was then modified to allow for dose calculations on a mouse cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) dataset, and a MBRT dose distribution was preserved in the animal dataset. This validated

Distribution of Corynebacterium renale among apparently healthy rats.

We examined the distribution of Corynebacterium renale, a causative agent of urinary calculus, in clinically normal rats at 6 animal facilities in Japan. Swabs of the vulva and vaginal vestibule or prepuce of the rats were cultured for isolation of the organisms. C. renale has been isolated at only one animal facility, where cases of urinary calculus were reported several years ago. In this facility, 32% of female (43/135) and 22% of male (18/82) rats, 4-28 weeks old, were positive for C. renale. In contrast, 92 female and 169 male rats at other facilities without a history of the disease were

Zoonotic giardiasis: an update.

Giardia duodenalis is a common intestinal parasite in various hosts, with the disease giardiasis being a zoonosis. The use of molecular typing tools has improved our understanding of the distribution and zoonotic potential of G. duodenalis genotypes in different animals. The present review summarizes recent data on the distribution of G. duodenalis genotypes in humans and animals in different areas. The dominance of G. duodenalis assemblages A and B in humans and common occurrence of host-adapted assemblages in most domesticated animals suggests that zoonotic giardiasis is probably less common

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infections in goats and other animals diagnosed at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System: 1990-2012.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a recognized zoonotic food-borne pathogen; however, little is known about the ecology and epidemiology of diseases caused by the bacterium in California. The objective of the current study was to contribute to the knowledge of the diseases caused by Y. pseudotuberculosis in goats, the animal species most frequently reported with clinical yersiniosis to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, to better understand the epidemiology of this disease. A 23-year retrospective study was conducted to characterize the syndromes caused by the bacteri

Phylogeography Analysis Reveals Rabies Epidemiology, Evolution, and Transmission in the Philippines.

Rabies, caused by rabies virus, is a severe public health problem in the Philippines, where animal rabies epidemiology had been extensively investigated, but little is known about the national epidemiologic situations since 2010. Here, we report a 12-year nationwide animal rabies surveillance with systematic phylogenetic analysis, in which 353 whole genomes of rabies viruses collected from animal rabies cases between 2018 and 2022 were obtained. The phylogenetic and spatial-temporal evolutionary analyses showed that rabies viruses in the Philippines were exclusively classified into the SEA4 su

Red Fox as Sentinel for Blastomyces dermatitidis, Ontario, Canada.

Blastomyces dermatitidis, a fungus that can cause fatal infection in humans and other mammals, is not readily recoverable from soil, its environmental reservoir. Because of the red fox's widespread distribution, susceptibility to B. dermatitidis, close association with soil, and well-defined home ranges, this animal has potential utility as a sentinel for this fungus.

The continental atlas of tsetse and African animal trypanosomosis in Nigeria.

Tsetse-transmitted trypanosomosis remains a major animal health problem in Nigeria, in a context where changes in land cover, climate and control interventions are modifying its epidemiological patterns. Evidence-based decision making for the progressive control of the disease requires spatially-explicit information on its occurrence and prevalence, as well as on the distribution and abundance of the tsetse vector. In the framework of the continental Atlas of tsetse and African animal trypanosomosis (AAT), a geo-referenced database was assembled for Nigeria, based on the systematic review of 1

Region-specific tauopathy and synucleinopathy in brain of the alpha-synuclein overexpressing mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: α-synuclein [α-Syn]-mediated activation of GSK-3β leading to increases in hyperphosphorylated Tau has been shown by us to occur in striata of Parkinson's diseased [PD] patients and in animal models of PD. In Alzheimer's disease, tauopathy exists in several brain regions; however, the pattern of distribution of tauopathy in other brain regions of PD or in animal models of PD is not known. The current studies were undertaken to analyze the distribution of tauopathy in different brain regions in a widely used mouse model of PD, the α-Syn overexpressing mouse. RESULTS: High levels of

Age-related distribution of elastic fibers in the rabbit knee.

The distribution and histochemical properties of elastic fibers in the knee of newborn, young, adult, and old New Zealand White rabbits were studied. In the growing rabbit, elastic fibers, especially oxytalan fibers, are abundant in the perichondrium and the fibrous layer of the periosteum. They are homogeneously distributed in tendons, ligaments, and menisci, and are absent in the epiphyseal cartilage and growth plate and at the enthesis. In mature rabbits, the articular capsule, the synovial membrane, the peritenon, the periosteum, the perimysium, and the perivascular connective tissue are r

Distribution of peptide-immunoreactive nerves in the foetal and newborn guinea-pig caecum.

The distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-, substance P-, [met]enkephalin- and somatostatin-like immunoreactive nerves was studied in the caecum from foetal guinea-pigs of 6-9 weeks gestation (i.e., approximately 1-4 weeks before birth) and 4-5-day-old guinea-pigs. Peptide-immunoreactive nerves were first detected in the myenteric and submucous plexuses and circular muscle layer at 6 weeks of gestation and in the mucosa at 7 weeks of gestation. The density of fibres in these layers increased during prenatal development until, by 9 weeks of gestation, their distribution resembled th

Translaminar deficits in the retinae of albinos.

The central retina in albino mammals is poorly developed. There is a general reduction in ganglion cell density compared with the normal animal, and there are irregularities in the center to periphery gradient in ganglion cell density. It is not known whether, and if so to what extent, this abnormality is associated with deficits in other retinal layers. In this study the distribution of cells in the ganglion cell layer has been determined in horizontally sectioned eyes from pigmented and albino ferrets. This was undertaken to define the location of the region of highest cell density and the r

Identifying Areas Suitable for the Occurrence of Rift Valley Fever in North Africa: Implications for Surveillance.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that has caused widespread outbreaks throughout Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, with serious consequences for livestock-based economies and public health. Although there have never been any reports of RVF in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, it is a priority disease in the Maghreb, due to the threat of introduction of the virus through transboundary livestock movements or infected mosquito vectors. However, the implementation of surveillance activities and early warning contingency plans requires better knowledge of the epidemiolo

Evaluating the distribution and clustering of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in dogs across the United States of America.

SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in various animal species, including dogs. While human-to-animal transmission has been documented, the extent and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in dogs across the United States of America (USA) remain unclear. To address this need, we investigated the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in dogs in the USA and scanned for spatial and temporal clusters of high seroprevalence. Serum samples from 953 dogs from 37 states were screened by serological assays, and 58 (6.09%) samples tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. The lowest seropositivity was detected

Phylogenetic Characterization of Rabies Virus Field Isolates Collected from Animals in European Russian Regions in 2009-2022.

Rabies is a fatal disease of mammals that poses a high zoonotic risk to humans as well. The distribution of rabies is mainly driven by host animal migration and human-mediated dispersion. To contribute to the global understanding of the rabies virus (RABV) molecular epidemiology, 94 RABV field isolates collected from animals in 13 European Russian regions were phylogenetically characterized using the nearly full-size N gene nucleotide sequences. According to phylogenetic inferences, all isolates belonged to one of the two established phylogenetic groups, either group C (n = 54) or group D (n =

Human and animal dirofilariasis: the emergence of a zoonotic mosaic.

Dirofilariasis represents a zoonotic mosaic, which includes two main filarial species (Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens) that have adapted to canine, feline, and human hosts with distinct biological and clinical implications. At the same time, both D. immitis and D. repens are themselves hosts to symbiotic bacteria of the genus Wolbachia, the study of which has resulted in a profound shift in the understanding of filarial biology, the mechanisms of the pathologies that they produce in their hosts, and issues related to dirofilariasis treatment. Moreover, because dirofilariasis is a vector-bor

Mammalian viruses and Rickettsiae; their purification and recovery by cellulose anion exchange columns has significant implications.

Techniques of column chromatography with cellulose ion exchangers have been successfully applied to mammalian viruses and rickettsiae. Recovery of virus is excellent, and appreciable purification in terms of phosphorus and protein removal has been demonstrated. Elution characteristics of poliovirus (types 1, 2, and 3), and Coxsackie A9 virus are similar, whereas those of ECHO-13 and Colorado tick fever differ from them as well as from each other. Elution diagrams of preparations of ECHO-13 and polio 2 viruses grown on P(32)-labeled tissue cultures show a high degree of correlation between the

Anthropogenic activities drive the distribution and ecological risk of antibiotics in a highly urbanized river basin.

Although antibiotics are widely detected in river water, their quantitative relationships with influencing factors in rivers remain largely unexplored. Here, 15 widely used antibiotics were comprehensively analyzed in the Dongjiang River of the Pearl River system. The total antibiotic concentration in river water ranged from 13.84 to 475.04 ng/L, with fluoroquinolones increasing from 11 % in the upstream to 38 % in the downstream. The total antibiotic concentration was high downstream and significantly correlated with the spatial distribution of population density, animal production, and land-

Intracisternal vs intraventricular injection of AAV1 result in comparable, widespread transduction of the dog brain.

Widespread distribution of transduced brain cells following delivery of AAV vectors into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the cisterna magna (CM) has been demonstrated in large animal brains. In humans, intraventricular injection is preferred to intracisternal injection for CSF delivery due to the risk of brain stem injury. One study in the dog reported adverse reactions to AAV vectors expressing GFP injected into the lateral ventricle but not when injected into the CM. In contrast, AAV expressing mammalian genes in diseased animals have not triggered adverse responses since many genetic disea

Prevalence of Lyme Disease and Relapsing Fever Borrelia spp. in Vectors, Animals, and Humans within a One Health Approach in Mediterranean Countries.

The genus Borrelia has been divided into Borreliella spp., which can cause Lyme Disease (LD), and Borrelia spp., which can cause Relapsing Fever (RF). The distribution of genus Borrelia has broadened due to factors such as climate change, alterations in land use, and enhanced human and animal mobility. Consequently, there is an increasing necessity for a One Health strategy to identify the key components in the Borrelia transmission cycle by monitoring the human-animal-environment interactions. The aim of this study is to summarize all accessible data to increase our understanding and provide
