All-optical nanoscale logic components are regarded as fundamental building blocks of optical computing, enabling logic functions to be executed quickly and effectively avoiding thermal effects and signal crosstalk problems. Consequently, nanoscale all-optical computing is technologically forward-looking, but its realization necessitates the development of a multifunctional logic unit library. Here we construct a WS2/CrSBr heterostructure network to break the rotational symmetry of WS2, achieving a photoluminescence (PL) anisotropy ratio of 2.2. The twist angle of WS2/CrSBr has been further pr

The realization of extreme optical anisotropy is foundational for nanoscale light manipulation. The van der Waals (vdW) crystal MoOCl2 has emerged as a promising candidate for this quest, hosting hyperbolic plasmon polaritons in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths. However, the fundamental anisotropic dielectric tensor governing this behavior has remained elusive. Here, we resolve this problem by providing the first experimental determination of the full dielectric tensor of hyperbolic vdW MoOCl2. Via spectroscopic ellipsometry, Mueller matrix, and reflectance measurements, we quantify t

While birefringence is determined by both the structural units and spatial arrangement within a crystal, the design of the latter remains highly challenging, largely due to the difficulty in controlling microscopic packing. Molecular crystals feature host-guest architectures, which offer an effective means of structural design by enabling the spatial arrangement of the host framework through the guest molecules. Herein, the molecule S8, characterized by its homoatomic bonding and planar-like configuration, exhibits significant polarizability anisotropy; then, by employing a new guest-symmetry

Keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) relies on dense, spatially uniform femtosecond laser photodisruption to create intrastromal cleavage planes that permit controlled mechanical separation of corneal tissue. While scanning trajectories vary between discrete meander scans and continuous Archimedean spirals, the geometric limits governing coverage efficiency remain unified under local planarity. In this work, we present a mathematical framework describing the asymptotic fill fraction achieved by circular laser spots. By modeling the fundamental 3-bubble dynamics via Boolean triangle tes

Large- or medium-scale cosmic ray anisotropy at TeV energies has not previously been confirmed to vary with time. Transient anisotropy changes have been observed below 150 GeV, especially near the passage of an interplanetary shock and coronal mass ejection containing a magnetic flux rope ejected by a solar storm, which can trigger a geomagnetic storm with practical consequences. Here, we report the first observation of transient large-scale anisotropy in TeV cosmic ray ions using data from the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory. We analyze hourly skymaps of the transient cosmic ray in

This study explores the mechanisms of spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching in ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMS) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), emphasizing the impact of symmetry-breaking. Using micromagnetic simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, we examine several symmetry-breaking factors, including bias field misalignment, interlayer exchange coupling, out-of-plane spin polarization, and tilted magnetic anisotropy. The results reveal that bias field misalignment relative to the film plane significantly distorts the SOT switching hysteresis. Additionall

In a spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer, the pump and probe laser frequencies are tuned to the D1 transition line of alkali metal atoms to enhance measurement sensitivity. The D1 line, a non-cycling transition, exhibits a low absorption coefficient. This study theoretically analyzes the influence of different parameters on the absorption coefficient of the D1 line and proposes a polarization-dependent approach to enhance it. A frequency stabilization method based on modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) with an enhanced absorption coefficient is introduced. Compared with

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with large and tunable magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) provide unique opportunities to develop various spintronic devices. We, herein, propose an experimentally feasible 2D material platform, Mn2X2 (X = As, Sb), which is a family of intrinsic ferromagnet. Using first-principles calculations, we show that 2D Mn2X2 (X = As, Sb) with a robust ferromagnetic ground state exhibits not only a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), but also significant strain-driven modulation behaviors under external biaxial strain. The analysis of the results demon

The glymphatic system theory postulates that brain waste is removed through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. According to this theory, CSF in the subarachnoid space (SAS) moves to the perivascular space around the penetrating arteries, flows into parenchyma to mix with interstitial fluid and brain waste, and then moves to the perivenous space to be flushed out of the brain. Despite the controversies about the glymphatic theory, it is clear that SAS plays a key role in waste clearance. For instance, the SAS around the middle cerebral artery is known to be highly involved in glymphatic influx

The discovery of atomically thin van der Waals magnets (e.g., CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6) has triggered a renaissance in the study of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Most of the 2D magnetic compounds discovered so far host only one single magnetic phase unless the system is at a phase boundary. In this work, we report the near degeneracy of magnetic phases in ultrathin chromium telluride (Cr2Te3) layers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy highly desired for stabilizing 2D magnetic order. Single-crystalline Cr2Te3 nanoplates with a trigonal structure (space group P3̅1c) were grown by chemical

We report a simple, rapid, and reproducible fluorescence anisotropy-based method for measuring rate constants for acylation and deacylation of soluble penicillin binding protein (PBP) constructs by compounds in microtiter plates by means of competition with time-dependent acylation by BOCILLIN FL. The method is demonstrated by measuring the acylation rate constants of the PBP3 periplasmic domains from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii by BOCILLIN FL, aztreonam, meropenem, and ceftazidime. The new method requires very little protein and can be completed in approximately 1h per

Brain white matter myelin abnormalities and cell membrane fatty acid abnormalities have been implicated in schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. We investigated in young adults with a psychotic disorder (n=12) whether (poly)unsaturated fatty acid concentrations in erythrocyte membranes are related to an MRI measure of brain white matter, which depends on the degree of myelination. A significant correlation was found between total (poly)unsaturated fatty acid concentration and fractional anisotropy of a fronto-temporal white matter tract (r=0.503, P=0.048). Unsaturated fatty acids may

Functional crystals that exhibit a wide ultraviolet transparency window, a large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, and high optical anisotropy are currently of great interest because of their promising applications in laser systems. Herein, the reported 4-hydroxyprine-3-sulfonic acid (C5H5NSO4, compound 1), was identified as a promising candidate due to its combination of non-π-conjugated [SO3C] tetrahedra and π-conjugated [4-C5H5O] groups connected via S-C bonds. Notably, compound 1 exhibits strong optical anisotropy with a birefringence value of 0.295 at 550 nm (calculated value 0.3

Cementite (Fe3C) plays a key role in determining the mechanical performance of pearlitic and heat-resistant steels, where both its intrinsic elastic properties and interfacial bonding with ferrite are critical. In this study, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory were employed to systematically investigate the elastic anisotropy of orthorhombic Fe3C and the interfacial stability of α-Fe/Fe3C with three typical orientation relationships (Isaichev, Bagaryatsky, and Pitsch-Petch). The calculated elastic constants of Fe3C satisfy the mechanical stability criteria and rev

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) enable the support of spatially confined electromagnetic fields within the radiation continuum, exhibiting high-quality factors and nontrivial topology in the far field. This paper investigates a silicon nitride (Si3N4) photonic crystal incorporating rotated elliptical holes. This geometric anisotropy reduces the in-plane symmetry, lifts the original mode degeneracy, and redistributes coupling to the radiation channels. The Γ-point states remain radiative, whereas the two branches formed after degeneracy lifting separately support off-Γ BICs at nonzero in-p

Integrating high-mobility isotropic transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with anisotropic layered materials offers an ideal strategy to break through the application bottleneck of a single material. Van der Waals assembly has proven a direct route to realize anisotropic heterostructures for polarization-sensitive electronics and photoelectronics, yet conventional methods typically rely on artificial stacking of TMD materials with varying symmetries. This approach not only limits the efficiency of fabrication but also yields poor interfacial coupling, resulting in weak anisotropy in heterost

In this study, we examined how substrate temperature affects the structural, morphological, electronic, and magnetic properties of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) thin films synthesized via spray pyrolysis. We investigated the effect of substrate temperatures (300 °C, 325 °C, 350 °C, and 400 °C) on NiFe2O4 thin films. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed an inverse spinel structure with enhanced crystallinity at lower substrate temperatures. We employed high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to examine the surface morphology and elemental c
