Selective visual neglect in right brain damaged patients with splenial interhemispheric disconnection.

Left unilateral neglect is frequently reported after right hemispheric lesions of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) damaging the parietal-frontal cortical-subcortical network subserving space representation and awareness. However, accumulating evidence shows that neglect can also follow lesions of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) that do not directly affect this parietal-frontal network. Surgical studies in the monkeys have demonstrated that complete callosal resection combined with lesion of the right optic tract entirely deprives the right hemisphere of visual inputs from the left hemispac

A case of impaired verbalization but preserved gesticulation of motion events.

In most cultures, most of the time, when people talk they gesture. We took advantage of a rare opportunity to explore the relation between the verbalization and gesticulation of motion events by studying Marcel, an English speaker with a unilateral left-hemisphere lesion affecting frontal, parietal, and temporal sectors of the perisylvian cortex. Marcel has intact semantic knowledge of the three major classes of words that are commonly used in English descriptions of motion events - specifically, concrete nouns, action verbs, and spatial prepositions - as well as intact syntactic knowledge of

Semantic dementia and primary progressive aphasia: a problem of categorization?

The relationship between semantic dementia (SD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA) has been the subject of debate ever since the syndromes were first described, in converging streams of research from the neuropsychological and neurologic communities. The most salient clinical features of SD are anomia with circumlocution and semantic paraphasia, single-word comprehension deficit, and reduced category fluency. Of critical importance is the fact that patients also show deficits on non-verbal tasks using visual, auditory, and other modalities, suggesting that the key impairment in SD is a brea

Temporary and permanent signs of interhemispheric disconnection after traumatic brain injury.

The corpus callosum is frequently damaged by closed head traumas, and the resulting deficits of interhemispheric communication may vary according to the specific position of the lesion within the corpus callosum. This paper describes a single case who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury resulting in a lesion of the posterior body of the corpus callosum. Among the classical symptoms of interhemispheric disconnection, left hand anomia, left upper limb ideomotor dyspraxia, left visual field dyslexia and dysnomia, and left ear suppression in a dichotic listening task were observed shortly aft

What are the facts of semantic category-specific deficits? A critical review of the clinical evidence.

In this study we provide a critical review of the clinical evidence available to date in the field of semantic category-specific deficits. The motivation for undertaking this review is that not all the data reported in the literature are useful for adjudicating among extant theories. This project is an attempt to answer two basic questions: (1) what are the categories of category-specific deficits, and (2) is there an interaction between impairment for a type of knowledge (e.g., visual, functional, etc.) and impairment for a given category of objects (e.g., biological, artefacts, etc.). Of the

The influence of psycholinguistic variables on articulatory errors in naming in progressive motor speech degeneration.

We describe an analysis of speech errors on a confrontation naming task in a man with progressive speech degeneration of 10-year duration from Pick's disease. C.S. had a progressive non-fluent aphasia together with a motor speech impairment and early assessment indicated some naming impairments. There was also an absence of significant phonological or semantic impairment. In order to examine naming difficulties and the factors that influence his speech production errors, we selected 210 words varying in frequency, age of acquisition (AoA), imageability, phonemic length and syllable length and

Reading lexically without semantics: evidence from patients with probable Alzheimer's disease.

Recent modifications of the lexical model of oral reading make the prediction that under conditions where sublexical reading processes alone cannot achieve the target pronunciation (i.e., when words have exceptional spellings or when sublexical processes are impaired), patients with severe semantic impairment should have more difficulty reading aloud semantically impaired words than semantically retained words. In a battery of lexical-semantic and reading tasks, two neurologically normal control subjects and two subjects with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and only moderate semantic impairm

Semantic errors in a deep dyslexic.

A case of a Swedish-speaking deep dyslexic is reported whose semantic paralexias appeared to result mainly from a lexical retrieval failure in oral reading. He was able to draw correct pictures of the written words for which he had simultaneously produced a semantically erroneous oral reading response. Repeated attempts to correct paralexic responses were common, indicating that the patient was often aware of the errors. His lexical retrieval problems and semantic errors extended to naming as well, and the results support Nolan and Caramazza's (1982, Brain and Language, 16, 237-264), dual-defi

Rate variables and automatized naming in developmental dyslexia.

The rate variable in rapid automatized naming (RAN) was investigated in 50 adolescent and 40 adult students with developmental dyslexia, in matched normal controls, and in learning-disabled students without reading difficulties. Visual stimuli depicting familiar colors and common objects were presented in isolation at three film speeds and three exposure times. Film speed and exposure time contributed as independent variables to error rate; and dyslexic subjects of both age groups made significantly more naming errors than controls. Dyslexic subjects also responded with longer naming latencies

The graphemic buffer and attentional mechanisms.

Two patients with acquired dysgraphia were reported. The patients' performance in various written and oral spelling tasks converge in support of the hypothesis that they have selective damage, within the spelling system, to the Graphemic Buffer. Although the patients present with comparable patterns of error types, they differ in the distribution of errors as a function of letter position in words. The patients' patterns of errors are compared to previously reported patterns of spelling errors in dysgraphic patients and are discussed in terms of hypothesized mechanisms that operate on the repr

Nonspecificity of semantic impairment in dementia of Alzheimer's type.

Two psychometric tests designed to evaluate "verbal fluency" and "naming" as a measure of semantic memory were presented to 18 patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia, 16 other patients with multi-infarct dementia, and 14 age-matched control subjects. The diagnosis of multi-infarct dementia and Alzheimer's-type dementia was based on the commonly accepted criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 3. Although the patients with Alzheimer and multi-infarct dementias, respectively, suffered from a comparable degree of dementia (as determined by the Mini-Mental State

Naming problems do not reflect a second independent core deficit in dyslexia: double deficits explored.

The double deficit hypothesis states that naming speed problems represent a second core deficit in dyslexia independent from a phonological deficit. The current study investigated the main assumptions of this hypothesis in a large sample of well-diagnosed dyslexics. The three main findings were that (a) naming speed was consistently related only to reading speed; (b) phonological processing speed and naming speed loaded on the same factor, and this factor contributed strongly to reading speed; and (c) although general processing speed was involved in speeded naming of visual items, it did not

Cognitive neuropsychology and its application to children.

Cognitive neuropsychology has been used successfully in the analysis of adult neuropsychological disorders in both verbal and nonverbal domains. When applied to children, it aims to construct models on the basis of functional lesions manifest within developing systems and provides a theoretical framework within which patterns of intact and deficient skills can be charted over time. These patterns constrain possible underlying models. In highlighting potential individual differences in the acquisition of skills and indicating intact skills within subjects, cognitive neuropsychology may also ena

The persistence of rapid naming problems in children with reading disabilities: a nine-year follow-up.

In this study 9 children (6 boys, 3 girls) with reading disabilities and specific difficulties in rapid serial naming were followed from age 9 years to age 18 years. This group was taken from an earlier study sample of 82 third-grade children with learning disabilities. Tests of rapid serial naming, reading and spelling, general intelligence, articulation speed, and word fluency were administered to the subjects and to a matched control group (n = 10) in the initial study (at age 9) and in the present follow-up study (at age 18). The results showed that difficulties in both rapid naming and re

Acquired epileptic aphasia: neuropsychologic follow-up of 12 patients.

A study of specific neuropsychologic, neurolinguistic, and behavioral features of acquired epileptic aphasia or Landau-Kleffner syndrome was conducted in a group of 12 patients followed-up for 2-15 years (mean: 8 yr). Seventy-five percent had exhibited some language disturbance prior to acquired epileptic aphasia. Even when 9 patients had normal electroencephalographic findings in the long-term course of the disease, only 3 achieved normal language. No patient with persisting electroencephalographic abnormalities recovered normal or near normal language. The need to perform detailed neurolingu

Deterioration of word meaning: implications for reading.

We investigated six patients with progressive focal dementia or progressive aphasia, who showed impairments in knowledge of word meaning ranging from moderate to very severe. In all cases, a test of oral word reading demonstrated preserved reading of words with regular spelling-to-sound correspondences (e.g. MINT), but impaired reading of words with atypical correspondences (e.g. PINT). The level of success on these "exception" words was significantly related to word frequency, and the most common error was the assignment of a more typical spelling-sound correspondence. Various explanations ar

We describe our further investigations of the retrograde amnesia in a single case. R.F.R. became globally amnesic following an attack of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis. Drawing objects from memory in aphasia.

The ability of aphasic patients to draw from memory objects with a characteristic shape has been investigated. Their capacity to reproduce the form of real objects was studied by showing them for a short time line drawings of simple objects. When the patient had analysed and recognized the figure, the model was hidden from view and the subject was asked to draw the same object from memory. This Drawing from Memory task was administered to 54 aphasics, 67 patients with right hemisphere lesions, 44 nonaphasic left brain-damaged patients and 23 normal controls. The influence of visuoconstructive

Gamma Oscillation Regularity-Guided Intraoperative Language-Area Visualization and Functional Monitoring of Language-Related Cortical Recruitment Under General Anesthesia in Glioma Surgery.

BACKGROUND: For tumors located in eloquent brain regions, mapping these areas is typically performed to guide surgical resection. We have achieved safe and reliable epilepsy surgery by visualizing epileptic lesions using gamma oscillation regularity (GOR) analysis. In this report, we present a unique case of glioblastoma resection near the language area, where safe and proactive tumor removal was successfully performed using intraoperative language-area visualization and functional monitoring of language-related cortical recruitment under general anesthesia based on GOR analysis. METHODS: A m
