The submandibular and buccal glands of the Giant Ant-eater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) have been studied by means of a series of carbohydrate histochemical methods, including a broad spectrum of PO-lectin procedures. The seromucous cells (Gl. submandibularis) and mucous cells (Gl. buccalis) of the glandular acini, as well as the secretion in the excretory duct system exhibited very strong to strong reactions for neutral and acidic glycoconjugates. The venom of the pavement ant, Tetramorium caespitum, is used for prey capture, defense and social communication. The venom is predominantly proteinaceous in nature and contains various free amino acids, predominantly aspartic and glutamic acid, as well as histamine. The activities of the enzymes phospholipase and hyaluronidase, which are believed to be present in all hymenopteran venoms could not be detected. The objective of our project was to identify the sex attractant pheromone of queens of the slave-making ant Polyergus samurai, which was characterized as a blend of methyl 6-methylsalicylate and methyl 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanoate. Both compounds were identified in volatiles collected from squashed heads of queens, and in field trials, a blend of the two compounds was highly attractive to males. ANT1 is one of the nuclear genes responsible of autosomal dominant progressive external ophthalmoplegia (adPEO) with mitochondrial DNA multiple deletions. The course of ANT1- related adPEO is relatively benign, symptoms being generally restricted to skeletal muscle. Here we report the case of an Italian 74 years old woman with ANT1-related adPEO and dementia. Further studies are needed to assess the prevalence of central neurological manifestations in ANT1 mitochondrial disease.

We describe here a co-occurrence (i.e. a syninclusion) of ants and termites in a piece of Mexican amber (Totolapa deposit, Chiapas), whose importance is two-fold. First, this finding suggests at least a middle Miocene antiquity for the modern, though poorly documented, relationship between Azteca ants and Nasutitermes termites.
