Anxiety disorders in children are common. The current international classification systems--DSM and ICD--have increased the reliability of the diagnostic classification of anxiety disorders among children, too. The clinical picture of separation anxiety disorder of childhood, the phobic anxiety disorder of childhood, the social anxiety disorder of childhood, and the overanxious disorder of childhood will be described. The paper will conclude with a description of the diagnostic procedure. A case study will serve to illustrate the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure.

METHODS: Commercial films have been used as teaching aids in child psychiatry seminars. In this child psychiatry seminar, Invaders From Mars is viewed, and relevant teaching points are discussed with child psychiatry residents.
RESULTS: The response of child psychiatry residents has been positive, with high ratings.

PROBLEM: Undiagnosed and untreated anxiety in adolescents is often associated with greater rates of mood and behavior problems, somatic complaints, and risk for future psychiatric disorders. METHODS. A self-report anxiety instrument was administered as part of a community survey of 466 rural adolescents.
FINDINGS: Anxiety symptoms were strongly correlated with both physical complaints and depression. Females had higher scores for total anxiety and the anxiety subtypes of generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, and school phobia.

In the present paper, we comment on the psychological and emotional disorders occurring after surgery. We surveyed 150 children that were admitted in several surgical units of our Children's Hospital. We used the Vernon's test in a questionaire. We reached a high level of comprehension. Seventeen subjects with panic disorder (PD) and 16 subjects with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were interviewed to obtain their developmental and psychiatric histories. The groups reported a similar incidence of early separation, separation disorder in childhood, and separation causing exacerbation of symptoms. The groups differed significantly in that those with PD had a higher incidence of a grossly disturbed childhood environmental and major depressive episodes. The results of this preliminary study support the validity of the DSM-III distinction between PD and GAD.
