AIMS: To determine women's perceptions and experiences of childbirth in United Arab Emirates [UAE].
METHODS: A consecutive sample of 715 women who delivered during a 3 month period wer interviewed on the third postnatal day about their experience and satisfaction with maternity care using a structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: 95 (13.2%) women had negative feelings including fear, anger, sorrow and regret, guilt, jealousy, sense of failure and disappointment while the rest felt that childbirth was enjoyable and that they had been well-informed, especially by nurses, about their perinatal care.

BACKGROUND: Bartter's syndrome (BS) is an inherited disease of renal potassium wasting characterized by hypokalemic alkalosis, normal blood pressure, vascular insensitivity to pressor agents and elevated plasma concentrations of renin and aldosterone. It is caused by generalized hyperplasia of the juxtaglomerular apparatus at the site of renin production caused by mutations in the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter gene, NKCC2. This paper reports on 2 hemolytic serious reactions in 2 Arabian patients because of the use of primaquine as presumptive antimalarial treatment given in Cuba to all travellers from countries where malaria is endemic. Taking into account the non-existence of imported malaria cases in travellers from the Arab-world since more then 15 years and the frequency of individuals presenting with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency it is recommended not to use this therapeutic procedure, and to maintain the rest of surveillance measures to all travellers from such region.

The authors report 44 cases of hemoglobin O Arab share out in 3 phenotypes (A O Arab, C O Arab and S O Arab). The study of this abnormal hemoglobin has allowed the following conclusions: The Hb O Arab is a rare mutant of hemoglobin. The heterozygote form A O Arab and the association Hb C--Hb O Arab do not present any clinical and hematological manifestations. The associations Hb S--Hb O Arab brings about a serious hemoglobinopathy which has clinical and hematological features like the sickle-cell disease (SSFA2).

A potential genetic marker for hypertriglyceridemia and coronary disease, an apolipoprotein-CIII gene allele displaying a single nucleotide substitution, was found in 71% of Arabs with primary hypertriglyceridemia. BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are serious inherited heart diseases with various causative mutations identified. The full spectrum of causative mutations remains to be discovered, especially in understudied populations.
METHODS: Here, we established the DOHA Registry and Biobank for cardiomyopathies in Qatar, followed by sequencing of 174 genes on 51 HCM and 53 DCM patients, and 31 relatives.
