Diagnostic performance of clusterin in hepatocellular carcinoma: A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Clusterin (CLU) is a pleiotropic protein with numerous functions. It has recently attracted considerable attention owing to its association with cancer progression and metastasis. However, its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been investigated. This meta-analysis is the first evaluation of the diagnostic performance of CLU in HCC. METHODS: Articles published in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and China Science and Technology Journal Database until January 2022 were searched. Studies that reported the usefulness of CLU for th

Prediction of adult post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus: a risk score based on clinical data.

There is lacking research on risk factors and prediction models associated with Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH). Thus, this present study aimed to analyze the risk factors of PHH and establish a risk-scoring system through a large-scale study. A retrospective study of 382 patients with intracranial hemorrhage assessed age, history and diagnosis, Glasgow coma score (GCS), and fever time. After univariate and logistic regression analysis, a risk scoring system was established according to independent risk factors and evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC). Of the 382 patients, 133 (

Diagnostic Performance and Appropriate Cut-Offs of Different Anthropometric Indicators for Detecting Children with Overweight and Obesity.

In the clinical settings, different anthropometric indicators like neck circumference (NC), waist circumference (WC), midupper arm circumference (MUAC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and arm-to-height ratio (AHtR) have been suggested for evaluating overweight and obesity in children. The comparative ability of these indicators in Pakistan is yet unknown. This study is aimed at examining the validity of different anthropometric indicators of overweight and obesity simultaneously and at determining their superlative cut-off values that would correctly detect overweight and obesity in children. Time-dependent ROC curve analysis in medical research: current methods and applications.

BACKGROUND: ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve analysis is well established for assessing how well a marker is capable of discriminating between individuals who experience disease onset and individuals who do not. The classical (standard) approach of ROC curve analysis considers event (disease) status and marker value for an individual as fixed over time, however in practice, both the disease status and marker value change over time. Individuals who are disease-free earlier may develop the disease later due to longer study follow-up, and also their marker value may change from basel

Comparison between simulated scenarios and Swedish COVID-19 cases throughout the pandemic.

This study assesses the accuracy of COVID-19 scenarios for new infections produced by the Swedish Public Health Agency (PHAS) from December 1, 2020, to March 20, 2023. We introduce a Similarity Error ([Formula: see text]), which evaluates the dissimilarity between simulated and observed case time series using the following attributes: area under the curves, peak timings, and growth/decline rates before and after peaks. Rather than using an arbitrary cut-off, we used a threshold determined through Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis, with performance evaluated using the Area Under

Assessing generalizability of a dengue classifier across multiple datasets.

Early diagnosis of dengue fever is important for individual treatment and monitoring disease prevalence in the population. To assist diagnosis, previous studies have proposed classification models to detect dengue from symptoms and clinical measurements. However, there has been little exploration of whether existing models can be used to make predictions for new populations. In this study, we assess the generalizability of dengue classification models to new datasets. We trained logistic regression models on five publicly available dengue datasets from previous studies, using three explanatory

Likelihood ratio combination of multiple biomarkers via smoothing spline estimated densities.

The diagnostic accuracy of multiple biomarkers in medical research is crucial for detecting diseases and predicting patient outcomes. An optimal method for combining these biomarkers is essential to maximize the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve (AUC). Although the optimality of the likelihood ratio has been proven by Neyman and Pearson, challenges persist in estimating the likelihood ratio, primarily due to the estimation of multivariate density functions. In this study, we propose a non-parametric approach for estimating multivariate density functions by utilizing

Classification of Wideband Tympanometry by Deep Transfer Learning With Data Augmentation for Automatic Diagnosis of Otosclerosis.

Otosclerosis is a common disease of the middle ear leading to stapedial fixation. Its rapid and non-invasive diagnosis could be achieved through wideband tympanometry (WBT), but the interpretation of the raw data provided by this tool is complex and time-consuming. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) could potentially be applied to this situation to help the clinicians categorize WBT data. A dataset containing 135 samples from 80 patients with otosclerosis and 55 controls was obtained. We designed a lightweight CNN to categorize samples into the otosclerosis and control. Receiver operating cha

Near-infrared spectroscopy as a potential non-invasive tool in the assessment of disease activity in vitiligo patients.

Vitiligo is a common chronic depigmenting skin disease. We explored the utility of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in the identification of spectral changes associated with disease activity in vitiligo patients. In vivo spectral measurements were performed directly on the perilesional skin of 70 vitiligo patients. Relative intensities (second derivative) at 1139, 1344, 1646 and 1839 nm appeared to be significantly lower in the perilesional region of patients with active vitiligo compared with stable disease, while the intensity at 1884 nm seemed to be significantly higher. A classification mo

Diagnostic Criteria of Ulcerative Pyoderma Gangrenosum: A Delphi Consensus of International Experts.

IMPORTANCE: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare inflammatory skin condition that is difficult to diagnose. Currently, it is a "diagnosis of exclusion," a definition not compatible with clinical decision making or inclusion for clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To propose and validate diagnostic criteria for ulcerative pyoderma gangrenosum. EVIDENCE REVIEW: Diagnostic criteria were created following a Delphi consensus exercise using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method. The criteria were validated against peer-reviewed established cases of pyoderma gangrenosum and mimickers using k-fold cross-validation

Drug repositioning for enzyme modulator based on human metabolite-likeness.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the metabolite-likeness of the drug space has emerged and has opened a new possibility for exploring human metabolite-like candidates in drug discovery. However, the applicability of metabolite-likeness in drug discovery has been largely unexplored. Moreover, there are no reports on its applications for the repositioning of drugs to possible enzyme modulators, although enzyme-drug relations could be directly inferred from the similarity relationships between enzyme's metabolites and drugs. METHODS: We constructed a drug-metabolite structural similarity matrix, which cont

Chemokine CXC Ligand 13 in Cerebrospinal Fluid Can Be Used as an Early Diagnostic Biomarker for Lyme Neuroborreliosis: A Meta-Analysis.

Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB), which is the most common neurological manifestation of Lyme disease (LD), seriously impairs both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Current LNB diagnostic methods and criteria are not very effective. Recently, several studies have indicated that a high concentration of the chemokine CXC ligand 13 (CXCL13) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could be used as a new biomarker for the diagnosis of LNB. Thus, we carried out a meta-analysis to systematically analyze the data from these studies to evaluate the value of CXCL13 as an LNB biomarker. After searching for art

Detection and density estimation of goblet cells in confocal endoscopy for the evaluation of celiac disease.

Celiac Disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy, diagnosed in the clinical practice by intestinal biopsy and the concomitant presence of a positive celiac serology. Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (CLE) allows skilled and trained experts to potentially perform in vivo virtual histology of small-bowel mucosa. In particular, it allows the qualitative evaluation of mucosa alteration such as a decrease in goblet cells density, presence of villous atrophy or crypt hypertrophy. We present a semi-automatic computer-based method for the detection of goblet cells from confocal endoscopy images, who

Elevated Plasma Phosphorylated Tau 181 in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau181 ) is reliably elevated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but less explored is its specificity relative to other neurodegenerative conditions. Here, we find novel evidence that plasma p-tau181 is elevated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative condition typically lacking tau pathology. We performed a detailed evaluation to identify the clinical correlates of elevated p-tau181 in ALS. METHODS: Patients were clinically or pathologically diagnosed with ALS (n = 130) or AD (n = 79), or were healthy non-impaired controls (n = 26). Recei
