Noise-induced effects within the inner ear have been well investigated for several years. However, this peripheral damage cannot fully explain the audiological symptoms in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), e.g. tinnitus, recruitment, reduced speech intelligibility, hyperacusis. There are few reports on central noise effects. Noise can induce an apoptosis of neuronal tissue within the lower auditory pathway. Higher auditory structures (e.g. medial geniculate body, auditory cortex) are characterized by metabolic changes after noise exposure. However, little is known about the microstructural ch

The purpose of the present study was to investigate responses from the unanesthetized chinchilla auditory cortex (AC) to conditions producing a masking level difference (MLD) in perceptual studies, both before and after inner hair cell (IHC) loss caused by carboplatin. Tungsten electrodes were chronically implanted in the right AC (active) and anterior cranium (common) in six adult chinchillas. Following a recovery period, AC responses were obtained from the unanesthetized animal placed in a passive restraint. Toneburst input/output functions were obtained. Tonebursts (500 Hz) ranged from 0 to

In a previous paper [Popelár et al., Hear. Res. 26, 239-247 (1987)] we have shown that amplitudes of the auditory cortex evoked responses (AC-ER) in awake guinea pigs were enhanced for several hours after 1 h of noise exposure whereas amplitudes of the compound potential of the auditory nerve (CAP) and of the inferior colliculus evoked responses (IC-ER) declined. The present study demonstrates that the duration of the AC-ER amplitude increase is related to the intensity of the noise exposure (white noise, for 30 min or 1 h, intensity range 105-125 dB). The AC-ER amplitude as well as the thresh

Ablation of one auditory cortex at birth in rats results in the formation of aberrant crossed projections from the intact hemisphere. These aberrant projections extend throughout most of the corticorecipient zone of the contralateral inferior colliculus and can be traced as far rostral as the contralateral medial geniculate nucleus. The aberrant crossed corticothalamic axons arise from layer V pyramidal neurons in the intact auditory cortex.

Language impairment is comorbid in most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but its neural mechanisms are still poorly understood. Some studies hypothesize that the atypical low-level sensory perception in the auditory cortex accounts for the abnormal language development in these children. One of the potential non-invasive measures of such low-level perception can be the cortical gamma-band oscillations registered with magnetoencephalography (MEG), and 40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response (40 Hz ASSR) is a reliable paradigm for eliciting auditory gamma response. Although there is re

In this work, we investigated the use of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with neurofeedback training (NFT) to teach volitional down-regulation of the auditory cortex (AC) using directed attention strategies as there is a growing interest in the application of fMRI-NFT to treat neurologic disorders. Healthy participants were separated into two groups: the experimental group received real feedback regarding activity in the AC; the control group was supplied sham feedback yoked from a random participant in the experimental group and matched for fMRI-NFT experience. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The auditory efferent system is a complex network of descending pathways, which mainly originate in the primary auditory cortex and are directed to several auditory subcortical nuclei. These descending pathways are connected to olivocochlear neurons, which in turn make synapses with auditory nerve neurons and outer hair cells (OHC) of the cochlea. The olivocochlear function can be studied using contralateral acoustic stimulation, which suppresses auditory nerve and cochlear responses. In the present work, we tested the proposal that the corticofugal effects that modul

BACKGROUND: The cross-modal conflict deficit is a key feature of schizophrenia. However, it remains largely unknown whether cross-modal conflict in schizophrenia diverges at distinct processing stages and its potential association with the auditory cortex.
METHODS: In Experiment 1, we divided cross-modal conflict into semantic and response stages, and we investigated the cross-modal conflict between schizophrenia patients (n = 30) and health individuals (n = 32). In Experiment 2, we utilized tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation) to inhibit the activity of the auditory cortex in healt

Acoustic stimuli where the spectrum is time-varying are ubiquitous in natural sounds, including animal vocalizations, human speech, and music. Early studies of such stimuli involving frequency-modulated sweeps reveal that neurons in the primary auditory cortex of a variety of mammals show differences in firing rates depending on either the direction of the sweep and/or the sweep velocity. Psychophysical studies have also shown that the perception of such time-varying stimulus parameters is quite acute, underscoring the importance of such signals in normal acoustic perception. The responses of

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been studied as a potential treatment for many brain conditions. Although tDCS is well tolerated, continued study of perceptual and cognitive side effects is warranted, given the complexity of functional brain organization. This study tests the feasibility of brief tablet-based tasks to assess auditory and cognitive side effects in a recently reported pilot study of auditory-cortex tDCS in chronic tinnitus and attempts to confirm that this untested multisession tDCS protocol does not worsen hearing.

Chronic vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been shown to facilitate learning, but effects of acute VNS on neural coding and behavior remain less well understood. Ferrets implanted with cuff electrodes on the vagus nerve were trained by classical conditioning on an auditory tone frequency-reward association. One tone was associated with reward while another tone was not. Tone frequencies and reward associations were changed every 2 d, requiring learning of a new relationship. When tones were paired with VNS, animals consistently learned the new association within 2 d. When VNS occurred randomly

It has been proposed that the auditory cortex in the deaf humans might undergo task-specific reorganization. However, evidence remains scarce as previous experiments used only two very specific tasks (temporal processing and face perception) in visual modality. Here, congenitally deaf/hard of hearing and hearing women and men were enrolled in an fMRI experiment as we sought to fill this evidence gap in two ways. First, we compared activation evoked by a temporal processing task performed in two different modalities, visual and tactile. Second, we contrasted this task with a perceptually simila

Previous experiments have acknowledged that inappropriate or missing auditory inputs during the critical period of development cause permanent changes of the structure and function of the auditory system (Bures et al., 2017). We explore in this study how developmental noise exposure influences the coding of temporally structured stimuli in the neurons of the primary auditory cortex (AC) in Long Evans rats. The animals were exposed on postnatal day 14 (P14) for 12 minutes to a loud (125 dB SPL) broad-band noise. The responses to an amplitude-modulated (AM) noise, frequency-modulated (FM) tones,

The categorical perception of lexical tones is important to understand tonal languages. Recent studies have provided electrophysiological evidence for the categorical perception of lexical tones at the cortical level; however, whether neural correlates exist at subcortical levels remain unknown. In this study, by using across-category and within-category lexical tone contrasts with the equivalent physical interval, we recorded deviance detection activities at both the brainstem (reflected by frequency following response) and cortical levels (reflected by mismatch negativity) simultaneously. We

Neuroglial activation has been recognized as a pathological hallmark of a variety of neurological diseases, yet the role of neuroglia in tinnitus hasn't been well established so far. To explore the potential roles of two types of glia cells (astrocyte and microglia) in the development of tinnitus, we examined markers associated with them in the primary auditory (A1) cortex and medial geniculate body (MGB) of rats with salicylate-induced tinnitus. The results demonstrated that acute and chronic administrations of salicylate could cause reversible tinnitus-like behavior in rats. The expression l

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to mediate activity-dependent changes in the developing auditory system. Its expression in the brainstem auditory nuclei, auditory cortex and hippocampus of neonatal chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) in response to in ovo high intensity sound exposure at 110 dB (arrhythmic sound: recorded traffic noise, 30-3000 Hz with peak at 2700 Hz, rhythmic sound: sitar music, 100-4000 Hz) was examined to understand the previously reported altered volume and neuronal number in these regions. In the brainstem auditory nuclei, no mature BDNF, but proBDNF at t

Until the late twentieth century, it was believed that different sensory modalities were processed by largely independent pathways in the primate cortex, with cross-modal integration only occurring in specialized polysensory areas. This model was challenged by the finding that the peripheral representation of the primary visual cortex (V1) receives monosynaptic connections from areas of the auditory cortex in the macaque. However, auditory projections to V1 have not been reported in other primates. We investigated the existence of direct interconnections between V1 and auditory areas in the ma

This study focused on the response properties underlying selectivity for the rate of frequency modulated (FM) sweeps in the auditory cortex of anesthetized C57bl/6 (C57) mice. Linear downward FM sweeps with rates between 0.08 and 20 kHz/ms were tested. We show that at least two different response properties predict FM rate selectivity: sideband inhibition and duration tuning. Sideband inhibition was determined using the two-tone inhibition paradigm in which excitatory and inhibitory tones were presented with different delays. Sideband inhibition was present in the majority (88%, n = 53) of neu

SIRT1 is a highly conserved NAD(+)-dependent protein deacetylase known to have protective effects against a variety of age-related diseases. However, there is a lack of information concerning SIRT1 expression in the cochlea and auditory cortex of C57BL/6 mice, a mouse model of age-related hearing loss. Using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, we show that SIRT1 is abundantly expressed in the inner hair cells, strial marginal cells, strial intermediate cells, type I and type IV fibrocytes of the spiral ligament and spiral ganglion neurons. In addition, moderate SIRT1 is also detected in the outer

It has recently been conjectured that dyslexia arises from abnormal auditory sampling. What sampling rate is altered and how it affects reading remains unclear. We hypothesized that by impairing phonemic parsing abnormal low-gamma sampling could yield phonemic representations of unusual format and disrupt phonological processing and verbal memory. Using magnetoencephalography and behavioral tests, we show in dyslexic subjects a reduced left-hemisphere bias for phonemic processing, reflected in less entrainment to ≈30 Hz acoustic modulations in left auditory cortex. This deficit correlates with
