Audiovisual speech is more than the sum of its parts: Auditory-visual superadditivity compensates for age-related declines in audible and lipread speech intelligibility.

Multisensory input can improve perception of ambiguous unisensory information. For example, speech heard in noise can be more accurately identified when listeners see a speaker's articulating face. Importantly, these multisensory effects can be superadditive to listeners' ability to process unisensory speech, such that audiovisual speech identification is better than the sum of auditory-only and visual-only speech identification. Age-related declines in auditory and visual speech perception have been hypothesized to be concomitant with stronger cross-sensory influences on audiovisual speech id

Animal models of hidden hearing loss: Does auditory-nerve-fiber loss cause real-world listening difficulties?

Afferent innervation of the cochlea by the auditory nerve declines during aging and potentially after sound overexposure, producing the common pathology known as cochlear synaptopathy. Auditory-nerve-fiber loss is difficult to detect with the clinical audiogram and has been proposed to cause 'hidden hearing loss' including impaired speech-in-noise perception. While evidence that auditory-nerve-fiber loss causes hidden hearing loss in humans is controversial, behavioral animal models hold promise to rigorously test this hypothesis because neural lesions can be induced and histologically validat

Selective auditory attention and silence elicit auditory hallucination in a nonclinical sample.

INTRODUCTION: Several investigations have shown that the occurrence of auditory hallucinations (AH) is not restricted to neuropsychiatric patients. The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of attention and sustained silence on the emergence of AH in a nonclinical sample. METHODS: Sitting in a silent sound booth, 66 adults were studied under different attention demands and then where asked about their auditory perception. RESULTS: While performing a Hanoi Tower in silence, 10.6% of the individuals had hallucination-like perceptions (music, voices, and others). This rate decreased to 6.0

Audiovisual integration and lipreading abilities of older adults with normal and impaired hearing.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to examine how age-related hearing impairment affects lipreading and auditory-visual integration. The working hypothesis for the investigation was that presbycusic hearing loss would increase reliance on visual speech information, resulting in better lipreading and auditory-visual integration in older persons who have hearing impairment, compared with older persons who have normal hearing. DESIGN: This study compared the performance of 53 adults with normal hearing (above age 65) and 24 adults with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment (above age

Amateur singers' advantage in Mandarin tone perception and imitation.

Musical advantage in speech perception has been widely studied for instrumentalists, but it remains unclear whether singers share this benefit. In speech production, although singers' superiority has been observed relative to non-musicians, little is known about how they achieve this advantage. To address these gaps, this study investigated (i) whether singers outperformed non-musicians in Mandarin tone perception and imitation, (ii) whether singers' potential advantage in imitation depended on auditory feedback, and (iii) whether both groups' imitation improved across repetitions. Singers and

Brain mapping of auditory hallucinations and illusions induced by direct intracortical electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The exact architecture of the human auditory cortex remains a subject of debate, with discrepancies between functional and microstructural studies. In a hierarchical framework for sensory perception, simple sound perception is expected to take place in the primary auditory cortex, while the processing of complex, or more integrated perceptions is proposed to rely on associative and higher-order cortices. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that auditory symptoms induced by direct electrical stimulation (DES) offer a window into the architecture of the brain networks involved in auditory ha

The neural correlates of 'deaf-hearing' in man: conscious sensory awareness enabled by attentional modulation.

Attentional modulation of normal sensory processing has a two-fold impact on human brain activity: activation of a network of localized brain regions is associated with paying attention, and activation of specific sensory regions is enhanced relative to passive stimulation. The mechanisms underlying attentional modulation of perception in patients with lesions of sensory cortices are less well understood. Here we report a unique patient suffering from extensive bilateral destruction of the auditory cortices (including the primary auditory fields) who demonstrated conscious perception of the on

Characteristics of auditory agnosia in a child with severe traumatic brain injury: a case report.

We present a case that is unusual in many respects from other documented incidences of auditory agnosia, including the mechanism of injury, age of the individual, and location of neurological insult. The clinical presentation is one of disturbance in the perception of spoken language, music, pitch, emotional prosody, and temporal auditory processing in the absence of significant deficits in the comprehension of written language, expressive language production, or peripheral auditory function. Furthermore, the patient demonstrates relatively preserved function in other aspects of audition such

Hearing in time: evoked potential studies of temporal processing.

This article reviews the temporal aspects of human hearing as measured using the auditory evoked potentials. Interaural timing cues are essential to the detection and localization of sound sources. The temporal envelope of a sound--how it changes in amplitude over time--is crucially important for speech perception. Time is taken to integrate, identify, and dissolve auditory streams. These temporal aspects of human hearing can be examined using the auditory evoked potentials, which measure the millisecond-by-millisecond activity of populations of neurons as they form an auditory percept. Auditory neuropathy.

Neural disorders of the auditory nerve are associated with particular disorders of auditory perceptions dependent on processing of acoustic temporal cues. These include: (1) speech perception; (2) localizing a sound's origin in space; and (3) identifying sounds in background noise. Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a consequence of: (1) presynaptic disorders affecting inner hair cell ribbon synapses; (2) postsynaptic disorders of auditory nerve dendrites; and (3) postsynaptic disorders of auditory nerve axons. The etiologies of these disorders are diverse, similar to other cranial or peripheral neur

Seeing and hearing others and oneself talk.

We studied the modification of auditory perception in three different conditions in twenty subjects. Observing other person's discordant articulatory gestures deteriorated identification of acoustic speech stimuli and modified the auditory percept, causing a strong McGurk effect. A similar effect was found when the subjects watched their own silent articulation in a mirror and acoustic stimuli were simultaneously presented to their ears. Interestingly, a smaller but significant effect was even obtained when the subjects just silently articulated the syllables without visual feedback. On the ot

Neural mechanisms of auditory discrimination of long-duration tonal patterns: a neural modeling and fMRI study.

Language perception comprises mechanisms of perception and discrimination of auditory stimuli. An important component of auditory perception and discrimination concerns auditory objects. Many interesting auditory objects in our environment are of relatively long duration; however, the temporal window of integration of auditory cortex neurons processing these objects is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to make active use of short-term memory in order to construct and temporarily store long-duration objects. We sought to understand the mechanisms by which the brain manipulates long-duration t

Reducing Tinnitus via Inhibitory Influence of the Sensorimotor System on Auditory Cortical Activity.

Tinnitus is the subjective perception of a sound without corresponding external acoustic stimuli. Research highlights the influence of the sensorimotor system on tinnitus perception. Associated neuronal processes, however, are insufficiently understood, and it remains unclear how and at which hierarchical level the sensorimotor system interacts with the tinnitus-processing auditory system. We therefore asked 23 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus (11 males) to perform specific exercises, aimed at relaxing or tensing the jaw area, which temporarily modulated tinnitus perception. Associated

Cortical potentials evoked by tone frequency changes can predict speech perception in noise.

Accurate and objective assessment of higher order auditory processing is challenging and mainly relies on evaluations that require a subjects' active participation in tests such as frequency discrimination or speech perception in noise. This study investigates the value of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) evoked in response to auditory change stimuli, known as acoustic change complexes (ACCs), as an objective measurement of auditory performance in hearing impairment. Secondary objectives were to assess the effect of hearing loss and non-professional musical experience on the ACC, an

Neural processing of laughter in depression.

Laughter can convey social intent ranging from acceptance (friendly inclusive laughter) to rejection (malign taunting laughter). We investigated perception of auditory and visual laughter in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) versus healthy controls (HC). 48 MDD patients and 52 HC rated 60 laughter recordings presented auditorily or visually regarding the expressed social intent during an fMRI experiment at 3T. Depression severity was assessed based on questionnaires. MDD patients rated the perceived social intent of the laughter significantly more negative than HC across both modal

"Doctor, I Hear Music": A Brief Review About Musical Hallucinations.

Auditory hallucinations are defined as the abnormal perception of sound in the absence of an external auditory stimulus. Musical hallucinations constitute a complex type of auditory hallucination characterized by perception of melodies, music, or songs. Musical hallucinations are infrequent and have been described in 0.16% of a general hospital population. The auditory hallucinations are popularly associated with psychiatric disorders or degenerative neurological diseases but there may be other causes in which the patient evolves favorably with treatment. With this clinical case we want to str

Early tone perception ability in Mandarin-speaking children with simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants 24 months post-operatively.

ObjectiveSimultaneous bilateral cochlear implantation has been shown to provide long-term benefits in children suffering from severe-to-profound hearing loss. However, very little research has been conducted on long-term benefits in Mandarin-speaking children. We aimed to (1) evaluate tone perception with simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) compared to unilateral CIs; and (2) evaluate early auditory and speech skills.MethodsThe longitudinal study was comprised of 20 participants, 10 with unilateral and 10 with simultaneous bilateral CIs. Participants received a CI at a mean age of 1

Cochlear Synaptopathy due to Mutations in OTOF Gene May Result in Stable Mild Hearing Loss and Severe Impairment of Speech Perception.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital profound hearing loss with preserved cochlear outer hair cell activity (otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonic) is the most common phenotype associated with mutations in the OTOF gene. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the auditory dysfunction in five patients (2 adults and 3 children) carrying biallelic mutations in OTOF, who showed an uncommon phenotype of mild hearing impairment associated with severe difficulties in speech perception and delay of language development. DESIGN: Patients underwent audiometric asse
