The severity of injury to cardiovascular autonomic pathways following clinical spinal cord injury (SCI) can be evaluated with spectral analyses. Whether this technique provides a translatable assessment of cardiovascular autonomic function in rodent SCI is unknown. Beat-to-beat blood pressure and pulse interval were measured in male rats 1 month after complete T3 or T10 SCI, and in uninjured control animals. Univariate autoregressive spectral analyses were performed and the power of the low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and very low frequency (VLF) peaks identified. Frequency domain var

Many chronic Western diseases result from lifestyles that include refined diets, poor bowel habits, limited physical exercise and suboptimal patterns of childbirth. Western diets result in reduced stool weights, increased bowel transit times and persistent physical efforts during defaecation. Prolonged physical efforts during defaecation and childbirth cause latent, or direct, injuries to branches of the cardiac (thorax), coeliac (abdomen) and hypogastric (pelvis) plexi. Injuries to autonomic nerves result in impaired visceral function including visceral dysmotility, tissue hypoplasia and hype

Evidence linking psychological stress to allergy has grown with our increased understanding of the natural history and pathophysiology of these disorders and the neurobiology of stress vulnerability. However, the specific pathways that increase vulnerability to developing allergy and associated disorders remain to be elucidated. Autonomic nervous system functioning (autonomic balance) has been implicated in allergy for some time albeit links between autonomic balance and immune function in early development have been under studied. Starting in utero, stress may influence the programming of bra

To investigate the role of neural pathways in the nonasthmatic response to eucapnic hyperventilation with below freezing air five diabetic patients with severe symptomatic autonomic neuropathy were studied. Their responses were compared with those shown by five diabetic patients without autonomic neuropathy and five non-diabetic controls. After bronchial provocation testing with cold air the diabetic patients with autonomic neuropathy did not show a significant fall in specific airways conductance (mean (SE) maximum percentage fall 2.0 (3)%), whereas conductance fell in the diabetic patients w

BACKGROUND: There are sparse data on the recovery of sympathetic skin response (SSR) following decompressive surgery in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). We designed a study to assess SSR in patients with moderate and severe (Nurick grades 3, 4 and 5) CSM, and its recovery following central corpectomy (CC).
METHOD: We conducted a prospective study on 19 patients with moderate and severe CSM who underwent CC from June 2008 to December 2010. Autonomic dysfunction was defined as the presence of 'bladder dysfunction' or 'orthostatic hypotension'. All patients underwent SSR test

Previously, we observed that olfactory stimulation with scent of lavender oil (SLVO) suppressed sympathetic nerve activities and elevated gastric vagal (parasympathetic) nerve activity (GVNA), decreased plasma glycerol concentration and body temperature, and enhanced appetite in rats. Here, we further showed that olfactory stimulation with SLVO lowered renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and blood pressure (BP) and elevated GVNA in urethane-anesthetized rats. Olfactory stimulation with linalool, a component of lavender oil, also elicited decreases in RSNA and BP and an increase in GVNA in

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) is a serious and often under-recognized complication of diabetes that can affect any division of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), presenting with a wide range of signs and symptoms. The pathophysiology of DAN involves a complex interplay of hyperglycemia-driven metabolic and vascular pathways, oxidative stress, inflammation, and autonomic imbalance, ultimately leading to progressive nerve dysfunction. Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) has emerged as a particularly severe condition, associated with heightened risk of arrhythmia, silent myocardial i

BACKGROUND: Pelvic surgery carries an inherent risk of autonomic nerve injury leading to genitourinary and bowel dysfunction due to the close proximity of the superior hypogastric plexus (SHP). The aim of this study was to define the detailed anatomy of SHP and identify its relationship with the vascular landmarks and ureters for pelvic autonomic nerve-preserving surgery.
METHODS: A cadaveric study on the detailed anatomy of the SHP was conducted in our surgical anatomy research unit. Between 02/2019 and 10/2019, macroscopic anatomical dissections were performed on 45 fresh adult cadavers (39

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar autonomic nerve injury is an underappreciated complication of anterior lumbar spinal surgery. A detailed description of lumbar autonomic nerve anatomy would be helpful for surgeons to minimize the risk of this complication.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the anatomical characteristics of lumbar autonomic nerves and provide a better understanding of these nerves for anterior lumbar spinal surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: A dissection-based study of 10 embalmed male cadavers.
METHODS: The lumbar autonomic nerves from 10 embalmed male cadavers were dissected i

The occurrence of several biologically active neuropeptides (calcitonine gene-related peptide, leu-enkephaline, neuropeptide Y, substance P, and vasoactive intestinal peptide) or nitric oxide-synthesizing enzymes (neuronal nitric oxide synthase), tyrosine hydroxylase, vesicular acetylcholine transporter, and their co-localization with tyrosine hydroxylase were investigated by immunohistochemistry in the retractor clitoridis muscle of slaughtered sows. Single immunolabelling revealed that tyrosine hydroxylase and neuropeptide Y immunoreactive nerve fibres were the most numerous, followed by the

BACKGROUND: Total mesorectal excision is considered the gold standard for rectal cancer surgery, but the anatomic descriptions and nomenclatures that are used are hardly clear and sometimes are contradictory. The aim of this study was to clarify the delimitation of the mesorectum and anatomic landmarks of the correct surgical plane for total mesorectal excision.
METHODS: Cadaveric dissections were performed on 32 pelvises.
RESULTS: The pelvic fasciae around the rectum can be divided into visceral fascia, vesicohypogastric fascia, and parietal fascia. The lateral ligament is the dense connect

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Traditionally recognized for its role in calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism, vitamin D is increasingly acknowledged for its broader physiological effects, particularly in cardiovascular health. One area of growing interest is its influence on cardiac autonomic function. Cardiac autonomic dysfunction, characterized by an imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, is a well-established predictor of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. This narrative review aims to synthesize the current literature on the association between vitamin D status and cardiac autono

Autonomic function may be adequately tested with noninvasive tests of sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways, including: the response of blood pressure to change in posture and isometric contraction, heart rate response to standing, variation in heart rate with respiration, Valsalva ratio, sweat tests, and plasma noradrenaline measurements. Abnormal results in two or more of these tests indicate autonomic dysfunction. Intraarterial catheterization and tests of vasomotor function are usually required only in doubtful cases or for research purposes. Treatment of autonomic dysfunction is focuse

Noradrenaline responses following 10 mg intravenous edrophonium were assessed in 32 insulin-treated diabetic men, allocated to 4 groups according to their responses to 5 cardiovascular autonomic tests. The group with the most severe autonomic involvement had no rise in plasma noradrenaline, in contrast to the other 3 groups, whereas the heart rate fell in all 4 groups. There were significant correlations between individual noradrenaline responses, cardiovascular reflex tests, 24 hour heart rate variation and pupil cycle time, depending on whether predominantly parasympathetic or sympathetic pa

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neuropathy characterized by motor disorders, but it has also been associated with the presence of autonomic alterations as a result of degradation of the dopaminergic system. Studying the relation between Band Power time series (BPts) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), has been proposed as a tool to explore the bidirectional communication pathways between cortex and autonomic control. This work presents a primer analysis on study brain ↔ heart interaction on a databse of PD patients under two conditions: without and after levadopa (L-dopa) intake. Additionally a he

The overall organization of the peripheral autonomic nervous system has been known for many decades, but the mechanisms by which it is controlled by the central nervous system are just now coming to light. In particular, two major issues have seen considerable progress in the past decade. First, the pathways that provide visceral sensation to conscious perception at a cortical level have been elucidated in both animals and humans. The nociceptive system runs in parallel to the pathways carrying visceral sensation from the cranial nerves and may be considered in itself a component of visceral s

BACKGROUND: The role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) on atrial fibrillation (AF) is difficult to demonstrate in the intact human left atrium (LA) due to technical limitations of the current electrophysiological mapping technique. We examined the effects of the ANS on the initiation and maintenance of AF by employing a realistic in silico human left atrium (LA) model integrated with a model of ganglionated plexi (GPs).
METHODS: We incorporated the morphology of the GP and parasympathetic nerves in a three-dimensional (3D) realistic LA model. For the model of ionic currents, we used a hum

In addition to their more studied cognitive and motor effects, neurodegenerative diseases are also associated with impairments in autonomic function - the regulation of involuntary physiological processes. These autonomic impairments manifest in different ways and at different stages depending on the specific disease. The neural networks responsible for autonomic regulation in the brain and body have characteristics that render them particularly susceptible to the prion-like spread of protein aggregation involved in neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, the axons of these neurons - in both
