Persimmon-Derived Tannins Ameliorated Cholesterol Levels in Liver Tissues Induced by a High-Fat Diet and Concurrently Increased the Diversity of the Gut Microbiota of Rats.

A number of studies have suggested that tannins improve lipid metabolism disorders. Based on the close relationship between liver and the gut microbiota through the gut-liver axis, we hypothesized that tannins may reduce lipid accumulation in the liver by modulating the gut microbiota. To test this hypothesis, we administered persimmon-derived tannins to rats fed a high-fat diet for 11 wk. Blood parameters and cholesterol, TG, and lipid droplet areas in the liver tissues were measured, and the gut microbiota of the cecal contents was analyzed using 16S rDNA sequencing. The results showed that

ABPs: diffusible antibacterial toxins secreted by and active against diverse gram-positive bacteria.

Competition between organisms is a ubiquitous feature of life on Earth and a major driver of evolutionary innovation. As Earth's most diverse and abundant organisms, bacteria employ numerous strategies to inhibit the growth of competitors, ranging from the production of diffusible antibiotic metabolites to the secretion of sophisticated protein toxins. Although secreted antibacterial protein toxins have been extensively studied in gram-negative bacteria, analogous systems employed by gram-positive organisms remain comparatively poorly understood. Recent work has shed light on a widespread fami

Metagenomic profiling of biliary microbiota reveals distinct microbial and functional features in cholelithiasis and cholecystic polyps.

Cholelithiasis and cholecystic polyps are common gastrointestinal conditions, and recent studies suggest that biliary microbiota dysbiosis may be closely associated with their pathogenesis. In this small cohort (n = 11), bile samples were aseptically collected during surgery from 6 patients with cholelithiasis and 5 patients with cholecystic polyps. Metagenomic sequencing was performed to investigate differences in the microbial composition and functional profiles between the 2 groups. The results revealed that the microbial α diversity of bile from patients with cholelithiasis was significant

Psyllium-derived, medium-molecular weight arabinoxylan enables modulation of the gut microbiota and metabolites in type 2 diabetic mice.

Patients with diabetics usually exhibit disordered glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as disrupted intestinal microecology. Dietary adjustment is essential for controlling diabetes. This study evaluated the ameliorative effects of psyllium-derived medium-molecular-weight arabinoxylan (MMW-AX) on glycolipid biochemical indicators, pathological symptoms, and intestinal microbial diversity in mice with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM mice fed a high-sugar and high-fat (HSHF) diet combined with streptozotocin (STZ) exhibited severely impaired blood lipid levels, insulin function, liver ti

Characterization of the vaginal microbiota in women of childbearing age with different Nugent scores.

The present study investigated the richness and diversity of vaginal microbiota among a cohort of 60 childbearing-age women. The samples were classified into three groups: healthy control (HC), bacterial vaginosis (BV), and BV intermediate (BVI). The number of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) per sample ranged from 50 to 212, with three groups having 469 (HC), 482 (BVI), and 456 (BV) OTUs. Alpha diversity analysis (p < 0.05) showed that HC had lower diversity than the BV and BVI groups, whereas richness indices did not differ significantly across the groups. Beta diversity analysis (p < 0.05

Maternal Gut Microbiota in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Fetal Macrosomia: Is There an Association?

Background/Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with altered maternal gut microbiota and increased risk of large-for-gestational age (LGA) births. The contribution of gut microbiota to fetal overgrowth in GDM, independent of glycemic control, remains unclear. Methods: In this pilot longitudinal study, the gut microbiota of 18 women with GDM was followed from the second (2T) to the third trimester (3T). Maternal fecal samples were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and associations between microbial profiles and infant birth weight were examined. In addition, these a

Characteristics of the Gut Microbiota in Different Segments of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Big-Eyed Bamboo Snake (Pseudoxenodon macrops).

Snakes are model animals to study energy balance, but studies on the gut microbiota of the animals are rather scarce. To fill the gap, we used metagenome sequencing to investigate the microbial community composition and adaptability in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine of Big-eyed Bamboo Snake. The results showed that there was no significant differences in α-diversity among different gastrointestinal segments. Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, and Bacillota were the most abundant phyla. The dominant genera in the stomach and small intestine were similar, while those in the large i

Diethyl ethylphosphonate retardants disturbed the gut microbiome and metabolite SCFAs in vitro based on simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem.

Diethyl ethylphosphonate (DEEP) as a novel organophosphorus flame retardant received increasing attention and its structure was discovered. But there are currently insufficient studies on how DEEP exposure affects the gut microbiome. In this study, the effects of DEEP on the structure and function of the human gut microbiota were examined using the SHIME system. Results from high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene show that the high dose DEEP exposure reduced the Shannon and Simpson index in the transverse and descending colon. The Bacillota had the highest proportion while the proport

The gastrointestinal microbiome of browsing goats (Capra hircus).

Despite the growing interest in the ruminants' gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiomes' ability to degrade plant materials by animal husbandry and industrial sectors, only a few studies addressed browsing ruminants. The present work describes the taxonomic and functional profile of the bacterial and archaeal communities from five different gastrointestinal sections (rumen, omasum-abomasum, jejunum, cecum and colon) of browsing Capra hircus, by metabarcoding using 16S rRNA genes hypervariable regions. The bacterial communities across the GITs are mainly composed of Bacillota and Bacteroidota.

Exploratory microbiota-metabolite alterations associated with cognitive impairment after repeated low-dose sevoflurane exposure in mice.

BACKGROUND: Repeated low-dose sevoflurane exposure may affect cognition, but the relationship between such exposure, gut microbial composition, and circulating metabolites remains unclear. This study examined an experimental proof-of-concept exposure model and treated microbiota-metabolite findings as exploratory associations. METHODS: Mice were exposed to 100 ppm sevoflurane for 2 h/day over 7 consecutive days, followed by Morris water maze testing without a long-term recovery follow-up. Gut microbiota and serum metabolites were profiled by shotgun metagenomic sequencing and LC-MS metabolomi

PGPR-Treated Spent Mushroom Substrate Enhances Lignocellulose Degradation, Enzyme Activities, and Microbial Restructuring to Sustain Blueberry Rhizosphere Fertility.

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a major agricultural byproduct whose complex lignocellulosic matrix hinders direct reuse and poses environmental risks when stockpiled. This study evaluated whether pretreatment with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could enhance SMS as a soil amendment for blueberry cultivation. Two PGPR-treated SMS formulations, along with raw SMS and a blank control, were applied to blueberry seedlings in a 10-month greenhouse experiment. Plant height, rhizosphere soil nutrients, enzyme activities, lignocellulose fractions, and the microbial communities were moni

Differential effects of sulfide-induced transformation of biodegradable and conventional microplastics on sedimentary CO2 and CH4 emissions: Underlying microbiome-mediated mechanisms.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in sediments presents serious ecological risks. Although sulfidation is a key aging process in anoxic environments, its impact on sedimentary CO2 and CH4 emissions and underlying microbiome-mediated mechanisms remains unclear, particularly for biodegradable versus conventional MPs. Sediment incubation experiments with pristine and sulfidation-aged polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) revealed distinct carbon-related greenhouse gases patterns driven by material-specific microbial responses. Compared to controls, pristine PLA significantly enhanced

Microbial Succession on Honey Bee Body Surfaces Reflects Behavioral Maturation.

Behavioral maturation is essential for the proper functioning of honey bee societies and is regulated by multiple factors such as juvenile hormone (JH) and nutritional deficiency. Although recent studies have shown that surface-associated microbiota in insects can modulate host behavior, the relationship between body surface microbiota and behavioral maturation in honey bees remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to determine whether the surface microbial communities of honey bees shift with behavioral maturation. By using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we analyzed the surface microb

Genomic characterization of Terrisporobacter glycolicus from a case of monomicrobial gas gangrene.

We report a rare case of monomicrobial gas gangrene of the upper limb caused solely by Terrisporobacter glycolicus, an obligate anaerobe, in a 24-year-old male with a recent traumatic (burn) injury and history of substance abuse, who developed rapid-onset swelling, pain, and skin discolouration in the left arm, ultimately requiring surgical amputation. The pathogen was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole genome sequencing (WGS). This case emphasises the potential severity of anaerobic monomicrobial infections in tra
