One-year follow-up study on golf injuries in Australian amateur golfers.

BACKGROUND: Considering its popularity, little epidemiologic literature exists on golf injuries. HYPOTHESIS: The low back is the most common injury location for golf-related injury. Most golf injuries occur as a result of the golf swing, and occur mostly at impact. The variables age, handicap, practice habits, and warm-up habits are associated with injury. METHODS: A prospective survey over 1 year was used to study golf injuries among 588 golfers at 8 Australian golf clubs. Information collected included golfers' injuries sustained during the year, location of injury, onset, mechanism of inj

Catastrophic injuries in pole vaulters: a prospective 9-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: A prior review of catastrophic pole vaulting injuries from 1982 through 1998 revealed an average of 2.0 injuries per year, with 69% (1.38 per year) of the injuries secondary to athletes landing off the sides or back of the landing pad and 25% (0.5 per year) from athletes landing in the vault box. In 2003, several rule changes for the sport of pole vaulting were mandated, including enlarging the minimum dimensions of the landing pad. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Our goals were to (1) identify the post-2003 rule change incidence and profile of catastrophic pole vaulting injuries through 2011

Traumatic lumbar vertebral ring apophysis fracture with disk herniation in an adolescent.

We present a case of a 15-year-old male with history of back pain and bilateral lower limb radiculopathy due to fall. The magnetic resonance imaging scan showed disc bulge at L2-L3 level causing compression on contained nerve roots. In this case, computed tomography scan was indispensable for diagnosis and classification of the vertebral apophyseal fracture and to guide appropriate further management. Apophyseal ring fracture is an uncommon cause of back pain with radiculopathy in adolescents and athletes. High degree of suspicion is necessary to differentiate these injuries from disc herniati

Missed diaphragmatic injury after blunt trauma presenting with colonic strangulation: a rare scenario.

Diaphragmatic rupture occurs in 4%-5% cases of thoracoabdominal injuries. It may present acutely, in a delayed fashion or as a complicated hernia. We are describing the case of a young male presenting in respiratory distress with history of chest trauma 1.5 years back. On investigation, he was found to have left side diaphragmatic hernia containing gangrenous colon with lung collapse. The patient underwent successful operative intervention and discharged after 25 days of hospital stay. Record review suggested that the above mentioned diaphragm injury was missed in his evaluation 1.5 years back

Description of musculoskeletal injuries occurring in female soldiers deployed to Afghanistan.

Each year musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) result in thousands of lost duty days and medical discharges. Women represent 15% of the Army and have higher incidence of injury than male soldiers; studies that have investigated MSIs in deployed women are lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate MSIs in women during a 9-month deployment to Afghanistan. Participants were recruited from three Brigade Combat Teams. Participants completed a demographic survey before deployment and a second survey on occupational demands and MSIs after deployment. Of the 160 wom

Biomechanical aspects of lumbar spine injuries in athletes: a review.

One of the areas of the body which is very often injured by athletes is the lower lack, or the lumbar area of the spine. This problem is of some concern to physical educators, athletic therapists, coaches, athletes, and physicians. The type of injury which occurs in the lumbar spine is dependent on the direction, magnitude, and the point of application of the forces to the spine. This part of the body is susceptible to injury due to the large forces which must be supported, which include the body weight and any external weights, as well as the forces due to very high accelerations of the body

Indications for surgery in upper cervical spine injury.

20% of all spine injuries are cervical spine injuries. Surgical treatment of these injuries must take into account the great mobility of this part of the spinal column. Therefore, biomechanical aspects must be considered, especially in the upper cervical spine-C1 and C2. Describing our own therapeutical regimen in 35 patients with unstable upper cervical spine injuries we explain the biomechanical back-ground and review the literature. It becomes evident that ventral approaches are superior to dorsal techniques for decompression, reposition, and stabilization with minimal loss of mobility.

Injuries and exposures among ocean safety providers: A review of workplace injuries and exposures from 2007-2012.

Research on workplace injuries and exposures in ocean safety personnel remains limited. Despite increasing beach attendance and reliance on lifeguards for protection, the most common types of injuries, equipment resulting in injuries, and environmental exposures remains unknown. This study reviewed OSHA 300 logs summarizing workers' compensation claims from 2007-2012 to identify common body parts injured, action at time of injury, equipment causing injury, and environmental exposures. A secondary phase consisted of a cross-sectional anonymous survey to determine demographics, body part injured

Isolated rupture of teres major in a goalkeeper.

A complete rupture of the teres major is an extremely rare injury and rarely described in the literature. We report the first case of an isolated rupture of the teres major in a professional football goalkeeper. The diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion and complementation by image examinations. Conservative treatment has a high success rate with early return to sport.

Differences in Injury Incidence Between Player Positions Across All Rugby Formats-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Rugby is a high-intensity contact sport with a high incidence of injuries. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the injury incidences between forwards and backs in all rugby formats (Rugby Union, Seven, and League). The PubMed (National Library of Medicine), Web of Science (Clarivate), Scopus (Elsevier), and SPORTDiscus (EBSCO) databases were searched from inception to October 10, 2024. A study was eligible if the number of rugby injuries per exposure time for backs and forwards was reported. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were com
