BACKGROUND: Severe asthma is a heterogeneous disease, which is characterized by airway damage and remodeling. BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of immediate allergy is based on clinical data, skin prick tests (SPT), and measurements of allergen-specific IgE (sIgE). Basophil activation test (BAT) can supplement these methods and obviate their disadvantages, and possibly replace allergen challenge tests, such as a nasal provocative test (NPT). Basophil leucocytes are a significant component of the infiltrating cells in a variety of tissue reactions in guinea pigs. However, little is known about the participation of basophils in similar reactions in most other animal species. The circulating blood, skin and small intestinal mucosa of sheep were examined after they had received stimuli known to elicit basophil-rich responses in guinea pigs but relatively few basophils were found.

After reviewing the experience of various authors we applied the Basophil Degranulation Test (BDT) in the study of sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, so as to evaluate its diagnostic use. Fifty-five patients with asthma and/or rhinitis and a positive skin test to the mentioned antigen, as well as 20 control subjects were studied.
