Research on vibration control and nonlinear dynamic behavior of railway vehicle systems based on nonlinear energy sinks.

During long-term service, railway vehicles are prone to abnormal vibrations of the car body and bogie frames. To suppress vibrations in both the car body and bogie frames simultaneously, this paper proposes the distributed installation of nonlinear energy sinks (NES) on railway vehicles, with multiple NES units installed on the car body and bogie frames. First, a nine-degree-of-freedom coupled dynamic model of the railway vehicle and NES is established. An approximate analytical solution of the model is derived using the harmonic balance method and verified by numerical simulations. The effect

Novel insights into courtship and mating behavior of Anastatus japonicus enhance pest control and mass-rearing efficiency.

The solitary egg endoparasitoid, Anastatus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae), holds substantial potential for effectively controlling hemipterous and lepidopterous pests. The present study endeavors to elucidate the courtship and mating behavior of this parasitoid, as a comprehensive understanding of female and male mating status and its implications on offspring production remains inadequately documented. Courtship and mating behavior process impacted by food, age, host, body size, virgin and mated both sexes were monitored by direct observation, while fecundity and female proportion of vir

Nicotine enhances the ability of cues to control behavior and evoke dopamine release in the dorsolateral striatum.

Nicotine is one of the most widely used addictive substances, yet its primary reinforcing effects are relatively weak. Nicotine's ability to potentiate responding for conditioned reinforcers is thought to drive persistent drug use. Here, we show that nicotine failed to alter responding maintained by a primary sucrose reinforcer (under a variable-ratio [VR] 11 schedule) across a broad dose range (0.01-1.0 mg/kg). Yet, nicotine enhanced operant behavior under a second-order reinforcement schedule in which responses produced sucrose-associated cues and were only intermittently reinforced by sucro

PCDH17 restricts dendritic spine morphogenesis by regulating ROCK2-dependent control of the actin cytoskeleton, modulating emotional behavior.

Proper regulation of synapse formation and elimination is critical for establishing mature neuronal circuits and maintaining brain function. Synaptic abnormalities, such as defects in the density and morphology of postsynaptic dendritic spines, underlie the pathology of various neuropsychiatric disorders. Protocadherin 17 (PCDH17) is associated with major mood disorders, including bipolar disorder and depression. However, the molecular mechanisms by which PCDH17 regulates spine number, morphology, and behavior remain elusive. In this study, we found that PCDH17 functions at postsynaptic sites,

State-Dependent Biomechanical Behavior of Oropharyngeal Structures in Apneic and Control Subjects: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Rationale: Apneic individuals have reduced airway caliber during sleep. The biomechanical changes in upper airway anatomy contributing to this airway narrowing are largely unknown. Objectives: We sought to investigate the state-dependent (wake vs. sleep) biomechanical behavior of the upper airway soft-tissue and craniofacial structures. Methods: Upper airway magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 15 sleep-deprived control subjects (apnea-hypopnea index, <5; 0.3 ± 0.5 events per hour) and 12 sleep-deprived apneic subjects (apnea-hypopnea index, ⩾5; 35.2 ± 18.1 events per hour) during wake

Need for approval and antisocial behavior moderate the effect of socioemotional cues on adolescent girls' cognitive control.

To examine whether need for approval (NFA) and antisocial behavior (ASB) moderate the effects of socioemotional stimuli on cognitive control, 88 girls (Mage  = 16.31 years; SD = 0.84; 65.9% White) completed a socioemotional Go/No-go and questionnaires. At high approach NFA, girls responded more slowly during appetitive than control (b = -8.80, p < .01) and aversive (b = -5.58, p = .01) trials. At high ASB, girls responded more slowly (b = -6.12, p = .02) and less accurately (OR = 1.11, p = .03) during appetitive than aversive trials; at low ASB, girls responded more slowly during aversive than

The effect of impulsivity and inhibitory control deficits in the saccadic behavior of premanifest Huntington's disease individuals.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to test response inhibition in premanifest Huntington's disease individuals (Pre-HD), in the context of a saccadic paradigm with working memory demands and fronto-executive load as a way to measure inhibitory control deficits and impulsive behavior in Huntington's disease (HD). METHODS: The oculomotor function of 15 Pre-HD and 22 Control individuals was assessed using an experimental paradigm comprising four horizontal saccadic tasks: prosaccade (PS), antisaccade (AS), 1- or 2-back memory prosaccade (MPS), and 1- or 2-back memory antisaccade (MAS). Sedentary Behavior and Alcohol Consumption Increase Breast Cancer Risk Regardless of Menopausal Status: A Case-Control Study.

Identification of modifiable risk factors for breast cancer is critical for primary prevention of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate how certain lifestyle variables modify the chances of developing breast cancer based on menopausal status. A case-control study was performed in a group of 542 women, 197 who were diagnosed with breast cancer and 344 control individuals. The groups were matched by age, body mass index, and menopausal status. Participants were evaluated for level of physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, weight, height, and waist circumference (WC).

Repeated cocaine exposure dysregulates cognitive control over cue-evoked reward-seeking behavior during Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer.

Drug-paired cues acquire powerful motivational properties, but only lead to active drug-seeking behavior if they are potent enough to overwhelm the cognitive control processes that serve to suppress such urges. Studies using the Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) task have shown that rats pretreated with cocaine or amphetamine exhibit heightened levels of cue-motivated food-seeking behavior, suggesting that exposure to these drugs sensitizes the incentive motivational system. However, the PIT testing protocol can also create conflict between two competing behavioral responses to the rewa

Estrogen, progesterone, and pregnancy termination alter neural activity in brain regions that control maternal behavior in rats.

Estrogen stimulates maternal behavior in rats, but does so most potently when its administration is temporally coupled with the termination of pregnancy. In contrast, this effect of estrogen is blocked when subjects are administered a large dose of progesterone concurrent with estrogen. The current study was performed to examine the neural circuitry influenced by these treatments and pup presentation during the hormonally-mediated onset and inhibition of maternal behavior. In experiment I, estrogen induced c-Fos immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) in virgin rats, but w

Inhibition and the control of behavior. From Gall to Freud via Phineas Gage and the frontal lobes.

In his On the Functions of the Brain and Each of Its Parts, Franz Joseph Gall proposed that significant behaviors resulted from certain independent, irreducible, and fundamental faculties or propensities. There seems to be nothing in his system for explaining how two or more faculties interact, especially how one comes to predominate over another, other than the implicit notion that the stronger will be manifested. This peculiarity of Gall's system is consistent with the predominately "excitatory" physiology of his time in which there was no place for an independent inhibitory process. Despite

Effects of drugs on stimulus control of behavior. III. Analysis of effects of pentobarbital and d-amphetamine.

Key-peck responses of pigeons on one of two keys were reinforced intermittently under a multiple fixed-interval schedule. In one component of the schedule, a houselight provided general illumination of the experimental chamber, and responses on a red key produced food according to a 5-min fixed-interval schedule. In the alternate component, the houselight was off and responses on an amber key produced food according to the 5-min fixed-interval schedule. Each response randomly (P = .5) alternated the positions of the key colors (right or left) and the two components (houselight on or off) alter

Microstructural analysis of chlordiazepoxide's effects on food preference behavior in roman high-, control- and low-avoidance rats.

The effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) on feeding performance and on rearing activity were investigated using a food preference test in three Roman strains: Roman Low Avoidance (RLA), Roman Control Avoidance (RCA), and Roman High Avoidance (RHA). The aims of the study were to assess the responses of the three strains to a free choice of familiar and novel foods following a period of food deprivation, and to answer the important psychopharmacogenetic question of whether or not the strains would display differential responsivity to CDP challenges. No strain differences were discovered in relation

Beyond poverty, tungiasis is associated with family characteristics and parenting behavior: a case control study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations. METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

Drug discrimination learning: Interoceptive stimulus control of behavior and its implications for regulated and dysregulated drug intake.

Drug discrimination research has generated rich evidence for the capacity of interoceptive drug stimuli to control behavior by serving as discriminative cues. Owing to its neuropharmacological specificity, drug discrimination learning has been widely used to characterize the stimulus effects and neuropharmacological underpinning of drugs. Apart from such utility, discriminative drug stimuli may help regulate drug use by disambiguating conditioned associations and post-intake outcomes. First, this review summarizes the evidence supporting interoceptive regulation of drug intake from the literat

Maladaptive task-unrelated thoughts: Self-control failure or avoidant behavior? Preliminary evidence from an experience sampling study.

INTRODUCTION: Task-unrelated thoughts (TUT) play an important role in everyday life functioning (e.g., anticipating the future, or providing a mental break). However, TUT might also be maladaptive, impairing cognitive performance emotion regulation, and increasing the risk of psychological disorders. In the present study, we aimed to test how self-reported control over TUT and task valence moderate the link between task difficulty and TUT intensity, testing the context regulation and avoidant alternative hypotheses of TUT occurrence. METHOD: Forty-nine participants took part in an experience

Gene × Environment Interactions in the Development of Preschool Effortful Control, and Its Implications for Childhood Externalizing Behavior.

This study examined the role of gene × environment interaction (G × E) in the development of effortful control (EC) and externalizing symptoms (EXT). Participants included 361 adopted children, and their Adoptive Parents (APs) and Birth Mothers (BMs), drawn from the Early Growth and Development Study. The primary adoptive caregivers' (AP1) laxness and overreactivity were assessed when children were 27-months-old, and used as indices of environmental influences on EC. Heritable influences on child EC were assessed by the BMs' personality characteristics (emotion dysregulation, agreeableness). S
