Punding in non-demented Parkinson's disease patients: Relationship with psychiatric and addiction spectrum comorbidity.

Punding is a stereotyped behavior characterized by an intense fascination with a complex, excessive, non-goal oriented, repetitive activity, associated with dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) in patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) and with dopamine agonists in several conditions. We studied 25 PD patients with punding behaviors, and compared them to 130 PD controls. The psychiatric evaluation included: the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS); the SCales for Outcomes in PArkinson's disease-Psychiatric Complications (SCOPA-PC); the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Version 11 (BIS-11

6-Minute Walk Test: Exploring Factors Influencing Perceived Intensity in Older Patients Undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation-A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: In cardiac rehabilitation, the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) is a standard assessment of initial evaluation. It measures walking distance as a surrogate of submaximal physical performance. Thereby, a subjective rating of perceived exertion, assessed by the Borg Scale, plays an important role. It has been observed that patients with coronary heart disease often rate themselves lower than the person supervising the test. Since this discrepancy might lead to inadequate exercise prescription, this study aims to explore reasons for low self-rating. Methods: In a qualitative stud

An exploratory study of the relationship of symptom domains and diagnostic severity to PET scan imaging in borderline personality disorder.

The purpose of this report is to describe the relationship between clinical rating assessments of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and regional brain metabolism as measured by positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucuse-F18 (PET-FDG). Fourteen women with BPD underwent PET-FDG scanning in a medication-free state. Correlations were performed on a voxel-by-voxel basis with Buss-Durkee Hostility Index (BDHI) and the Zanarini Rating Scale for Borderline Personality Disorder (ZAN-BPD) which provides a score for BPD severity. There was a significant negative correlation between glucose

Adult familial dyslexia: a retrospective developmental and psychosocial profile.

This study investigated the developmental, demographic, educational, and psychosocial outcome of 36 adults with third-generation familial dyslexia. Control subjects were 44 unaffected age-matched family members. Compared with control subjects, those with familial dyslexia 1) had similar incidences of perinatal complications, left-handedness, and right-left confusion but reported more early speech/language problems; 2) performed worse in reading and spelling but had similar educational achievement; 3) were more likely to report depression/anxiety symptoms and to have attention-deficit disorder

Nonmotor Symptoms and Cognitive Decline in de novo Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite its clinical importance, the development of dementia is still difficult to predict. In this study, we investigated the possible associations between non-motor symptoms and the risk of developing dementia within a 2-year observation period in PD. METHODS: A total of 80 patients with PD participated in this study. Nonmotor symptoms (the Nonmotor Symptoms Questionnaire), PD status (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale), depression (Geriatric d Depression Scale or Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale), stereopsis

Determinants of quality of life in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The objective of this study is to assess the association between tic severity, attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and quality of life (QOL) in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). GTS is a multidimensional disorder with disturbances in motor function and behavior. However, little is known about what variables are associated with QOL in these patients. We evaluated 56 outpatients with a diagnosis of GTS. The mean age was 10 (range 5-17 years). Tics were assessed with the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). Behavioral scales included the Leyton Obsessio

Self-management of unpleasant auditory hallucinations: a tested practice model.

Individuals who experience auditory hallucinations (AH) frequently report hearing unpleasant voices saying disturbing things to them, making derogatory remarks about them, or commanding them to do something, including harming themselves or someone else. The Self-Management of Unpleasant Auditory Hallucinations Practice Model was developed to help psychiatric-mental health nurses in both inpatient and outpatient settings implement evidence-based nursing care for voice hearers who are distressed by unpleasant voices. The model's utility extends to nursing education, administration, and research.

How related are hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania) and skin picking disorder? A review of evidence for comorbidity, similarities and shared etiology.

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) and skin picking disorder (SPD) are relatively common and potentially severe psychiatric conditions that have received limited empirical attention. Researchers are increasingly recognizing the similarities and co-occurrence of HPD and SPD, and several authors have suggested that the two disorders should be categorized together in the DSM-5. In the present article, we critically examined the evidence for comorbidity of HPD and SPD, and reviewed a diverse literature pertaining to shared risk factors and similarities in clinical characteristics. Self-help for bulimia nervosa: a preliminary report.

Eighteen patients with DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa were treated by providing them with supervision in the use of a self-help manual based on the cognitive behavioral treatment for the disorder. The patients were assessed before beginning the self-help program, and again 4 to 6 months later, using standardized measures of psychopathology. The findings were encouraging. At follow-up one half of the patients had ceased bulimic episodes and self-induced vomiting, and most of the remainder had made significant improvements. These preliminary findings, together with related published work, suggest tha

Specificities of auditory behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Auditory behavior reflects an individual's response to environmental sounds. Atypical responses to auditory input may indicate developmental difficulties, particularly in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study aimed to identify auditory behavior in children with ASD in relation to autism severity, age, treatment onset, and history of ear disease. The sample included 30 children with ASD (21 female and 9 male), classified into three groups according to ASD severity: mild (n = 3), moderate (n = 4), and severe (n = 23). Auditory behavior was assessed using the Questionnaire on A

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Correlations of self-directed violence in acute schizophrenics with clinical ratings and personality measures.

Schizophrenic patients admitted to an acute inpatient unit were evaluated with the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale (CPRS), items reflecting hostility from the same scale, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and the Socialization and Self-Control scales of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). Incidents of violent and nonviolent suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation before admission, and assaultiveness against self subsequent to admission were recorded. It was determined that behavioral ratings of degree of schizophrenic symptoms on the CPRS are more highly like

Reduced lateral orbitofrontal cortex volume and suicide behavior in youth with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Structural abnormalities in cortical and subcortical regions, including the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), are altered during brain development in adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD), which may increase risk for suicide. Few studies have examined the neural substrates of suicidal behavior in BD youth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between suicide behavior and the OFC in youth with BD. METHODS: Thirty-seven participants with BD and 26 non-psychiatric controls, ages 13-21 years, completed a diagnostic interview and mood rating scales. Lifetime symp
