The Relationship Between Violence Syndemics and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among African American Adolescents: Implications for Future Research.

PURPOSE: We present a conceptual framework based on a review of the literature to highlight the interconnecting and reinforcing elements of a violence syndemic and how this syndemic influences sexual risk behaviors among African American heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: We review existing peer-reviewed published research from 2000 to 2020 that links a violence syndemic (i.e., racism and race-related stress, neighborhood and police violence, peer violence, and family violence and disruptions) to adolescent sexual risk behaviors. Empirical findings and theoretical underpinnings are used to do

Extraction Behavior of Acidic Phosphorus-Containing Compounds to Some Metal Ions: A Combination Research of Experimental and Theoretical Investigations.

To provide feasible methods for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores, the extraction behavior of some representative acidic phosphorus-containing compounds (APCCs) as extractants is evaluated from the perspective of experimental and theoretical investigations in this work. Aqueous solutions containing five metal ions, Ca(II), Co(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II), were made to simulate leaching liquids, and the extraction of these metals was investigated. A simplified calculated model was used to evaluate the interaction between each extractant and meta

Wearable Biosensors in Youth With Autism With High Behavioral Acuity: Supportive Practices, Acceptability, and the Importance of Nonverbal Signs of Assent to Research Participation.

Wearable biosensors can provide insight into the internal states of individuals with autism with communication challenges; however, sensory sensitivities may make wearable biosensors uncomfortable. We describe our approach for introducing a wrist-worn biosensor (Empatica E4) to participants and using supportive techniques. Most participants (76.6%) were able to wear the biosensor for a duration of 15 minutes. The option to wear a colorful sweatband over the biosensor, verbal encouragement, and edible rewards were found to be helpful. Data collection was unsuccessful for the 23.4% of participan

Neuroprotective effects of dietary plants and phytochemicals against radiation-induced cognitive and behavioral deficits: a comprehensive review of evidence and prospects for future research.

Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is a common occurrence in clinical practice and incidents involving nuclear detonation or nuclear reactor accidents. IR triggers cellular events that result in oxidative stress and damage to macromolecules, rendering it harmful. While the central nervous system (CNS) was once believed to be resistant to radiation, emerging evidence suggests that even small doses of IR can adversely impact the brain. Exposure to an unsafe dose of radiation can cause increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), neuronal apoptosis, reduced neurogenesis, impaired syn

Are dopaminergic genes involved in a predisposition to pathological aggression? Hypothesizing the importance of "super normal controls" in psychiatricgenetic research of complex behavioral disorders.

We hypothesize that pathological aggression, a complex behavioral disorder, in adolescents may in part involve polymorphisms of the dopaminergic system. While a number of neurotransmitter systems must be involved, due to polygenic inheritance, one major pathway should involve the dopaminergic system. Advances in our knowledge of the neurobiology of aggression and violence have given rise to rational pharmacological treatments for these behaviors. The main biological systems that are known to be involved are certain reward neurotransmitters including: serotonin, opioid peptides, gamma-aminobuty

Tungsten impurity behaviors from x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer on Korea superconducting tokamak advanced research (KSTAR).

Highly charged tungsten impurity behaviors measured from the x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) utilizing a double crystal assembly (DCA) for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) are studied. The XICS equipped with the DCA can provide multiple impurity lines depending on the electron temperature and discharge conditions since the measurable wavelength range is wide, from 3.9480-4.0250 Å from the first quartz (110) crystal to 3.6650-3.7350 Å from the second quartz (102) crystal. Therefore, XICS is used to investigate impurity identification within the measurable wa

A Research-Practice Partnership to Scale Positive Behavior Support: Data-Based Decision-Making to Inform the Assessment of Implementation Fidelity.

Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) can play a key role in the implementation and scale up of school-based preventive interventions and programs. An RPP, referred to as PBIS Maryland, has been collaborating on the implementation of Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) in Maryland public schools for over 20 years. A fidelity data system was created to track implementation statewide and inform scale-up. Over time, the partners adjusted the fidelity measurement approach to meet various priorities and emerging needs. The current study serves as a case example of ho

Resilience to stress and antibiotics, coupled with immunomodulatory behavior, uncovers Mycobacterium indicus pranii as a suitable surrogate model for tuberculosis research.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) exhibits remarkable adaptability and persistence within host micro-environments, making tuberculosis a persistent global health challenge. Finding safe and relevant model organisms to study M.tb pathobiology is essential for augmenting research in this field. Mycobacterium indicus pranii (MIP), a non-pathogenic mycobacterial species with known immunomodulatory properties and established safety in human applications, represents a promising yet underutilized research model. Within hosts, M.tb encounters diverse stress conditions including oxidative and nitrosati

Self-Identity, Beliefs, and Behavior Among Men Who Have Sex with Transgender Women: Implications for HIV Research and Interventions.

While transgender women have been identified as a global priority population for HIV prevention and treatment, little is known about the cisgender male partners of transgender women, including their sexual behavior and HIV prevalence. Previous research has suggested that these male partners have varied identities and sexual behavior, which make identifying and engaging them in research difficult. This paper describes interviews conducted with fifteen cisgender men who reported recent sexual activity with transgender women in Lima, Peru. The purpose of this research was to explore how these men

Roadmap collaborative research on structured magnetic elastomers and their material behavior-bridging from fundamental and materials science to educational science.

Magnetic elastomers, like magnetic fluids, consist of magnetizable particles in a carrier medium. In contrast to magnetic fluids, the carrier matrix is a soft elastic solid. Consequently, the particles are permanently held in place. Such positional fixation allows to use the structure of the spatial particle arrangement as a central degree of freedom to enhance the properties of the materials. Specifically, structural optimization can improve overall magnetostrictive and magnetorheological properties. Key questions concern the identification of optimized structures, their consequences on the o

Conceptualizing the Role of Parent and Child Emotion Regulation in the Treatment of Early-Onset Behavior Disorders: Theory, Research, and Future Directions.

Behavior disorders (BDs) are common and costly, making prevention and early-intervention a clinical and public health imperative. Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is the standard of care for early-onset (3-8 years old) BDs, yet effect sizes vary and wane with time suggesting the role of underlying factors accounting for variability in outcomes. The literature on emotion regulation (ER), which has been proposed as one such underlying factor, is reviewed here, including a brief overview of ER, theory and research linking ER, externalizing symptoms, and/or BDs, and still largely preliminary work
