Therapeutic effect of berberine on chronic atrophic gastritis based on plasma and urine metabolisms.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of berberine (BBR) on chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and its potential mechanism. The effects of BBR on gastric histopathology, serum biochemical indexes and inflammatory factors in CAG rats were assessed. Moreover, plasma and urine metabolomics based on ultra high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS) were used to identify potential metabolic markers and possible pathways of BBR in the treatment of CAG. The results showed that BBR could significantly improve the patho

Berberine Ameliorates Allodynia Induced by Chronic Constriction Injury of the Sciatic Nerve in Rats.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether berberine could ameliorate allodynia induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in rats. After inducement of CCI, significant increases in the number of paw lifts from a cold plate test (cold allodynia) and decreased paw withdrawal threshold in the von Frey hair stimulation test (mechanical allodynia) were observed. However, these cold and mechanical allodynia were markedly alleviated by berberine administration in a dose-dependent manner. Sciatic nerve myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde activities were also attenua

Questionable Evidence for Berberine in Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome: An Integrity-Based Reappraisal.

INTRODUCTION: Prior systematic reviews suggest that berberine may match or exceed the effects of metformin on metabolic and hormonal outcomes in polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS; previously referred to as polycystic ovary syndrome). This review aimed to assess the reported efficacy of berberine and act as an integrity-based reappraisal of available evidence in women with PMOS. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and prospectively registered. MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and CINAHL were searched from inception to October 2025.

Blue light-activated berberine-gentamicin combination breaks down biofilms in diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a significant global burden, associated with high morbidity and increased mortality. More than half of DFUs become infected by polymicrobial communities, in which Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus form resilient biofilms. Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) using blue light is promising, its efficacy against polymicrobial biofilms remains suboptimal in infected DFUs. This study evaluated, for the first time, the activity of a berberine-gentamicin (Ber-Gen) combination under blue light photoactivation against dual-species P. aerugi

Berberine Synergistically Enhances the Antibacterial Activity of Ampicillin against Ampicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Although S. epidermidis is a skin commensal bacterium, it is thought to be a causative pathogen of skin infections. Prolonged and extensive use of antibiotics for skin infections, including ampicillin (AMP), has contributed to the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the shaping of skin commensal S. epidermidis into opportunistic pathogens. This highlights the urgent necessity for alternative therapeutic strategies to enhance antimicrobial efficiency and minimize toxic effects on host cells. The present study investigated the potential of berberine (BBR), with specific att

Inositol and Berberine Synergistically Reprogram Endocrine and Ovarian Metabolism in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Although Myo-Inositol/D-Chiro-Inositol (Ins) and berberine (BBR) have each shown beneficial effects in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), their combined therapeutic potential has not been systematically evaluated. Here, we demonstrate that Ins/BBR exerts superior efficacy compared with single treatments by targeting multiple pathogenic pathways in PCOS. In a DHEA+HFD-induced mouse model, Ins/BBR restored systemic sex steroid balance, normalized LH/FSH ratio, and improved estrous cyclicity. It also reduced ovarian cysts and enhanced fertility, accompanied by partial normalization of steroidogeni

Berberine chloride hydrate impairs Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation via inhibiting sortase A activity.

Dental caries is a biofilm-associated chronic progressive disease, results from the dissolution of mineralized tooth tissue by acidic generated from bacterial sugar fermentation. S. mutans, a prominent pathogen of dental caries, is acknowledged for its role in cariogenic biofilm formation, utilizing Sortase A (SrtA) to catalyse surface proteins, thus promoting biofilm formation. In our previous studies, the inhibitory effect of the berberine chloride hydrate (BH) on S. mutans biofilms was confirmed. Here, we further investigate the influence of BH on S. mutans biofilm-induced bovine enamel car

Metformin and berberine synergistically improve NAFLD via the AMPK-SREBP1-FASN signaling pathway.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent metabolic condition linked to dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and persistent inflammation. Due to its complex pathogenesis, no approved pharmacological treatments currently exist. The research sought to explore the combined impact of metformin (Met) and berberine (BBR) on NAFLD, focusing on the AMPK–SREBP1–FASN pathway implicated in liver lipid regulation. The study design incorporated in both living organisms and laboratory conditions to examine how these interventions influenced NAFLD-associated metabolic abnormalities. The HFD-fed mi

Design, synthesis and anti-breast tumor activity of Berberine hydrogen sulfide donor derivatives.

In order to improve the antitumor activity of berberine, different hydrogen sulfide donors were synthesized by alkyl chain splicing berberine isoquinoline. The total of 33 new compounds were synthesized. It showed that ber-a5, ber-a8 and ber-b5 had strong inhibitory activity against MCF-7 and 4 T1 cells, and IC50 of ber-a8 was 0.75 ± 0.03 μmol/L in MCF-7. Ber-a5, ber-a8 and ber-b5 were found to have good interactions with serine/threonine kinase (AKT) proteins and acted on the depressed pocket on the surface below the AB chain junction. In the H2S release experiment, ber-a3 ∼ ber-a5, ber-b2 ∼

Screening of botanical drugs reveals the potential anti-human adenovirus activity of berberine.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a significant viral pathogen that causes severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs) in children and immunocompromised patients. Currently, no specific treatment options are available for HAdV infections. This study used a green fluorescence protein-based, high-throughput screening (HTS) assay on a botanical drug library containing 3697 botanical compounds to identify agents that could inhibit HAdV. Four compounds with anti-HAdV-C5 activity in the low-micromolar range were identified and inhibited other wild-type HAdVs known to cause SARIs. Among these compounds, 13-

Ornamental Barberry Twigs as an Underexploited Source of Berberine-Rich Extracts-Preliminary Research.

Berberine is a natural substance obtained from the roots of common barberry which, due to its strong pharmacological activity, is a commonly tested ingredient of dietary supplements. However, ornamental barberries, which are widely available, have not been considered as a source of berberine so far. The research aimed to check whether the ornamental barberry leaves and twigs could be used as an easily accessible raw material for obtaining natural berberine-rich extract with biological activity. Twigs and leaves of seven cultivars of ornamental barberry extracts were assessed for their polyphen

Role of Berberine Thermosensitive Hydrogel in Periodontitis via PI3K/AKT Pathway In Vitro.

Periodontitis is a long-term inflammatory illness and a leading contributor to tooth loss in humans. Due to the influence of the anatomic parameters of teeth, such as root bifurcation lesions and the depth of the periodontal pocket, basic periodontal treatment on its own often does not completely obliterate flora microorganisms. As a consequence, topical medication has become a significant supplement in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Berberine (BBR) has various pharmacological effects, such as hypoglycemic, antitumor, antiarrhythmic, anti-inflammatory, etc. The target of our project i
