The Disenfranchised Bereavement: How the Familistic Death Administration Excludes Gay Men in Contemporary China.

This article examines research on "disenfranchised bereavement" as a fundamental concept for understanding the bereavement experiences of gay men, drawing upon Zhu Zhe's account within the Chinese context. It is demonstrated that China's death administration system is familistic, designating family members from heterosexual marriages as the only legitimate agents, thereby denying same-sex partners the rights to manage after-death arrangements and inherit assets. This family-centered system conflicts with the reality of diverse intimate relationships today, exacerbating the suffering during ber

Family distress related to death rattle and agonal breathing: a nationwide post-bereavement survey.

CONTEXT: Death rattle and agonal breathing are distressing for most families. Healthcare providers often explain these signs as a part of the natural dying process. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to screen for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to death rattle and agonal breathing among bereaved families, and to explore factors associated with positive screening results. METHODS: A nationwide, cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire among bereaved families of patients who died of cancer at 140 palliative care units/inpatient hospices in Japan. Bereavement and type 1 diabetes in childhood: a register-based cohort study in Sweden.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The potential impact of childhood bereavement-a severe psychological stressor-on childhood type 1 diabetes development remains unclear. Here, we aimed to bridge this knowledge gap and assess whether bereavement characteristics influenced any impact. METHODS: We conducted a register-based cohort study encompassing 3,598,159 children born in Sweden between 1987 and 2020. Childhood bereavement was defined as the death of a biological mother, father or sibling. Diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in childhood (<18 years) was ascertained through the National Patient Register. We applied

Sex Differences in the Relationship Between Child Maltreatment, Recent Bereavement, and Average Heart Rate.

The study explores the sex differences in cardiovascular outcomes among bereaved individuals. In addition, the study differentiates the impact of child maltreatment and recent loss on the physical health of adult men and women. This study conducted a secondary analysis of data drawn from the Biomarker Subproject of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (n = 1,255). Analysis included a series of regression models estimated in Stata version 15.1. A main effect for both sex and loss was observed. Both male and female respondents with loss had higher average heart rates a

Two Case Reports: Using Simulated Reattachment to Treat Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder and PTSD.

These case reports focus on a rapid treatment for persistent complex bereavement disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which appears to activate the mirror neuron network. Simulated reattachment is a technique which has been found to repair phantom limb pain in just a few sessions. The same neuroplasticity that accomplishes phantom pain relief has been found to occur in the treatment of complicated grief and PTSD using similar methods. The simulated reattachment for the client in Case one was found to significantly reduce the symptoms of both complicated grief and obsessive-compul

Living Disconnected: Building a Grounded Theory View of Bereavement for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities.

This grounded theory study gathered descriptions the bereavement experience for adults with intellectual disabilities (IDD) through the eyes and voices of a small sample of grief counselors. The counselors described bereaved adults with IDD as individuals who faced potentially heightened effects of the broken attachment bonds, increased risk of coping obstacles, long histories of unrecognized losses, and disenfranchised grief. The participants described bereaved adults with IDD (who sought treatment) as getting pushed to the sidelines to deal with their losses in isolation and confusion. It be

Viewing the body after bereavement due to suicide: a population-based survey in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Research on the assumed, positive and negative, psychological effects of viewing the body after a suicide loss is sparse. We hypothesized that suicide-bereaved parents that viewed their childs body in a formal setting seldom regretted the experience, and that viewing the body was associated with lower levels of psychological morbidity two to five years after the loss. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We identified 915 suicide-bereaved parents by linkage of nationwide population-based registries and collected data by a questionnaire. The outcome measures included the Patient Health Questionna

Bereavement-related depressive episodes: characteristics, 3-year course, and implications for the DSM-5.

CONTEXT: The DSM-IV criteria for major depressive episodes exclude brief episodes that are better accounted for by bereavement. However, a proposal has been made to remove this exclusion from the DSM-5. OBJECTIVES: To compare the demographic and psychiatric characteristics of participants with bereavement-related, single, brief (<2 months) depressive episodes and other types of depressive episodes and to compare the future risk of depression between these groups and participants without a history of depression at baseline. DESIGN: A longitudinal, community-based, epidemiologic study conducte

Effects of an educational bereavement program on health care professionals' perceptions of perinatal loss.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in health care professionals' perceptions of perinatal loss situations before and after an educational program on perinatal bereavement. METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was used in a pretest and posttest format. RESULTS: Scores were significantly higher (p = .000) on each of the posttest vignettes. Overall scores were lowest for the miscarriage pretest, whereas scores for the pretest vignettes for the stillbirth and neonatal loss were similar. A similar pattern occurred in the posttest vignette scores. CONCLUSION: Heal

Effects of AIDS-related bereavement on HIV progression among New York City gay men.

This study investigates the relationship between early AIDS-related bereavement and subsequent changes in CD4 T-cell levels and health over a three- to four-year follow-up period in 85 HIV positive gay men. In addition, two psychological responses to loss, grief, and depression were distinguished and used as predictors of changes in health following loss. Interview data collected each year was used to assess psychological, behavioral and health factors. Blood samples drawn yearly were used to assess CD4 T-cell levels. Results indicate that those who had experienced an AIDS-related bereavement

A meta-core outcome set for stillbirth prevention and bereavement care following stillbirth in LMIC.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Stillbirth is burdensome in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Currently, there are two core outcome sets (COS) for stillbirth (prevention and bereavement care), but these were developed with limited reflection of the needs of parents in an LMIC setting. To address this gap, the objective of this study was to establish consensus on the most important outcomes for stillbirth prevention and bereavement care following stillbirth in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. METHODS: Previous stillbirth outcomes were reviewed

Family Caregivers' Experiences with Dying and Bereavement of Individuals with Motor Neuron Disease in India.

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Ideal management plan in MND includes palliative care initiated from the time of diagnosis. At present, most of the neurodegenerative conditions are cared for at home. Neuropalliative care is an emerging concept in India and social workers are integral team members in this process. The primary aims of the study were to explore (a) the caregivers' experiences of the end-of-life stage, and (b) the sources of support for individuals and their caregivers with MND at the end-of-life stage. In-depth interviews were conducted with

Parents' Experiences of Suicide-Bereavement: A Qualitative Study at 6 and 12 Months after Loss.

The death of a child by suicide is a severe trauma, placing parents at greater risk of psychological morbidity and physical health problems compared to other causes of death. However, few studies have examined the aftermath and bereavement experience for parents following the death of a child to suicide, limiting the ability to guide effective postvention services through empirical research. The current study, which was part of a larger longitudinal investigation of suicide bereavement in Queensland, Australia, examined the individual experiences of both mothers and fathers bereaved by suicide

[The art of being when there is nothing you can do: caring for perinatal bereavement].

The period of mourning after perinatal loss is not synonym for depression. The article illustrates a way of caring for bereaved parents, which takes into account the temporality and individual nature of the bereavement process. The use of rituals and symbolic gestures allows for calling into existence the loss of a human being, who is gone without leaving many reminders. Psychotherapeutic care by the liaison-psychiatric service is part of the multidisciplinary care program proposed by the maternity of the University Hospitals of Geneva. These encounters offer parents the possibility to continu

Preparedness for death and adjustment to bereavement among caregivers of recently placed nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: Preparedness for death as a predictor of post-bereavement adjustment has not been studied prospectively. Little is known about pre-death factors associated with feeling prepared prior to the death of a loved one. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to prospectively assess the role of preparedness for death as a predictor of post-bereavement adjustment in informal caregivers (CGs) who experienced the death of their loved one and to identify predictors and correlates of complicated grief, depression, and preparedness for death among informal CGs. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, longitudina

Mediating processes in bereavement: the role of rumination, threatening grief interpretations, and deliberate grief avoidance.

Limited research so far has examined coping processes that mediate between risk factors and bereavement outcome. Knowledge of these pathways is important, since it helps establish why some bereaved persons are more vulnerable than others and suggests possibilities for intervention. In this international longitudinal study, three potentially critical mediators, namely rumination, threatening grief interpretations and deliberate grief avoidance, were examined in relationship to previously established risk factors (e.g., expectedness of the death, attachment style) and four major outcome variable
