OBJECTIVE: There are high rates of recurrence after definitive surgery in biliary tract cancer patients. We reviewed the use and effectiveness of adjuvant therapy (AT; chemotherapy±radiotherapy) in a single institution series.
METHODS: Characteristics, treatment details, and follow-up data of all patients with biliary tract cancer who had definitive surgery from January 1987 to September 2011 were reviewed. The association between baseline variables and disease-free survival/overall survival (OS) were tested using Cox proportional hazard analysis in the univariable and multivariable settings.

The aim of the study was the macromorphological analysis of extrahepatic biliary tract in chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger Molina). Bile ducts, the gall bladder and portal vein were injected with coloured latex. Using the technique of dissection, bile ducts were isolated from the liver lobes. Acute symptomatic biliary tract disease in the elderly is usually associated with a tenfold increase in operative morbidity and mortality when compared to the disease in non-elderly patients. Fifty-three patients with biliary symptoms were studied at least four years after cholecystectomy by isotope techniques. There was a highly significant correlation between symptoms and disturbances of bile flow, such as dyskinesia or obstruction. Gallbladder and extrahepatic bile duct operations merit special consideration in cirrhotic patients. During the past 15 years at Strong Memorial Hospital, 33 cirrhotic patients have undergone cholecystectomy or an operation for bile duct obstruction.
