Acute effects of binge drinking following aerobic exercise on autonomic and hemodynamic recovery in young men: a randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Impaired autonomic and hemodynamic recovery after acute aerobic exercise is linked to greater susceptibility to sudden cardiovascular events. Binge drinking can increase cardiovascular risk, partly through elevations in heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic activity, yet alcohol is commonly consumed after exercise. We tested whether binge drinking after acute aerobic exercise delays autonomic and hemodynamic recovery in young men. METHODS: In a randomized crossover design, 14 young men (mean age 25 years; body mass index 25.1 kg/m2) completed a 30-min treadmill run at 55-60% of

Ethanol Self-Administration Reduces mGlu2/3 Protein Expression Specifically in the Nucleus Accumbens and mGlu2/3 Activation Suppresses Binge Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is associated with dysregulated glutamatergic signaling within mesocorticolimbic circuits that govern reinforcement and excessive ethanol intake. Group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu2/3) act primarily as presynaptic autoreceptors that regulate glutamate release. However, how voluntary alcohol intake alters mGlu2/3 expression within reward circuitry remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effects of operant alcohol self-administration on mGlu2/3 protein expression and assessed the functional impact of group II receptor modulation on bin

Comparative analysis of alcohol consumption patterns and binge drinking behaviours among working populations: implications for occupational health and workplace safety.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and binge drinking (BD) are major public health concerns with clear implications for occupational health and workplace safety, particularly in physically demanding or safety-sensitive jobs. However, differences in alcohol-related risk across occupational groups remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed medical records from 1264 workers who underwent routine occupational health surveillance in Palermo, Italy, between 2023 and 2025. Participants were classified as white-collar workers (Work 1; n = 607) or blue-collar

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Ethnic Identity in Asian Americans: Associations with Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety, and Binge Drinking.

Asian Americans experience high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) but are significantly underrepresented in ACEs research. Despite evidence indicating that ACEs contribute to increased psychological distress and substance use among minoritized emerging adults and that a strong sense of ethnic identity can mitigate these impacts, no study has exclusively examined these relationships among Asian Americans. This study investigated how (1) ACEs relate to symptoms of posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and binge drinking; and explored (2) the strength of ethnic identity as a mode

Sex chromosome and gonadal hormone contributions to binge-like and aversion-resistant ethanol drinking behaviors in Four Core Genotypes mice.

INTRODUCTION: While substantial research has focused on the contribution of sex hormones to driving elevated levels of alcohol drinking in female rodents, fewer studies have investigated how genetic influences may underlie sex differences in this behavior. METHODS: We used the Four Core Genotypes (FCG) mouse model to explore the contribution of sex chromosome complement (XX/XY) and gonad type [ovaries (Sry-)/testes (Sry+)] to ethanol (EtOH) consumption and quinine-resistant drinking across two voluntary self-administration tasks: limited access consumption in the home cage and an operant resp

Lateral hypothalamus-projecting noradrenergic locus coeruleus pathway modulates binge-like ethanol drinking in male and female TH-ires-cre mice.

A growing body of literature implicates noradrenergic (NE) signaling in the modulation of ethanol consumption. However, relatively few studies have detailed specific brain pathways that mediate NE-associated binge-like ethanol consumption. To begin to fill this gap in the literature, male and female C57BL6/J and TH-ires-cre mice underwent pharmacological and chemogenetic testing, respectively, in combination with "drinking in the dark" procedures to model binge-like consumption of ethanol or sucrose solutions. First, we showed that intraperitoneal administration of the NE reuptake inhibitor, r

The Relationship between Binge Drinking and Metabolic Syndrome Components amongst Young Adults Aged 21 to 31 Years: Ellisras Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is lacking on the effects of binge alcohol consumption on metabolic syndrome in the rural South African population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between binge drinking and components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) amongst Ellisras rural young adults aged 21 to 31 years who are part of the Ellisras Longitudinal Study. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis was applied to a total of 624 participants (306 males and 318 females) aged 21 to 31 years who took part in the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS). The model was adjusted for covariates, inclu

Therapeutic Benefits of Spleen Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Administration on Binge Drinking-Induced Alcoholic Liver Injury, Steatosis, and Inflammation in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is increasingly recognized as an important cause of liver disease with limited therapeutic options for patients. Binge alcohol use, similar to chronic alcohol consumption, induces numerous deregulated signaling events that drive liver damage, steatosis, and inflammation. In this article, we evaluated the role of spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK), which modulates numerous signaling events previously identified linked in the development alcohol-induced liver pathology. METHODS: A 3-day alcohol binge was administered to C57BL/6 female mice, and features of alcoholic liver d

Alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and early coronary calcification: findings from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

It is unclear to what extent the apparently beneficial cardiovascular effects of moderate alcohol consumption are mediated by protection against atherosclerosis. Alcohol consumption, coronary heart disease risk factors, and coronary calcification (a marker of atherosclerosis) were measured during 15 years of follow-up in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study (1985-2001). Among 3,037 participants aged 33-45 years after follow-up (55% women, 45% Black), the prevalence of coronary calcification was 8% for consumption of 0 drinks/week (n = 1,435), 9% for 1-6 drinks/we

Assessing the impact of binge drinking and a prebiotic intervention on the gut-brain axis in young adults: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence and youth are periods of significant maturational changes, which seem to involve greater susceptibility to disruptive events in the brain, such as binge drinking (BD). This pattern-characterised by repeated episodes of alcohol intoxication-is of particular concern, as it has been associated with significant alterations in the developing brain. Recent evidence indicates that alcohol may also induce changes in gut microbiota composition and that such disturbances can lead to impairments in both brain function and behaviour. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting that mi

A systematic review and meta-analysis of animal models of binge eating - Part 1: Definitions and food/drink intake outcomes.

Binge eating involves consuming excessive amounts of food within a discrete period of time and is associated with significant impairments in binge-eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. While research on clinical binge eating has provided valuable aetiological insights, animal models allow for closer examination of environmental, biological, and developmental risk factors. Numerous animal models of binge eating exist and differ widely in operational definitions of bingeing, animal characteristics and methodological parameters. The current review aimed to synthesise the available published eviden

Relationship Dynamics in the Context of Binge Drinking and Polydrug Use Among Same-Sex Male Couples in Atlanta, Boston, and Chicago.

An estimated one- to two-thirds of incident HIV infections among U.S. men who have sex with men (MSM) occur within the context of a primary relationship. The existing, yet limited, literature on sexual risk behavior among same-sex couples suggests that MSM with main partners are more often to report having lower perceived HIV risk, higher unrecognized HIV infection, and increased frequency of condomless anal intercourse with their primary partner. Furthermore, numerous studies document the strong relationship between polydrug use and binge drinking with HIV infection among MSM. However, more r

Maternal alcohol binge-drinking in the first trimester and the risk of orofacial clefts in offspring: a large population-based pooling study.

Using individual participant data from six population-based case-control studies, we conducted pooled analyses to examine maternal alcohol consumption and the risk of clefts among >4600 infants with cleft lip only, cleft lip with cleft palate, or cleft palate only and >10,000 unaffected controls. We examined two first-trimester alcohol measures: average number of drinks/sitting and maximum number of drinks/sitting, with five studies contributing to each analysis. Study-specific odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using logistic regression and pooled to generate adjusted summary ORs. Across studie

Understanding the relationship between stress and trauma coping in relation to binge drinking among young adults experiencing homelessness: a path analysis.

Background: Young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) are especially vulnerable to binge drinking. YAEH experience traumatic experiences and ongoing stressors at higher rates than the general population. Objective: This study aimed to explore whether YAEH's active (e.g. problem-solving) and avoidant (e.g. avoid the stressor) coping strategies serve as an intervening mechanism through which traumatic experiences and perceived stress associate with their binge drinking risks. Understanding this will provide critical insights for future interventions.Method: This study is a secondary analysis
