Untargeted Metabolomics Profiling of Bioactive Compounds under Varying Digestate Storage Conditions: Assessment of Antioxidant and Antifungal Activity.

The rapid development of biogas plants in China has generated large quantities of digestate. The disparity between the continuity of biogas plant operation and the seasonality of digestate utilization has led to the need to store digestate. Therefore, untargeted profiling of bioactive compounds in the digestate stored under aerobic and anaerobic conditions was performed. The antioxidant and antifungal activity of digestate stored under varying conditions was likewise assessed. The results delineated that digestate storage under varying conditions brought about the degradation of organic acids,

The challenges and perspectives for anaerobic digestion of animal waste and fertilizer application of the digestate.

The increase in livestock production creates a serious problem of managing animal waste and by-products. Among the wide range of waste valorization methods available, anaerobic digestion is very promising. It is a form of material recycling that also produces renewable energy in the form of biogas, which is reminiscent of energy recycling. The effluent and digestate from the anaerobic digestion process need to be processed further. These materials are widely used in agriculture due to their composition. Both the liquid and solid fractions of digestate are high in nitrogen, making them a valuab

Co-Hydrothermal Liquefaction of algal and lignocellulosic biomass: Status and perspectives.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) effectively converts biomass to biofuels, thereby limiting the endless reliance on petroleum products derived from fossil fuels. However, the conversion is based on individual feedstock in the HTL process. In order to, further boost the conversion, HTL can be done by blending various feedstock, mainly algal and lignocellulosic biomass. Bibliometric analysis was carried out, and it was observed that there have been very few studies on Co-Hydrothermal Liquefaction (Co-HTL). There still exist several crucial gaps in process optimization when co-reactants are used d

Effects of reaction conditions on products and elements distribution via hydrothermal liquefaction of duckweed for wastewater treatment.

Wastewater treatment by duckweed is a naturally sustainable technology. However, its development is limited due to the lack of a follow-up treatment of duckweed. The duckweed was proposed for the treatment of rural domestic wastewater and agricultural wastewater, and it was further processed to produce bio-oil via hydrothermal liquefaction at various temperatures (250 °C-370 °C) and residence times (15-60 min). The highest bio-oil yield of 35.6 wt% was obtained at 370 °C, 45 min. The higher heating value of bio-oil was 40.85 MJ/kg, and the H/C ratio (1.72-1.98) was similar to that of petroleum

Anoxic biogas biodesulfurization promoting elemental sulfur production in a Continuous Stirred Tank Bioreactor.

Biological desulfurization of biogas has been extensively studied using biotrickling filters (BTFs). However, the accumulation of elemental sulfur (S°) on the packing material limits the use of this technology. To overcome this issue, the use of a continuous stirred tank bioreactor (CSTBR) under anoxic conditions for biogas desulfurization and S° production is proposed in the present study. The effect of the main parameters (stirring speed, N/S molar ratio, hydraulic residence time (HRT) and gas residence time (GRT)) on the bioreactor performance was studied. Under an inlet load (IL) of 100 g

Charcoal from anaerobically digested dairy fiber for removal of hydrogen sulfide within biogas.

Anaerobically digested fibrous solid (AD fiber) is an abundant material that offers potential to produce value-added products such as biochar. The objective of this paper is to better understand how thermochemical processing conditions affect the capacity of biochars derived from AD fiber to adsorb H2S from biogas. AD fiber was pyrolyzed in an electric tube reactor at temperatures up to 600 °C and 60 min. The chars were employed for H2S scrubbing tests from a synthetic biogas. Results showed that the chars' capacity for H2S removal is comparable to that of activated carbon. An additional step

Effect of temperature, water loading, and Ru/C catalyst on water-insoluble and water-soluble biocrude fractions from hydrothermal liquefaction of algae.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) converts algal biomass into a crude bio-oil (biocrude) and aqueous-phase products. The effect of temperature, water loading, and added H2 and/or Ru/C catalyst on the properties of the biocrude that spontaneously separates from the aqueous phase post reaction and also the biocrude that is extractable from the aqueous phase by dichloromethane is explored herein. This report is the first to elucidate how the yields, compositions, heating values, and energy recoveries of the two biocrudes vary with the processing conditions above. Effects of methanol on lipases: molecular, kinetic and process issues in the production of biodiesel.

The biotechnological production of biodiesel is based on transesterification/esterification reactions between a source of fatty acids and a short-chain alcohol, usually methanol, catalysed by enzymes belonging to the class known as lipases. Several lipases used in industrial processes, although stable in the presence of other organic solvents, are inactivated by methanol at or below the concentration optimal for biodiesel production, making it necessary to use stepwise methanol feeding or pre-treatment of the enzyme. In this review article we focus on what is currently know about methanol inac

A review on biohydrogen production through dark fermentation via the lactate pathway.

Biohydrogen production via dark fermentation is traditionally limited by lactate accumulation, which is often regarded as an inhibitory metabolic sink. This review reframes the role of lactate and lactic acid bacteria by analyzing the transition from process inhibition to strategic utilization through lactate-driven dark fermentation. By evaluating metabolic pathways and microbial cross-feeding dynamics, the work demonstrates how lactate acts as a high-energy intermediate that can be reassimilated by hydrogen-producing bacteria to enhance yields. The pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase-based pa

Enhancing the production of waste chicken fat biodiesel with ethanol improved engine properties.

The study uses co-solvent-based transesterification to turn chicken dung into biodiesel. Dry rendering was used to create chicken waste from lost fleshing and processing wastes, with a maximum fat percentage estimated to be 10% overall. The rendered chicken dung was then converted to biodiesel by employing potassium hydroxide as a base catalyst, methanol as the primary solvent, and ethanol as a co-solvent. Reaction parameters that were separately adjusted for methanol- and ethanol-based transesterification were used to identify the ideal range for the parameters. Along with production optimiza

Biodiesel stands out as the most favorable alternatives to fossil-derived diesel, offering a multitude of environmental benefits. At various stages of biodiesel production, the separation processes necessitate thermodynamic models with the capability to correlate and predict phase equilibria of mixtures. In this study, application of the classical differential evolution (DE) and its new enhanced version, the OPDE algorithm, for modeling vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) associated with components related to biodiesel production is presented. The algorithms were analysed and contrasted in terms of
