From compliance to moduli: clarifying basic mechanical properties of biological tissues.

In physiology education, terms such as compliance, distensibility, capacitance, elastance, elasticity, etc. refer to the mechanical properties of biological tissues but are often a source of confusion in teaching and learning. This article identifies three main causes underlying the confusion: 1) inconsistent interpretations of mathematically defined terms, 2) a gap between physiologic and material science terminology, and 3) a lack of illustration of the interrelationships among these terms. To address these problems, we divide these terms into three groups: terms measuring how easily a struc

Novel approaches to evaluate characteristics that affect military load carriage.

Carrying heavy body-borne loads, an essential component of a service member's duties, is a significant injury risk factor. Physiological and biomechanical data can help illuminate the relationship between load carriage and injuries for service members. This review highlights characteristics that affect load carriage performance and summarises novel approaches to evaluate associated biomechanical changes. Personal characteristics, such as physical fitness and body composition, are good predictors of injury risk and load carriage ability. Effective training programmes can improve load carriage a

A 50-year perspective on the use and potential of artiodactyl calcanei in bone adaptation studies.

Sheep and deer calcanei are important models for studying cortical (compact) and trabecular (cancellous) bone adaptation because they are amenable to direct strain measurement (due to lack of surrounding muscles), experience relatively simple/unidirectional bending, exhibit osteon remodelling, and have the most pronounced regional variations in mineralization and other histological characteristics reported in any bone. This simple loading environment is characterized by bending that produces prevalent/predominant tension on the plantar side and predominant compression on the dorsal side of the

Neural control meets biomechanics in the motor assessment of neurological disorders: a narrative review.

The emerging concept of "neurobiomechanics" embodies an integrative approach, bringing together insights from functional anatomy, the physiology of the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems, physics, and computer science. By examining human movement under normal, optimal, and pathological conditions, neurobiomechanics aims to unravel the intricate mechanisms driving motor function and dysfunction, offering a comprehensive perspective on disorders such as acquired brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. In this narrative review, we sought to explore the "neurobiomechanics" as a poten

A Variable Stiffness System for Impact Analysis in Collaborative Robotics Applications with FPGA-Based Force and Pressure Data Acquisition.

The integration of robots into collaborative environments, where they physically interact with humans, requires systems capable of ensuring both safety and performance. This work introduces the development of a Variable Stiffness Impact Testing Device (VSITD), designed to emulate physical human-robot interaction by replicating biomechanical properties such as muscle elasticity and joint compliance. The proposed system integrates a Variable Stiffness Mechanism (VSM) with a multi-sensor configuration that includes a high-resolution Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR) matrix, piezoelectric load cells

[MUSCLES MAY MOVE NOT ONLY TO THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION BUT ALSO TO THE LATERAL DIRECTION ----- A NEW PRINCIPLE DEVELOPED FROM THE OPENING ACTIVITY OF THE URETHRA ----].

(Purpose) Muscles shrink and stretch in the longitudinal direction along the running axis of muscle fibers. The "bi-metal", a widely utilized industrial instrument, is a device composing two metal plates pasted together. Since the coefficient of thermal expansion of the two metal plates differ from one another, the device bends in the lateral direction by heating. In the case of muscles, it may be possible to bend in the lateral direction, if the adjoining neighbor contracting units within them are adequately pasted together and contract to slightly different extents. We named this presumed mo

Deformation, mechanical breakdown, and flow of soft solid foods in the stomach.

Mechanical changes to solid foods in the stomach are crucial aspects of processes for regulating nutrient bioavailability, satiety, and glycaemic response after a meal. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study uses a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model to study the deformation and mechanical breakdown of solid beads in a liquid medium within a realistic three-dimensional representation of the stomach geometry. The model incorporates peristaltic contraction waves, including Terminal Antral Contractions (TACs), which are high-amplitude and high-speed travellin

The elephant backbone: Morphological differences, dorsostability, and vertebral fusions.

The vertebral column of elephants has several unique features that distinguish them from all other modern-day mammals. In this study, we examine various aspects of the functional morphology and intervertebral mobility of the elephant backbone, comparing it to that of other large herbivorous mammals, as well as to extinct Mammuthus primigenius, M. trogontherii, and Mammut americanum. The elephant vertebral column is characterized by a high degree of dorsostability. All three directions of intervertebral mobility (sagittal and lateral bending, and axial rotation), in all backbone modules, demons

The NACOB multi-surface walking dataset.

Walking is a fundamental aspect of human movement, and understanding how irregular surfaces impact gait is crucial. Existing gait research often relies on laboratory settings with ideal surfaces, limiting the applicability of findings to real-world scenarios. While some irregular surface datasets exist, they are often small or lack biomechanical gait data. In this paper, we introduce a new irregular surface dataset with 134 participants walking on surfaces of varying irregularity, equipped with inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors on the trunk and lower right limb (foot, shank, and thigh).

Biomechanics of parasite migration within hosts.

The dissemination of protozoan and metazoan parasites through host tissues is hindered by cellular barriers, dense extracellular matrices, and fluid forces in the bloodstream. To overcome these diverse biophysical impediments, parasites implement versatile migratory strategies. Parasite-exerted mechanical forces and upregulation of the host's cellular contractile machinery are the motors for these strategies, and these are comparably better characterized for protozoa than for helminths. Using the examples of the protozoans, Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium, and the metazoan, Schistosoma manson

An approximate solution of the SLIP model under the regime of linear angular dynamics during stance and the stability of symmetric periodic running gaits.

Terrestrial locomotion is a complex phenomenon that is often linked to the survival of an individual and of an animal species. Mathematical models seek to express in quantitative terms how animals move, but this is challenging because the ways in which the nervous and musculoskeletal systems interact to produce body movement is not completely understood. Models with many variables tend to lack biological interpretability and describe the motion of an animal with too many independent degrees of freedom. Instead, reductionist models aim to describe the essential features of a gait with the small

Biomechanical and histological evaluation of a prototype bovine pericardial patch for veterinary abdominal surgery: An approximation study.

In veterinary medicine, especially within large animal medical and surgical clinics, addressing cavitary defects is a primary concern. In bovines, umbilical hernias are the most common defect, and surgical repair often necessitates the use of prosthetic materials. However, there is a high rate of recurrence with sutures or synthetic meshes, largely due to tissue contamination. The development of biological patches for such repairs is still in its early stages in veterinary medicine, with no commercially tested prototypes available in Argentina. Tissues derived from the extracellular matrix are

Protocol to record and analyze primate leaping in three dimensions in the wild.

Several studies comparing primate locomotion under lab versus field conditions have shown the importance of implementing both types of studies, as each has their advantages and disadvantages. However, three-dimensional (3D) motion capture of primates has been challenging under natural conditions. In this study, we provide a detailed protocol on how to collect 3D biomechanical data on primate leaping in their natural habitat that can be widely implemented. To record primate locomotion in the dense forest we use modified GoPro Hero Black cameras with zoom lenses that can easily be carried around

One-dimension statistical parametric mapping in lower limb biomechanical analysis: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanics significantly impacts sports performance and injury prevention. Traditional methods like discrete point analysis simplify continuous kinetic and kinematic data, while one-dimensional Statistical Parametric Mapping (spm1d) evaluates entire movement curves. Nevertheless, spm1d's application in sports and injury research is limited. As no systematic review exists, we conducted a scoping systematic review, synthesizing the current applications of spm1d across various populations, activities, and injuries. This review concludes by identifying gaps in the literature and sugg

Multi-Level Structural Enhancement Mechanism of the Excellent Mechanical Properties of Dung Beetle Leg Joint.

The multi-level structure is a strategy to enhance the mechanical properties of dung beetle leg joints. Under external loads, the microstructure facilitates energy dissipation and prevents crack extension. The macrostructure aids in transferring the load to more reliable parts. The connection established by the two hemispheres is present in the dung beetle leg joint. The micron-layered and nanoscale crystal structures further constitute the leg joint with excellent mechanical properties. The maximum compression fracture force is ≈101000 times the weight of the leg. Here, the structural design
