Platelet-rich plasma: a biomimetic approach to enhancement of surgical wound healing.

Platelets are small anucleate cytoplasmic cell bodies released by megakaryocytes in response to various physiologic triggers. Traditionally thought to be solely involved in the mechanisms of hemostasis, platelets have gained much attention due to their involvement wound healing, immunomodulation, and antiseptic properties. As the field of surgery continues to evolve so does the need for therapies to aid in treating the increasingly complex patients seen. With over 14 million obstetric, musculoskeletal, and urological and gastrointestinal surgeries performed annually, the healing of surgical wo

Magnetic Driving Flowerlike Soft Platform: Biomimetic Fabrication and External Regulation.

Nature-inspired actuators that can be driven by various stimuli are an emerging application in mobile microrobotics and microfluidics. In this study, a soft and multiple-environment-adaptive robotic platform with ferromagnetic particles impregnated in silicon-based polymer is adopted to fabricate microrobots for minimally invasive locomotion and control interaction with their environment. As an intelligent structure of platform, the change of its bending, deformation, and flapping displacement is rapid, reversible, and continuously controllable with sweeping and multicycle magnetic actuation.

Biomimetic Accommodating Intraocular Lens Using a Valved Deformable Liquid Balloon.

OBJECTIVE: Presbyopia is a common age-related condition that prevents people from focusing on near objects. The etiology of presbyopia continues to be debated, but the end effect of all postulated mechanisms is the lack of deformation of the human lens. Using our understanding of the biomechanical properties of the natural human lens, we created a unique accommodating intraocular lens. Although this lens can be used for lenticular disease such as myopia and hyperoperopia, this study addresses the needs of cataract patients with presbyopia. METHODS: The lens was implanted into presbyopic human

Electrospinning of biomimetic scaffolds for tissue-engineered vascular grafts: threading the path.

Tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) offer an alternative to synthetic grafts for the surgical treatment of atherosclerosis and congenital heart defects, and may improve graft patency and patient outcomes after implantation. Electrospinning is a versatile manufacturing process for the production of fibrous scaffolds. This review aims to investigate novel approaches undertaken to improve the design of electrospun scaffolds for TEVG development. The review describes how electrospinning can be adapted to produce aligned nanofibrous scaffolds used in vascular tissue engineering, while novel p

[Interfacial behaviour of glycoconjugated tetraphenylporphyrins and their interaction with biomimetic models of the cell membrane].

INTRODUCTION: Porphyrins are photosensitizers usable in photodynamic therapy. Although these molecules are clinically effective, their low water solubility and their lack of specificity are major drawbacks to their development. Our study was aimed at analysing the interfacial behaviour of glycoconjugated tetraphenylporphyrins newly synthesized at the Curie Institute, and their interaction with model membranes bearing a specific lectin mimicking a mannose membrane receptor in retinoblastoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The interfacial behaviour of the porphyrins was analysed by surface pressure meas

Biomimetic mineralization induced by fibrils of polymers derived from a bile acid.

A polymer containing bile acid pendant groups was prepared by free-radical polymerization of the 3alpha-methacrylate derivative of cholic acid. The polymer formed fibrils of about 1 nm in diameter in aqueous media and further assembled into bundles or lamella plates, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. After immersing the fibrils in simulated body fluid with ion concentrations equivalent to those in human plasma, plate-like crystals formed on the surface of the fibril assembly. The diffraction pattern corresponding to the (001) plane of hydroxyapatite was identified by transmissio

Electrospun chitosan-P(LLA-CL) nanofibers for biomimetic extracellular matrix.

Chitosan-poly(L-lactic acid-co-epsilon-caprolactone)(50:50) (P(LLA-CL)) (CS/P(LLA-CL)) blends were electrospun into nanofibers using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as solvents. Chitosan, which is difficult to electrospin into nanofibers, could be easily electrospun into nanofibers with addition of a small portion of P(LLA-CL). The fiber diameter depended on both the polymer concentration and the blend ratio of chitosan to P(LLA-CL). The average fiber diameter increased with increasing polymer concentration and decreasing the blend ratio of chitosan to P

A versatile route to functional biomimetic coatings: ionomers for honeycomb-like structures.

Highly ordered films were prepared by spreading out carbon disulfide (CS) solutions of ionomers over inorganic surfaces and for the first time over an organic surface. These ionomers, hydrophobic homopolymers or copolymers end-capped by a cationic group, were easily synthesized in a one-step reaction by a control radical process called nitroxide-mediated polymerization. Optical and electronic microscopy observations of the films lead to the definition of new criteria for the formation of such structures. Firstly, the effect of a solid support on the honeycomb structure regularity was studied.

Biomimetic nanofibrous scaffolds: preparation and characterization of PGA/chitin blend nanofibers.

Electrospinning of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA)/chitin blend solutions in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol was investigated to fabricate biodegradable and biomimetic nanostructured scaffolds for tissue engineering. The morphology of the electrospun PGA/chitin blend nanofibers was investigated with a field emission scanning electron microscope. The PGA/chitin blend fibers have average diameters of around 140 nm, and their diameters have a distribution in the range 50-350 nm. The miscibility of PGA/chitin blend fibers was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The PGA and chitin were immis

A biomimetic motility assay provides insight into the mechanism of actin-based motility.

Abiomimetic motility assay is used to analyze the mechanism of force production by site-directed polymerization of actin. Polystyrene microspheres, functionalized in a controlled fashion by the N-WASP protein, the ubiquitous activator of Arp2/3 complex, undergo actin-based propulsion in a medium that consists of five pure proteins. We have analyzed the dependence of velocity on N-WASP surface density, on the concentration of capping protein, and on external force. Movement was not slowed down by increasing the diameter of the beads (0.2 to 3 microm) nor by increasing the viscosity of the mediu

pH-responsive biomimetic liposomes enhance targeted immunotherapy of bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors of the urinary system, and its high incidence and mortality seriously threaten human health. Although emerging immunotherapies have achieved remarkable results in bladder cancer, they still face great challenges such as immune tolerance and low response rates in clinical practice. Therefore, to overcome immunotherapy resistance and low response rates, we designed and prepared a pH-responsive biomimetic liposome (LP) encapsulating the lymphocyte activation gene 3 protein (FGFR) inhibitor erdafitinib using the thin-film hydration metho

Emerging Strategies for Bioprinting Organized Musculoskeletal Tissues with Biomimetic Collagen Architecture.

Collagen fiber organization is critical to the biomechanical function of musculoskeletal tissues. This has motivated increased interest in tissue engineering strategies aiming to recapitulate native collagen architecture in order to generate more biomimetic grafts. In particular, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a powerful biofabrication platform capable of generating patient-specific constructs containing cells, supporting biomaterials, and diverse regulatory factors (e.g., genes, proteins, and small molecules). This paper will review how emerging bioprinting strategies can a

A Biomimetic Solvatochromic Chip With Optimized Chemical Diversity for On-Site Liquid Identification.

Colorimetric sensors for instant and on-the-spot identification of organic liquids have been actively developed across diverse fields such as chemical hazard inspection, manufacturing process monitoring, and beverage safety. Multi-target sensing scenarios often necessitate large-scale sensor arrays, which inevitably increase the fabrication complexity, complicate visual interpretation, and exacerbate data redundancy. Here, we present a biomimetic photonic-gustatory chip (BiPC) comprising a polyacrylate-based solvatochromic disk (PSD) array. The elastic photonic crystal PSDs generate distinct c

Who mimics nature? Disciplinary asymmetry in biomimetic and bioinspired research teams.

Biomimetics is generally viewed as inherently interdisciplinary, yet the disciplinary composition of biomimetic research teams has not been systematically quantified. We analysed 74 407 biomimetics-related publications from the past two decades and classified 436 010 author-paper affiliation records by biological or technical expertise to reconstruct team composition. Our analysis reveals an asymmetric disciplinary landscape: technical authors outnumber biological researchers by roughly two to one. Team organization is more balanced-while purely technical teams still represent the largest shar

Biomimetic hydrogel design strategies for vascular grafts and vascularized tissue constructs.

Biomimetic design strategies offer rational approaches for reconstructing functional vascular structures within hydrogel platforms. Hydrogels provide unique advantages through tissue-like hydration, tunable architectures, and biochemical functionalization capacity. These properties enable implementation of design principles derived from native vasculature. This review proposes an integrated analytical framework extracting design principles from native vascular architecture and demonstrating their application across two conventionally separate research directions, namely, vascular graft enginee

Atorvastatin-Driven Methuosis in Glioblastoma: A Biomimetic Nanodrug for Targeted Tumor Therapy.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly malignant brain tumor. The immunosuppressive microenvironment and resistance to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis pose significant challenges for treatment. In this study, we found that atorvastatin calcium (AC) can effectively induce methuosis in GBM cells, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic candidate for GBM treatment. To address the challenge of crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and enhance drug delivery efficiency, we synthesized AC nanoparticles stabilized through dopamine polymerization, achieving high drug-loading efficiency. Moreover, the nanopar
