Vector borne and zoonotic diseases (Larchmont, N.Y.)2018eng
Schistosomiasis is one of the major communicable diseases of public health and socioeconomic importance in the developing world. It is a waterborne disease in which Biomphalaria alexandrina snails are known to be the intermediate molluscan host for Schistosoma mansoni: the causative agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis. Therefore, snail control is one of the cornerstones of schistosomiasis control programs. Several methods have been used to eliminate snail hosts. One of these methods is chemical molluscicides, which have undesirable effect to nontarget organisms. Consequently, the search

Schistosomiasis remains a disease of major global public health concern since it is a chronic and debilitating illness. The widely distributed Schistosoma mansoni that causes intestinal schistosomiasis represents a great threat. Its world-wide distribution is permitted by the broad geographic range of the susceptible species of its intermediate host, Biomphalaria, which serves as an obligatory host for the larval stage, at which humans get infected. The objectives were to identify the proteins responsible for the snails’ compatibility outcome through differentiation between the total proteins

Gene mapping and the generation of linkage groups are fundamental to an understanding of the organization and relationships of genes and marker sequences, providing a framework with which to investigate their association with traits of interest. The abundance of techniques available for generating polymorphic molecular markers, and recent advances in high throughput screening, have allowed the extension of map analysis to the tropical freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata, an important intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni. Direct comparison of gene expression by differential display scre

Fibrinogen-related proteins (FREPs) and Down syndrome cell adhesion molecules (Dscams) are important immune-related molecules in invertebrates. Although they are found in different taxonomic groups and possess unique functions, both exhibit high diversity and adaptability. FREPs are characterized by their fibrinogen-related domains and have been primarily studied in mollusks, such as Biomphalaria glabrata. Through mechanisms of diversity generation, such as gene conversion and point mutations, BgFREP plays a critical role in the host's defense against parasites. Dscams are immunoglobulin-like

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been applied in epidemiological surveillance studies of insect vectors of parasitic diseases, such as the Dengue's mosquitoes. However, regarding mollusks, vectors of important worldwide helminth diseases such as schistosomiasis, fascioliasis and angiostrongyliasis, NIRS studies are rare. This work proposes to establish and standardize the procedure of data collection and analysis using NIRS applied to medical malacology, i.e., to mollusk vectors identifications. Biomphalaria shells and live snails were analyzed regarding several operational aspects, such

The wide eco-bio-social intervention generated by the SaoFrancisco River Integration Project (PISF) may contribute to the dispersion or introduction of schistosomiasis intermediate hosts in areas without prior recording. The objective was to characterize the limnic malacofauna and its distribution along watersheds involved in the PISF. A cross-sectional study based on the collection of mollusks from 33 water bodies, from Aurora, Brejo Santo, Jaguaretama, Jaguaribara, Jati e Mauriti municipalities in the Ceara (CE) State was developed. The conchological characteristics were used to identify sna

Schistosomiasis is a disease that affects tropical and subtropical areas and is considered the second most prevalent parasitic disease in the world. One of the ways of combating this disease is the use of molluscicidal agents to eliminate or reduce the population of intermediate host snails. Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) is a chemical biocide commonly used as a disinfectant and antiseptic in the food industry and very successfully for the disinfection of swimming pools. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) indicated the PHMB as low environmental risk. The present s

Discoveries made over the past ten years have provided evidence that invertebrate antiparasitic responses may be primed in a sustainable manner, leading to the failure of a secondary encounter with the same pathogen. This phenomenon called "immune priming" or "innate immune memory" was mainly phenomenological. The demonstration of this process remains to be obtained and the underlying mechanisms remain to be discovered and exhaustively tested with rigorous functional and molecular methods, to eliminate all alternative explanations. In order to achieve this ambitious aim, the present study focu

Malaria and schistosomiasis are the two most important parasitic diseases in the tropics and sub-tropics with geographic overlap. Efforts have been made for developing new schistosomicidal drugs, or testing existing drugs originally used for non-related diseases. The antimalarial artemisinin-naphthoquine phosphate combination (CO-ArNp) was recently reported to be a promising novel antischistosomal therapy with potent in vivo activity against Schistosoma mansoni. In this work, we report the in vitro dose- and time-response effect of CO-ArNp against the Egyptian strain of S. mansoni, and its sna

For a better comprehension of the parasite-host interaction, proteins expressed by the cardiac and pericardial tissues were compared between susceptible (Cabo Frio) and resistant (Taim) Biomphalaria tenagophila populations, challenged (c) and non-challenged (nc) with Schistosoma mansoni. Proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) and stained with Coomassie blue. A total of 146 and 135 spots were observed in Cabo Frio (CFnc) and in Taim (Tnc) non-challenged populations, respectively, whereas 153 spots were detected in both Cabo Frio (CFc) and Taim (Tc) challenged popul

Molluscicidal activity of the herebicides 2,4-D and Graminol, as well as both extracts and dry powder of the plant Azolla pinnata were evaluated against B. alexandrina snails. It was observed that 2,4-D proved to be the most toxic compound among he tested ones, showing LC90 of 52 ppm after 24 h of exposure. Ethanol extract of Azolla showed the highest molluscicidal activity against the tested snails compared with the other extracts and dry powder (LC90 = 3300 ppm). Ethanol extract at 6600 ppm after 3 h of exposure killed 100% and 19.4% of S. mansoni miracidia and cercariae, respectively. The m

Propylparaben (PP) is a widely used preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products, and its potential toxicity to non-target aquatic invertebrates remains a concern. This study used the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as a model organism to evaluate the toxic effects of PP through acute and chronic exposures at embryonic, newly hatched, and adult stages. Acute exposure experiments showed concentration-dependent mortality and developmental inhibition, with LC50 values of 36.69 mg/L (embryos, 168 h), 33.48 mg/L (newly hatched snails, 96 h), and 57.05 mg/L (adults, 72 h). Understanding the niches of intermediate hosts and vectors for environmentally transmitted pathogens is crucial for identifying endemic areas, assessing habitat suitability and targeting interventions. This study focuses on intermediate hosts of intestinal schistosomes, with over 700 million people at risk of lifelong infection. We compared habitat suitability and species interactions across 674 sites in 52 villages in rural Uganda between 2022 and 2024, capturing a severe flooding event. Spatiotemporal models incorporating a polygon-based method to account for space with time as a fixed effec

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria pfeifferi, a predominantly self-fertilizing freshwater snail, is the world's most important intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni, one of the causative agents of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease affecting millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. We sought to determine whether we could identify distinct and persistent lineages of B. pfeifferi within a natural stream habitat in western Kenya, indicative of their asexual descent. We also sought to determine whether infections by S. mansoni or other trematodes were associated with particular lineages.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is the world's second-most important parasitic disease affecting humans. Among the two main forms of the disease, intestinal schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni is predominant in Cameroon, where its intermediate host Biomphalaria spp. is widely distributed, particularly in the Adamawa plateau. As a prerequisite to targeted vector control for effective elimination of intestinal schistosomiasis infection, we mapped the geographical distribution of Biomphalaria snails in the Adamawa Region.

INTRODUCTION: The genus Biomphalaria in Brazil includes 11 species and one subspecies, three of which are intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Due to the recent evolution of this group, some species are difficult to identify based on morphological characters, making the use of genetic markers necessary for species identification. This study aimed to evaluate the use of partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase I (coi) gene for the identification of Biomphalaria species using phylogenetic reconstruction and species delimitation algorithms. The study tested the use of DNA barcoding tec

The molluscicidal action of essential oils have been attributed to the most prevalent terpene compounds. However, molluscicidal properties, mode of action, and toxicity to non-target organisms remain unclear. In this study, the molluscicidal potential of four monoterpenes (camphor, thymol, α-pinene, and 1,8-cineole) against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata, an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, was analyzed. The molluscicide activity of each monoterpene was assessed by the standardized test of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the monoterpenes considered active against B. glabrata

BACKGROUND: The snail Biomphalaria straminea is one of the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Biomphalaria straminea is also an invasive species, known for its strong capability on peripheral expansion, long-distance dispersal and colonization. Using molluscicides to control snail populations is an important strategy to interrupt schistosomiasis transmission and to prevent the spread of the invasive species. In this study, a series of pyridylphenylurea derivatives were synthesized as potential molluscicides. Their impact on adult snails and egg masses was evaluated. Acute toxicity to f
