Empty nose syndrome pathogenesis and cell-based biotechnology products as a new option for treatment.

Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a rare complication that develops after partial or complete turbinectomy. The main feature of ENS is paradoxical nasal obstruction feeling despite objectively wide nasal airway. ENS pathogenesis is multifactorial and includes changes in laminar physiological airflow, disruption of mucosa functions and deficient neural sensation. This leads to the development of ENS symptomatology such as dyspnea, nasal dryness, nasal burning, nasal obstruction, feeling of suffocation and even comorbid psychiatric disorders that significantly impairs life quality. Specific effective

Benefits and concerns associated with biotechnology-derived foods: can additional research reduce children health risks?

The development of techniques devised for the genetic manipulation of foods poses new risks for children with food allergy (FA). The introduction of foreign allergenic proteins from different foods into previously tolerated foods may trigger allergic reactions, often complicating with anaphylactic shock in a subset of allergic babies. Children with FA, even if subjected to preventative diets, always challenge the risk of developing allergic manifestations after unintentional intake of a non tolerated food in restaurant settings, with relatives or schoolmates, etc, where product labelling is ne

Refining Salinivibrio pangenome dynamics and biotechnological potential through comparative analysis.

Current understanding of genomic diversity within the halophilic genus Salinivibrio relies predominantly on draft genomes, with only seven complete genomes among the 62 publicly available. Previous pangenome analysis suggested a closed genomic structure while concluding that Salinivibrio lacks polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) degradation capacity despite possessing biosynthesis genes. Here, we present eight complete Salinivibrio genomes from Pearse Lakes (Rottnest Island, Western Australia) generated using Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing, alongside re-analysis of 38 high-quality public genomes

Exploring the biotechnological potential of terrestrial hot spring microbiomes for CO2 utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Terrestrial hot springs are extreme environments shaped by geothermal heat, geogenic gases and extremes of pH and temperatures. Their gas fluxes, which include CO2, CO, H2S and SO2, mirror the chemical composition of CO2-rich waste streams. Microbial communities inhabiting these environments are typically thermotolerant or thermophilic and sustained by CO2 fixation and chemolithotrophic metabolism. Such communities may therefore provide a natural starting point for developing ex-situ, consortium-based biotechnologies capable of operating under elevated temperatures and chemically h

Decoding microbial fructosyltransferases: Structural insights, molecular engineering, and biotechnological applications.

Fructosyltransferase (FTF), classified within glycoside hydrolase families GH32 and GH68 of the GH-J clan, plays an indispensable catalytic role in the biosynthesis of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and fructan polymers (such as inulin and levan). These enzymes specifically catalyze fructosyl transfer reactions, constructing structurally diverse carbohydrates through β-(2 → 1) or β-(2 → 6) glycosidic linkages: FOS (linear oligosaccharides with DP 2-10 and a terminal glucose) and fructan polymers (high-molecular-weight polysaccharides). The resulting products not only exhibit excellent physicoche

Genomic resources of Cold-adapted Mrakia yeasts and their potential biotechnological applications.

Mrakia is a cold-adapted yeast genus commonly found in polar environments, including the Antarctic and Arctic regions. Several Mrakia genome sequences have been reported to date; however, comprehensive genomic analyses remain limited. Further, there are no reports of complete mitochondrial genome sequences for the genus Mrakia. Therefore, we isolated two cold-adapted yeast strains, Mrakia gelida PAMC 26583 and Mrakia robertii PAMC 26600, from Arctic lichens. Phylogenetic analysis placed both strains within the order Cystofilobasidiales. High-quality whole-genome assemblies were generated using

Functional and biotechnological cues of potassium homeostasis for stress tolerance and plant development.

Potassium (K+) is indispensable for the regulation of a plethora of functions like plant metabolism, growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. K+ is associated with protein synthesis and entangled in the activation of scores of enzymes, stomatal regulation, and photosynthesis. It has multiple transporters and channels that assist in the uptake, efflux, transport within the cell as well as from soil to different tissues, and the grain filling sites. While it is implicated in ion homeostasis during salt stress, it acts as a modulator of stomatal movements during water deficit conditions
