Determinants of sexual risk-taking among young HIV-negative gay and bisexual men.

Data from a cohort of young HIV-negative gay and bisexual men were analyzed to identify determinants of sexual risk-taking at baseline. Gay/bisexual men aged between 18 and 30 completed a self-administered questionnaire including demographics, depression, social support, substance use, and consensual versus nonconsensual sex. Risk-takers were defined as those who had unprotected anal sex with casual male sex partners in the previous year; non-risk-takers were defined as those who reported consistent condom use during anal sex with all male partners in the previous year. Logistic regression was

Sexual risk for HIV transmission among gay/bisexual men in substance-abuse treatment.

A sample of San Francisco gay/bisexual men in substance-abuse treatment (N = 314) was compared to the San Francisco Men's Health Study (SFMHS) cohort to compare levels of sexual behaviors that are high-risk for HIV transmission. Quantitative data were supplemented by analysis of transcripts of focus group discussions with gay men in treatment at the same agency. Sexual risk for HIV infection was significantly higher for gay/bisexual men in substance-abuse treatment than among the community-based (SFMHS) sample of gay/bisexual men. Among those entering outpatient alcohol/drug treatment, 21% rep

Relationship between AIDS latency period and AIDS survival time in homosexual and bisexual men.

We identified 277 homosexual and bisexual men diagnosed with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) whose estimated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroconversion dates, ranging from 1977-85, could be well approximated. These men were from a cohort of 6,705 homosexual and bisexual men originally recruited for studies of sexually transmitted hepatitis B in San Francisco in 1978-80. We compared the time from HIV seroconversion to the initial disease diagnostic of AIDS (AIDS latency period) with the time from first AIDS diagnosis to death (AIDS survival time) and found no significant overa

Unilateral cytomegalovirus retinochoroiditis and bilateral cytoid bodies in a bisexual man with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A 42-year-old bisexual man with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, cryptococcal meningitis, disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare with mycobacteremia, and oropharyngeal candidiasis developed unilateral retinitis and bilateral cotton wool patches. Histopathologic examination revealed unilateral necrotizing retinochoroiditis with virions in retinal and choroidal tissues. Postmortem cultures of retina and choroid were positive for cytomegalovirus.

Heavy drinking antecedents among bisexual+ and heterosexual women with sexual assault histories: A qualitative inquiry.

INTRODUCTION: Bisexual+ women are at high risk for alcohol use and sexual assault; yet reasons for high alcohol use among bisexual+ women remain unclear. The study aimed to examine: (1) antecedents of heavy drinking (i.e., microaggressions, coping motives, psychological distress) that could vary across drinking events and (2) how experiences might differ between bisexual+ and heterosexual women. METHODS: Participants were 45 young adult bisexual+ (n = 24) and heterosexual (n = 21) women who reported heavy episodic drinking (4+ drinks in a sitting) at least four times in the last 30 days and a

Examining the Association Between Violence and PrEP Use Among Indigenous Gay and Bisexual Men in Guatemala.

Indigenous gay and bisexual men (GBM) in Guatemala face high rates of violence and HIV. This study seeks to understand the relationship between exposure to different forms of violence and PrEP use to inform PrEP programming in Guatemala. From June 2023- May 2024, two partner organizations administered a cross-sectional questionnaire to 395 Indigenous Guatemalan GBM. We examined the relationship between violence (physical, sexual, and police violence due to sexual orientation; forced migration and knowing someone missing, injured, or killed in the internal armed conflict; and intimate partner v

Bisexual releases are as effective as male-only releases to control Drosophila suzukii with the sterile insect technique.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) suppresses insect reproduction by repeatedly releasing sterile insects and allowing them to mate with insects of the same species in the wild. While the classical SIT relies on sterile males mating with wild females, there is a debate regarding the risks and benefits of releasing sterile females along with the sterile males (i.e. bisexual releases). In a replicated cage experiment, we compared the effect of unisexual and bisexual sterile releases of Drosophila suzukii on induced sterility. To ensure field-realism, fertile females - wild-F0 freshly

The Poetic Life Narratives of Midlife and Older Bisexual Adults: Struggle, Survival, and Healing in Three Acts.

Empirical discourses surrounding bisexuality often focus on challenges and disparities. This analysis identifies counternarratives of coping and survival among 21 midlife and older bisexual individuals. Findings are presented in three found poems followed by interpretations within participants' life experiences. Each poem depicts an "act" of life, separating narratives into three stages of meaning-making. Act I: The Struggle captures early-to midlife experiences fraught with confusion, isolation, mental health challenges, and interpersonal conflict. In Act II: Coping and Survival Looks Like…pa

Fun with Friends? Participation in the Gay Community Predicts Alcohol and Drug Consumption for Gay and Bisexual Men.

Gay and bisexual men report alcohol and drug (AOD) consumption at rates double that of the general population. While some research suggests this may be a result of minority stress, recent studies suggest the level of involvement these men have in the gay community may provide another explanation. Additionally, studies have found AOD consumption among gay and bisexual men may vary by age. This study aimed to understand the association between community participation (CP) and AOD consumption whilst understanding the role age has in this relationship. A cross-sectional online study was conducted

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer+ Patients' Preferences for Contraceptive Counseling and Experiences of Coercion in Contraceptive Care.

Although one in three U.S. contraceptive clients identify as something other than heterosexual, research has overlooked associations between sexual identity and experiences of provider-based contraceptive coercion - that is, pressure from a healthcare provider to use or not use birth control. In 2023, we used the online Prolific panel to survey U.S. reproductive-age people assigned female at birth about their contraceptive care (N = 1,399; mean age = 32.6, SD = 8.24). We assessed differences in contraceptive care preferences and coercion across sexual identities and used open-ended survey resp

Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Older Adults: Findings From the Brazilian Health System.

The primary objective of this research was to describe the prevalence of violence against older adults according to sexual orientation as documented in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) in Brazil. SINAN is a national database that compiles violence-related notifications reported by healthcare services. This ecological study analyzed aggregated data at the population level, focusing on violence notifications involving individuals aged 50 and above from 2017 to 2021. The data underwent descriptive and bivariate statistical analyses, adhering to a significance level of 5%. The co

The 'Informed Matter' of Gay and Bisexual Men's (Potential) Use of HIV Antiretrovirals to Prevent COVID-19.

In 2020, there were reports that HIV antiretrovirals, specifically the combination tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (TDF/FTC), had therapeutic potential for COVID-19. In the context of scant empirical evidence at the time to confirm such an effect, we sought to understand the ways that gay and bisexual men (GBM) made sense of-and embodied-information about HIV antiretrovirals in relation to preventing and/or treating COVID-19. We conducted interviews with 26 participants between August and November 2020. To understand how information about, and experiences of, consuming antiretr

Irresponsibility Stereotypes Exacerbate Effects of Sexual Violence on Cisgender Bisexual Women's Coping Drinking Motives.

OBJECTIVE: Bisexual women experience disparities in alcohol use outcomes compared with both lesbian and heterosexual women. Bisexual women also experience higher rates of sexual violence and alcohol use following sexual violence. We examined whether coping drinking motives explain the link between adult sexual violence severity and alcohol use and whether dimensions of binegativity (i.e., hostility, instability, irresponsibility) moderate the effects of sexual violence. METHOD: The sample consisted of 355 young (ages 18-35) cisgender bisexual women drinkers (mean age = 25.8, 84.2% White) recr

Minority stress and mental health in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer survivors of sexual assault.

Extant research has shown that sexual violence disproportionately affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals, conferring risk for the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and related mental health conditions. However, little research has focused on specific vulnerabilities among LGBTQ+-identified sexual assault (SA) survivors (e.g., minority stress) and their associations with post-SA psychopathology. To address this gap, we examined associations between experiences of minority stress and post-SA psychopathology in a sample of LGBTQ+ individuals

Disparities in food insecurity between sexual minority and heterosexual adults - a higher burden on bisexual individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minorities-individuals who identify as gay/lesbian, bisexual, or other non-heterosexual individuals-experience higher rates of food insecurity (FI) compared to heterosexual individuals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, discrimination and structural racism, which are known risk factors for food insecurity, were perpetuated against sexual and racial/ethnic minorities. However, to our knowledge, a nationally representative analysis of the impact of the pandemic on food insecurity by sexual minority status and based on race/ethnicity is missing. We aimed to determine the degree of

Risk and Protective Factors for Intimate Partner Violence Against Bisexual Victims: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Bisexual-identifying individuals appear to be at increased risk of experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to people of other sexualities. The purpose of this systematic scoping review was to examine risk and protective factors for the perpetration of IPV against bisexual victims and to provide a preliminary quality assessment of the included studies. A systematic search of academic and grey literature was conducted in February 2021. Inclusion criteria specified that study participants identified as bisexual, that the study examined risk or protective factors for IPV, and that fi

Novel Bisexual Flower Control Gene Regulates Sex Differentiation in Melon (Cucumis melo L.).

The sex-control system involves several mechanisms in melon. The present study identified a novel bisexual flower control gene from the hermaphroditic melon germplasm, different from the previously recognized one. Genetic analysis showed that a single recessive gene in the newly identified locus b controlled the bisexual flower phenotype in melons. We generated 1431 F2 segregating individuals for genetic mapping of locus b, which was delimited to a 47.94 kb region. Six candidate genes were identified in the delimited interval, and candidate No. 4 encoding melon CPR5 protein was selected as the

Explicit Relationship Agreements and HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Use by Gay and Bisexual Men in Relationships.

Relationship agreements are important for HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men (GBM) in relationships, with research earlier in the HIV epidemic often finding that agreements specified monogamy or condom use with casual partners. There is evidence that HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has shifted sexual practices among some men in relationships, such as allowing condomless sex with casual partners, but there has been little attention paid to relationship agreements among GBM who use PrEP. In this paper, we analyzed national, Australian, cross-sectional data from an online survey comple

Pre-exposure prophylaxis and bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVES: While pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents HIV acquisition among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM), PrEP-using GBM may be more likely to engage in sexual behaviours associated with bacterial STIs. We examined associations between PrEP use, condomless anal sex (CAS), number of anal sex partners, oral sex and bacterial STI diagnoses among GBM living in Canada's three largest cities. METHODS: Among HIV-negative/unknown-status GBM in the baseline of the Engage cohort study, we fit a structural equation model of the associations between any PrEP use, sexual be

Epidemiology of Early Monkeypox Virus Transmission in Sexual Networks of Gay and Bisexual Men, England, 2022.

After community transmission of monkeypox virus was identified in Europe, interviews of 45 case-patients from England indicated transmission in international sexual networks of gay and bisexual men since April 2022. Interventions targeting sex-on-premises venues, geospatial dating applications, and sexual health services are likely to be critical for outbreak control.
