"Locked in my body, caught up in my mind": Neural signatures of body image rumination in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Body image is a multidimensional construct crucial to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Cognitive-emotional mechanisms shaping body image, particularly AN patients' tendency to ruminate, remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated body-focused rumination using a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Rumination Induction task. METHODS: Patients (n = 18) and healthy controls (n = 19) completed baseline assessments of rumination, body appreciation, and clinical measures. During fMRI, participants engaged in a task with self- and body

Do Weight Suppression and Body Mass Index Predict Daily Body Image and Eating Urges in Non-Clinical Adults?

INTRODUCTION: The current study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine whether body mass index (BMI) and weight suppression (highest minus current weight) predicted momentary body dissatisfaction and disordered eating urges, including dietary restriction, excessive exercise, binge eating, and unhealthy eating, and whether trait eating disorder (ED) symptoms moderated these associations. METHOD: Data were collected from 686 adults (75% female), comprising community participants and undergraduate students, through six daily EMA surveys over seven days (42 possible assessments).

Anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder: A comparison of body image concerns and explicit and implicit attractiveness beliefs.

Although body image is central to the etiological models of anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder, studies comparing body image and beliefs about attractiveness between the disorders are rare. Sixty-nine individuals (anorexia nervosa: n=24, body dysmorphic disorder: n=23, healthy controls: n=22) completed self-report measures (body image and general psychopathology), diagnostic interviews, and Go/No-Go Association tasks measuring implicit associations. Compared to controls, both clinical groups exhibited greater negative body image, a more negative attitude toward their physical selves

Looking at my body. Similarities and differences between anorexia nervosa patients and controls in body image visual processing.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion is a core symptom of eating disorders. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies on body image processing, described different patterns of neural response, mainly involving the inferior and superior parietal lobules, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), with conflicting results. METHODS: The neural response to the view of their own body pictures (normal size and distorted) was evaluated in 18 female anorexia nervosa (AN) restricting type patients, and in 19 healthy female subjects (HC) using fMRI. Clinical assessment was performed by mea

Body image, emotions and thought control strategies in body dysmorphic disorder compared to eating disorders and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: A disordered body image, emotions such as shame and disgust, and intrusive thoughts are described as important and interdependent features of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). However, research in this field is scarce and knowledge is often based on clinical observation. METHODS: The present study examined body image dimensions, emotions, and thought control strategies in individuals with: BDD (n=31), anorexia nervosa (n=32), bulimia nervosa (n=34), and healthy controls (n=33). Assessment was based on structured diagnostic interviews and self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: Individu

Multidimensional body image comparisons among patients with eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and clinical controls: a multisite study.

Body image disturbance is considered a core characteristic of eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), however its definition has been unclear within the literature. This study examined the multidimensional nature of body image functioning among individuals with either anorexia nervosa (AN; n=35), bulimia nervosa (BN; n=26), or BDD (n=56), relative to female (n=34) and male (n=36) psychiatric controls. Participants were recruited from 10 treatment centers in the United States and England and completed psychometrically validated and standardized self-report measures of body image. O

Bodies in relation--bodies in transition: lesbian partners of trans men and body image.

Presenting published narratives of transgender and transsexual men (henceforth "trans men"), along with case study interview narratives from five lesbian-identified partners of trans men, I consider how body image issues may surface both individually and interpersonally in relation to the body dysphoria of a trans partner. In addition to self-reports of negatively shifting body image among some interviewees, I also discuss how negative body image may adversely affect these relationships in terms of sexual and non-sexual intimacy, bodily self-expression, and self-confidence. I term these proces

Association between Body Image Profiles, Prepregnancy BMI, and Weight Gain during Pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: During a normal pregnancy, the body undergoes several physiological adaptations, and a woman's body weight and size change rapidly over a short period of time. Pregnancy may be associated with increased susceptibility to developing body image dissatisfaction, which can have negative consequences for the mother (e.g., depression, eating disorders) and the child (e.g., childhood obesity). Women who were already overweight/obese prepregnancy appear to be particularly at risk, as they are often dissatisfied with their body image already before pregnancy. This study aims to investigat

The impacts of a justice-focused body image program for early adolescents.

To address gaps in universal, diversity-focused eating disorders prevention with early adolescents, our team co-created an evidence-informed body image intervention through a community-engaged, participatory research process. The Body Justice intervention and associated research were co-created by a team of middle school students and staff and undergraduate students and faculty in the Pacific Northwest United States. The intervention includes eight brief lessons (six hours total) with culturally-tailored content rooted in cognitive dissonance and media literacy (e.g., cultural appearance ideal

Determining the relationship between Orthorexia Nervosa risk and body image in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a process that involves social, psychological, and physical changes which may be a turning point for improvement or onset/relapse of eating disorders. Studies conducted have emphasized that, in addition to classical eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), new types (e.g., orthorexia nervosa) and subclinical disorders are also seen in pregnant women. Based on this information, this is a descriptive study that was carried out to determine the relationship between the risk of orthorexia in pregnant women and body image. MATERIAL-METHOD: The study include

Profiles of body image concerns and their associations with disordered eating behaviors.

Although body image concerns (BIC) are recognized as a core driver in the development of disordered eating behaviors, the combined role of various types of BIC remains underexamined. This study relied on latent profile analysis to identify the main configurations of self-reported BIC (i.e., body checking and avoidance, perceived physical appearance, and fear of negative appearance evaluation) observed in a sample of 419 French-Canadian individuals (Mage = 26.59, SDage = 9.23). The role of body mass index, sex, and age on profile membership was also examined, as well as the relation between pro

Body image and perception among adults with and without phantom limb pain.

BACKGROUND: Following lower-limb amputation, phantom limb pain (i.e., pain perceived as coming from the amputated portion of the limb) is common. Phantom limb pain may be associated with impaired body image and perception, which may be targets for rehabilitative intervention. OBJECTIVE: To compare measures of body image and perception between adults with and without phantom limb pain post amputation and evaluate associations between measures of body image and perception and phantom limb pain. DESIGN: Survey. SETTING: Online, remote assessment. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two adults ≥1 year post

Body image and associated factors among sexual minority men: A systematic review.

Research suggests that the risk of body image concerns among sexual minority men is high. Recent work has increasingly examined body image in relation to psychological, interpersonal, and behavioral constructs, but these findings have yet to be consolidated and critically examined to identify potential risk and protective factors. The present study sought to systematically review and synthesize published findings on body image among sexual minority men. A total of 136 articles published between January 2011 and March 2022 were included. Sexual minority men were generally reported to have more
