Novel application of chemical cold packs for treatment of exercise-induced hyperthermia: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Heat-related illness is a common disease with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite no proven efficacy, application of chemical cold packs (CCP) to the skin overlying the large vessels of the neck, groin, and axillae is a traditional recommended cooling modality. The study objective was to compare the cooling rates of CCP applied to these traditional areas vs the glabrous skin surfaces of the cheeks, palms, and soles in exercise-induced hyperthermia. METHODS: Ten healthy adult male volunteers walked on a treadmill in a heated room (40°±0.5°C) while wearing insulated military

Design and testing of a liquid cooled garment for hot environments.

Liquid cooled garments (LCGs) are considered a viable method to protect individuals from hyperthermia and heat-related illness when working in thermally stressful environments. While the concept of LCGs was proposed over 50 years ago, the design and testing of these systems is undeveloped and stands in need of further study. In this study, a detailed heat transfer model of LCG in a hot environment was built to analyze the effects of different factors on the LCG performance, and to identify the main limitations to achieve maximum performance. An LCG prototype was designed and fabricated. Series

Exertion-induced fatigue and thermoregulation in the cold.

Cold exposure facilitates body heat loss which can reduce body temperature, unless mitigated by enhanced heat conservation or increased heat production. When behavioral strategies inadequately defend body temperature, vasomotor and thermogenic responses are elicited, both of which are modulated if not mediated by sympathetic nervous activation. Both exercise and shivering increase metabolic heat production which helps offset body heat losses in the cold. However, exercise also increases peripheral blood flow, in turn facilitating heat loss, an effect that can persist for some time after exerci

Management of Body Temperature via the Respiratory Tract.

Hypothermia, defined as a core body temperature ≤35°C, significantly increases morbidity and mortality in mechanically ventilated patients across numerous care settings. Physiologically, the upper airway conditions inspired gases to body temperature and humidity, minimizing heat energy loss and preventing mucosal damage. Instrumentation, such as endotracheal intubation, bypasses this natural mechanism, leading to considerable heat and moisture loss, potentially exacerbating hypothermia risks in critically ill patients. Active humidifiers and heat and moisture exchangers represent common strate

Stepping Out of the Cold: The Use of Surface Cooling Devices for Targeted Normothermia Temperature Management in Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Survivors-Common Pitfalls and Proposed Solutions.

The critical care unit at the University Hospital of Wales is a 38-bedded tertiary center. In 2023, the unit admitted 1251 unscheduled patients, of which 131 were out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) patients. The unit also participated in the Targeted Temperature Management 2 study and adopted the findings shortly after its publication in 2021. This gave us a unique exposure into the pitfalls associated with changing surface cooling protocols. The aim of this quality and safety initiative was to explore the causes of failure to comply with normothermic temperature targets in the OOHCA popul

Field-based body temperatures reveal behavioral thermoregulation strategies of the Atlantic marsh fiddler crab Minuca pugnax.

Behavioral thermoregulation is an important defense against the negative impacts of climate change for ectotherms. In this study we examined the use of burrows by a common intertidal crab, Minuca pugnax, to control body temperature. To understand how body temperatures respond to changes in the surface temperature and explore how efficiently crabs exploit the cooling potential of burrows to thermoregulate, we measured body, surface, and burrow temperatures during low tide on Sapelo Island, GA in March, May, August, and September of 2019. We found that an increase in 1°C in the surface temperatu

Relationships of body surface thermography with core temperature, birth weight and climatic variables in neonatal lambs born during early spring in an arid region.

The main cause of death in newborn lambs is hypothermia, so is necessary to identify the factors affecting variations in body surface temperatures of sheep neonates because approximately 60% of their body heat losses occur through the skin. This study aimed to establish relationships among body surface thermography from different regions with rectal temperature (RT), birth weight (BW) and climatic variables in hair breed newborn lambs during early spring in an arid region. Data of body surface temperatures measured by infrared thermography (entire head, eye, muzzle, ear, entire body, shoulder,

A Comprehensive Update of Current Anesthesia Perspectives on Therapeutic Hypothermia.

Normal thermal regulation is a result of the integration of afferent sensory, central control, and efferent responses to temperature change. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a technique utilized during surgery to protect vital organs from ischemia; however, in doing so leads to other physiological changes. Indications for inducing hypothermia have been described for neuroprotection, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, surgical repair of thoracoabdominal and intracranial aneurysms, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, and arterial switch operations in neonates. Initially it was thought that

Both Low Temperature and Shorter Duration of Food Availability Delay Testicular Regression and Affect the Daily Cycle in Body Temperature in a Songbird.

Photoperiodic control of reproduction in birds is based on two processes, a positive effect leading to gonadal maturation and an inhibitory effect subsequently inducing regression. Nonphotoperiodic cues can modulate photoperiodic control, particularly the inhibitory process. In previous studies of common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), (1) restriction of food availability to 8 h after dawn had little effect on testicular maturation but dramatically delayed subsequent regression and (2) lower ambient temperature also had little effect during maturation but delayed regression. Could the effects of

Daily rhythmicity of the thermoregulatory responses of locally adapted Brazilian sheep in a semiarid environment.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the daily rhythmicity of the thermoregulatory responses of Morada Nova ewes that were raised in a semiarid environment. The experiment was conducted during the dry season. Data were collected from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.. Samples were taken over the course of 8 days, with a 1-week interval between sampling periods. During each day that the data were collected, animals were measured once an hour for 24 h in an area directly exposed to solar radiation. The environment was characterized by measuring the following variables: air temperature (TA), relative humi

Controversies in the temperature management of critically ill patients.

Although body temperature is a classic primary vital sign, its value has received little attention compared with the others (blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate). This may result from the fact that unlike the other primary vital signs, aging and diseases rarely affect the thermoregulatory system. Despite this, when humans are exposed to various anesthetics and analgesics and acute etiologies of non-infectious and infectious diseases in perioperative and intensive care settings, abnormalities may occur that shift body temperature up and down. A recent upsurge in clinical evidence i

Effect of altered ambient temperature on breathing in ponies.

The objective was to determine the effect of moderate changes in ambient temperature (TA) on breathing and body temperature in ponies chronically exposed to a TA of 21 degrees C in the summer and 5 degrees C in the winter. Normal (n = 6) and chronic carotid body-denervated (n = 6, 1-2 yr) ponies were studied during 1) winter months over 3-4 days at 5 (control TA) and 23 degrees C and 2) summer months over 2-4 days at 21 (control TA), 30, and 12 degrees C. Neither rectal nor arterial temperature changed with any alteration of TA (P greater than 0.10). Skin temperature (Tsk) always changed by 2-

Endothermic physiology of extinct megatooth sharks.

The evolution of the extinct megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon, and its close phylogenetic relatives remains enigmatic. A central question persists regarding the thermophysiological origins of these large predatory sharks through geologic time, including whether O. megalodon was ectothermic or endothermic (including regional endothermy), and whether its thermophysiology could help to explain the iconic shark's gigantism and eventual demise during the Pliocene. To address these uncertainties, we present unique geochemical evidence for thermoregulation in O. megalodon from both clumped isotope p

An obligatory role for AgRP neurons in maintaining body temperature during time-restricted feeding.

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding on chow but not on HFD, and caused no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feed

The effect of seasonal heat acclimatization on cool-seeking behaviour during passive heat stress in young adults.

Seasonal heat acclimatization is known to enhance autonomic thermoeffector responses, whereas the behavioural response following seasonal heat acclimatization remains unknown. We investigated whether seasonal heat acclimatization would alter autonomic and behavioural thermoregulatory responses. Sixteen healthy participants (eight males and eight females) underwent two trials involving 50 min of lower-leg passive heating (lower-leg submersion in 42°C water) with (Fan trial) and without (No fan trial) the voluntary use of a fan in a moderate thermal environment (27°C, 50% relative humidity) acro

Impact of a simulated multiday heatwave on nocturnal physiology, behavior, and sleep: a 10-day confinement study.

This study investigated the impact of a multiday heatwave on nocturnal physiology, behavior, and sleep under controlled conditions with comprehensive monitoring of environmental factors and participant activities. Seven young healthy males were confined for 10 days in controlled conditions that ranged between hot-to-warm (day: 35.4 °C, night: 26.3 °C) during nights 4-6 and temperate (day: 25.4 °C, night: 22.3 °C) before (nights 1-3) and after (nights 7-10) the heatwave. Measurements included core and skin temperatures, heart rate, sympathovagal balance, vasomotion indicators, urine samples, bl

A high-resolution voxel model for predicting local tissue temperatures in humans subjected to warm and hot environments.

This work describes and presents results from a new three-dimensional whole-body model of human thermoregulation. The model has been implemented using a version of the "Brooks Man" anatomical data set, consisting of 1.3x10(8) cubic volume elements (voxels) measuring 0.2 cm/side. The model simulates thermoregulation through passive mechanisms (metabolism, blood flow, respiration, and transpiration) and active mechanisms (vasodilatation, vasoconstriction, sweating, and shivering). Compared with lumped or compartment models, a voxel model is capable of high spatial resolution and can capture a le

Thermometry and calorimetry assessment of sweat response during exercise in the heat.

Our objective was to characterise sweat rate responses in a hot environment during rest and subsequent increasing levels of exercise in relation to thermometrically (i.e., rectal, tympanic, mean skin and mean body temperatures) and calorimetrically derived (i.e., change in body heat storage) thermal parameters. Ten healthy males volunteered and entered an environmental chamber set at 42 degrees C. Participants rested seated during their first hour inside the chamber. Thereafter, they exercised to volitional exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at 20 W with step increments of 20 W h(-1). Across time
