The enantioselective oxidation of 2° alcohols to ketones is an important reaction in synthetic chemistry, especially if it can be achieved using O2 -driven alcohol oxidases under mild reaction conditions. However to date, oxidation of secondary alcohols using alcohol oxidases has focused on activated benzylic or allylic substrates, with unactivated secondary alcohols showing poor activity. Here we show that cholesterol oxidase (EC 1.1.3.6) could be engineered for activity towards a range of aliphatic, cyclic, acyclic, allylic and benzylic secondary alcohols. Additionally, since the variants de

The reactivity of diazadiphosphapentalene 1 towards various substrates was investigated. Reaction of 1 with ammonia-borane resulted in transfer hydrogenolysis concomitantly with the cleavage of a P-N bond. By treatment of 1 with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO), oxidation took place at one of the phosphorus atoms of 1, and a P(V) /P(III) mixed-valence derivative was isolated. At the same time, it was demonstrated that only one of the phosphorus atoms in 1 behaves as an electron donor for electrophiles and Lewis acids. The former afforded an intramolecularly coordinated phosphine-ph

C-H bond functionalization of arenes with boranes continues to be a challenge in catalysis, with late transition and rare earth metals shown to be catalytically active. In this study, group 4 metallocenes grafted onto acidic sulfated zirconia (SZO) are demonstrated to catalyze arene borylation with pinacolborane (HBpin). Catalysis studies at partial HBpin conversions (59-68%) using Cp2M(Me)/SZO (M = Ti, Zr, or Hf; Cp = cyclopentadienyl) catalysts reveal that Zr exhibits greater selectivity and activity than Ti and Hf. At 0.16 mol % of Zr, Cp2ZrMe/SZO achieves 332 turnovers at high HBpin conver

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are distinguished as exceptional nucleophiles capable of forming stable adducts when treated with a variety of electrophiles. It has been reported that the nucleophilic attack of free NHCs on heteroallene electrophiles, such as carbon dioxide, carbon disulfide, isothiocyanates, and carbodiimides, among others, allows for the generation of adducts with a variety of structural architectures and applications. Compared to the well-developed area of adducts based on classical NHC ligands, the related species based on mesoionic triazol-5-ylidenes have been under develo

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with high photoluminescence quantum yields and a fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) are of the highest interest for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In the past decade, triaryl boranes with multiple resonance effect (MR) have captured significant attention. The efficiency of MR-TADF emitters strongly depends on small singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST), but also on large reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate constants (kRISC). The latter effect has strongly been focused on very recently and has drawn attention to heavier e

In this study, we introduced an approach combining transition state analysis and data-driven modeling that leverages the electronic states of ketone substrates to systematically analyze the selectivity of asymmetric reduction. Transition state analysis of the reduction of acetophenone and trifluoroacetophenone using the Corey-Bakshi-Shibata catalyst, B-chlorodiisopinocamphenylborane, and alpine borane successfully explained the reaction selectivity. Analysis was extended to a broader set of 315 asymmetric reduction reactions by incorporating the grid-based electronic and electrostatic features

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Male fertility is essential to bovine reproduction, particularly when bulls are used for artificial insemination or single-sire breeding. Bull breeding and soundness examinations (BBSE) are routinely undertaken to identify potentially unfit bulls for breeding. Multiple criteria, including physical examination and determination of testicular and semen parameters, characterize BBSE. Knowledge interstices within this realm, especially in tropical African settings, necessitate pragmatic approaches to address the same. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of bul

BACKGROUND: Boron-based compounds are attracting increasing interest due to their antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and bioactive properties. However, the insecticidal potential and mechanism of action of 1,2-diborane derivatives have not yet been investigated. This study investigated the effects of these compounds on the larvae of Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex pipiens. A new 1,3,2-diazaborinane derivative (comp. 6) was synthesized and characterized.
METHODS: The effects of compound 6 and five previously synthesized diborane/diborolane derivatives were evaluated against the mosquito vect

A series of pentaaryl-substituted diazaboroles have been prepared for the first time by a novel strategy based on the C-C double bond formation from imidoylstannane reagents in the presence of dibromophenylboranes. The aryl substituents on the 4,5-position of the planar C(2)N(2)B core have substantial effects on their electronic structures. All the new diazaboroles are luminescent both in solution and in the solid state. DFT calculations indicate the 4,5-C-aryl substituents have significant contributions to the LUMOs.

A new adhesive resin containing a reactive monomer, 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) was prepared, and its application to hard tooth tissues and metals was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the average length of 4-META resin tags in enamel and dentin was 22 mu and 40 mu respectively. The tensile adhesive strength between 4-META resin and enamel was about 130 kg/cm2 after etching with 65% phosphoric acid. Its bond strength to dentin treated with a cleaning solution of 10% citric acid and 3% ferric chloride was about 190 kg/cm2. In precious alloys heated at 500

The formation of the siloxane bond is one of the most important reactions used in silicone chemistry and technology. In this paper, a new process for the condensation of alkoxy-functional silanes to form a siloxane bond is presented. The new reaction is catalyzed by a Ge(II)+ complex stabilized by pentamethylcyclopentadiene with a weakly coordinated anion, tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borane. A mechanistic study of this new condensation process using model alkoxy-functional silanes and propionaldehyde is completed. It is established that the quantitative conversion of alkoxysilanes to the siloxa

Trypanosomosis caused by infection with protozoan parasites of the genus Trypanosoma is a major health constraint to cattle production in many African countries. One hundred and seventy one Bos indicus cattle from traditional pastoral Maasai (87) and more intensively managed Boran (84) animals in Tanzania were screened by PCR for the presence of African animal trypanosomes (Trypanosoma congolense, Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma brucei), using blood samples archived on FTA cards. All cattle screened for trypanosomes were also genotyped at the highly polymorphic major histocompatibility compl

Carbon disulfide (CS2), tetraethyl lead (TEL), tetraethyl tin (TeET), dithiothreitol (DTT), and gossypol acetic acid (GAA) significantly decreased brain norepinephrine (NE) in rats. The central dopamine (DA) increased after ip administration of CS2, TEL, and DTT, but decreased after TeET and GAA. The brain serotonin decreased only after TeET. Two doses of DTT decreased the NE longer than one dose (24 vs 2 hr) but did not increase DA. L-DOPA, given SC with DTT, delayed the decrease in NE by 24 hr. The similar behavioral and autonomic effects of each of these compounds suggest a central sympatho

A series of Mn(I), Fe(II), and Co(II) complexes with PNH ligands bearing secondary amine functionality were prepared and tested in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitriles using ammonia borane as a hydrogen source. Among all tested complexes, a tetracoordinate Fe(II) bromide, (PNH)FeBr2, proved the most effective, representing a rare example of a highly active iron-based catalytic system for transfer hydrogenation reactions beyond carbonyl compounds and the first example of the iron catalyst for the transfer hydrogenation of nitriles to the corresponding primary amines. The synthetic route for a uterine relaxant, bis(2-[[(2S)-2-([(2R)-2-hydroxy-2-[4-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-phenyl]ethyl]amino)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-7-yl]oxy]-N,N-dimethylacetamide) sulfate (KUR-1246), was established by the coupling of optically active components, the bromohydrin 14 and the amine 24. We now describe the practical synthesis of these two optically active components. Bromohydrin 14 was obtained by the asymmetric borane reduction of the prochiral phenacyl bromide 13 using a catalyst prepared from aluminum triethoxide and a chiral amino alcohol. The other optically active

A relationship between the electronic properties of metal ions in metallacarboranes and their ability to modulate mitochondrial oxidase activity and membrane hyperpolarization in cancer cells was demonstrated. Quantum chemistry methods, including DFT and molecular dynamics simulations, were used to understand the oxidized and reduced forms of metallacarboranes and their intramolecular rotatory behavior. According to the low-spin assumption for metal ions, the intramolecular oscillations of cluster ligands in metallacarboranes are significantly influenced by the type of metal and correspond to

The employment of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) across several fields in chemistry and biology has required the creation of a high number of quantitative assays. Nonetheless, the determination of trace EDTA, especially in biologics and vaccines, remains challenging. Herein, we introduce an automated high-throughput approach based on EDTA esterification in 96-well plates using boron trifluoride-methanol combined with rapid analysis by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). Derivatization of EDTA to its methyl ester (Me

Z-type ligands have been highly successful in stabilizing transition-metal fragments in unique coordination geometries and in enabling novel reactivities. However, examples of the use of these ligands in stabilizing elusive main-group metal fragments are scarce. In this study, we present the stabilization of aluminum (I) halides by an ambiphilic tris(phosphine)borane ligand. Unlocking unprecedented coordination chemistry at aluminum, the unique electronic structure of the novel compounds is analyzed in detail experimentally and computationally. We report on so-called "hidden FLPs" (FLP: frustrated Lewis pair) consisting of a phosphorus ylide featuring a group 13 fragment in the ortho position of a phenyl ring scaffold to form five-membered ring structures. Although the formation of the Lewis acid/base adducts was observed in the solid state, most of the title compounds readily react with carbon dioxide to provide stable insertion products. Strikingly, 0.3-3.0 mol% of the reported aluminum and gallium/carbon-based ambiphiles catalyze the reduction of CO2 to methanol with satisfactory high selectivity and yields using pinacol borane as

Zinc has been an element of choice for carbon dioxide reduction in recent years. Zinc compounds have been showcased as catalysts for carbon dioxide hydrosilylation and hydroboration. The extent of carbon dioxide reduction can depend on various factors, including electrophilicity at the zinc center and the denticity of the ancillary ligands. In a few cases, the addition of Lewis acids to zinc hydride catalysts markedly influences carbon dioxide reduction. These factors have been investigated by exploring elementary reactions of carbon dioxide hydrosilylation and hydroboration by using cationic
