Forty-six patients with borderline personality disorder with and without major depression and 27 normal volunteers completed the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, a self-rating scale of anger and hostility. The patients with borderline personality had significantly higher scores than the normal volunteers. The scores of the patients with borderline personality disorders were not related to gender, treatment or research setting, the degree of acute distress, or the presence of major depression. These findings suggest that a proneness to anger and hostility are enduring characteristics of borderl

Sixteen female outpatients with borderline personality disorder and prominent behavioral dyscontrol, but without a current episode of major depression, were studied in a double-blind, crossover trial of placebo and the following four active medications: alprazolam (average dose, 4.7 mg/d); carbamazepine (average dose, 820 mg/d); trifluoperazine hydrochloride (average dose, 7.8 mg/d); and tranylcypromine sulfate (average dose, 40 mg/d). Each trial was designed to last six weeks. Tranylcypromine and carbamazepine trials had the highest completion rates. Physicians rated patients as significantly

Borderline Personality (BPD) and Bipolar (BP) disorders stimulate an academic debate between their distinction and the inclusion of Borderline in the Bipolar spectrum. Opponents to this inclusion attribute the important differences and possible diagnostic incomprehension to overlapping symptoms. We tested 248 Borderline and 113 Bipolar patients, consecutively admitted to the Psychiatric Unit, through DSM-IV Axis I and II Disorders (SCID-I/II), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Borderline Personality Disorder Sev

Borderline personality disorders are complex clinical states with highly polymorphic symptoms and signs, leading to delays in their diagnosis and treatment. All international classifications emphasize certain clinical criteria such as unstable identity and interpersonal relationships, feelings of emptiness or boredom, and pathological impulsiveness. The prevalence is about 2%, with a female-male sex ratio of 2 or 3 to 1. Both adolescents and adults may be affected There is a high risk of suicide, addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and criminality. These individuals frequently have a histor

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common mental disorder that severely impairs patients' psychosocial functioning and quality of life and results in prolonged use of health services. Although psychotherapy is recommended as the most effective treatment for patients with BPD, their complex emotional needs can be met in everyday clinical practice by developing integrative, holistic, personalized mental health services tailored to their needs.
AIM AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a specialized psychodynamic stepped-care service for BP

Affective phases developing in personality disorder (index-sample--98 patients) were compared to those in cyclothymia (85 patients--control group). A preference of phase dynamics in the group of abnormalities relating to ICD-10 item "Borderline personality disorder" was confirmed. In line with a concept considering personality disorders as clinical syndromes, patients of the index-group have personality disorders with the signs of psychopathological diathesis determined by vulnerability to affective disorders. Affective phases are interpreted not only as an expression of a specific type of per

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently co-occurs with eating disorders (EDs). Disordered eating may serve as a coping strategy to regulate emotions/manage rejection sensitivity, abandonment fears, shame, and self-disgust. Research examining disordered eating in BPD remains limited. This study explored ED pathology/related psychological constructs in adults diagnosed with BPD. Eighty participants completed questionnaires assessing BPD symptom severity, ED pathology, childhood trauma, cognitive distortions, shame, self-disgust, coping, personality traits, and emotion regulation. Mean-c

ObjectivePsychotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. There are unique benefits for patients through psychotherapy, however there are also complications that are under-recognised and have not been neatly summarised for clinicians and trainees. We present a clinical perspective on the potential complications that may arise from treatment.ConclusionsAddressing complications is an essential part of high quality and ethical clinical practice. Potential complications of psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder include: escalation of Non-Suicidal Self-Inju

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by frequent and intense conflict in intimate relationships. Emerging theoretical perspectives have suggested that communication from both individuals with BPD and their partners during times of conflict may exacerbate BPD pathology and therefore reflect an important target for intervention. Communication samples between individuals with BPD and their partners (N = 18 couples) who were seeking conjoint therapy were coded using the Rapid Marital Interactions Coding System-2. No differences were found in the amount of positive, constructive o

The aims of the current study are to describe the basic family relationships, parental bonding patterns, and dyadic adjustment of families with offspring diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and to explore the correlations between these variables related to family relations and BPD symptomatology. The sample consisted of 194 participants, including parents from the control (N = 76) and clinical group (N = 76), and patients with BPD (N = 42). All progenitors completed a measure of family relations, parental bonding, and dyadic adjustment. Patients completed a measure of parental

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Physical pain is an underrecognized area of dysregulation among those with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Disturbances are observed within the experience of acute, chronic, and everyday physical pain experiences for people with BPD. We aimed to synthesize research findings on multiple areas of dysregulation in BPD in order to highlight potential mechanisms underlying the association between BPD and physical pain dysregulation.
RECENT FINDINGS: Potential biological mechanisms include altered neural responses to painful stimuli within cognitive-affective regions of th

BACKGROUND: Factitious disorder (FD) illnesses have increased recently, primarily due to comorbidity with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Psychiatrists, hospital doctors, and general practitioners are interested in and concerned about patients with comorbid FD-BPD.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We used a qualitative analysis of prototypical narratives collected as vignettes by merging individual contributions, case histories, naturalistic observations, and data from mental health practitioners into specific descriptions. Our study used a phenomenological and narrative method to illustrate the

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is thought to involve aberrant social learning, including impaired revision of social interpretations with new evidence (social interpretation inflexibility). However, this topic has received little empirical attention outside of specific literatures, such as moral inference or behavioral economics. Further, the contribution of comorbid depression to BPD-related interpretation inflexibility has not yet been assessed.
METHODS: In two independent samples (Study 1: N = 213; Study 2: N = 210, oversampled for BPD features), we assessed the associat

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between diseases of the thyroid gland and mental illnesses; however, any causal relationship between them remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the causal relationship between borderline personality disorder and four thyroid diseases.
METHODS: The causal relationship was inferred using double-sample Mendelian randomization analysis of appropriate instrumental variables from genome-wide association studies. We calculated the estimated value of the effect using various statistical methods.
RESULTS: Borderline personali

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone are involved in the processing of reward and stress and greatly influence mother-child interactions. Altered hormonal systems have been associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), a disorder characterized by interpersonal deficits. Mothers with BPD tend to perceive interactions with the child as less rewarding and more stressful and interactions are often less reciprocal and have more negative states (i.e. constricted, tense, uncoordinated behaviors). Their children are at elevated risk for psychopathologies. Here, we studied underlyi

Symptomatic disorders often co-occur with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study's purpose was to compare the rates of comorbidity reported by adult and adolescent inpatients with BPD, including complex comorbidity (i.e., a combination of disorders of affect and impulsivity). One hundred four adolescents (aged 13-17) and 290 adults (aged 18-35) with BPD were interviewed using an age-appropriate semistructured interview for the assessment of symptomatic disorders. Lifetime rates of mood disorders and ADHD were quite similar for the two study groups. However, rates of anxiety disorder
