Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) is a valuable method for expanding the lung donor pool. Its indications currently differ across centers. This national retrospective cohort study aimed to describe the profile of donors with lungs transplanted after EVLP and determine the effectiveness of EVLP on lung utilization. We included brain-dead donors with at least one lung offered between 2012 and 2019 in France. Lungs transplanted without or after EVLP were compared with those that were rejected. Donor group phenotypes were determined with multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The association between

Hyperammonemia after lung transplantation is a rare but potentially fatal condition. A 59-year-old male patient affected by pulmonary fibrosis underwent an uncomplicated bilateral lung transplant. Fourteen days after the procedure, the patient developed severe encephalopathy caused by elevated serum ammonia levels. Ureaplasma parvum and Mycoplasma hominis were found on bronchial aspirate and urinary samples as well as on pharyngeal and rectal swabs. Despite the initiation of multimodal therapy, brain damage due to hyperosmolarity was so extensive to evolve into brain death. The autopsy reveale

Embryonic retinae were transplanted onto the midbrain of neonatal congenitally anophthalmic mice and neonatal mice from which both eyes had been removed. When donor mice of the AKR strain were used, the detailed patterns of the transplant projections to the host brain were demonstrated with an antibody to Thy-1.1, which specifically stains neural tissue derived from AKR donors. Many of the subcortical visual centers were innervated, and only small differences were encountered between anophthalmic and eye-enucleated mice. The terminal arbors of transplant-derived axons could not be classified a

Only a single donor's tissue may save or improve lives of one hundred patients. Unfortunately, low governmental and media support of tissue procurement and transplantation programs is a worldwide problem. Loss of an effective tissue procurement program in many countries like Iran, may lead to loss of many thousands valuable tissues each year. To evaluate the rate of skin donation in Mashhad in comparison to other organs and tissues, we extracted the data related to tissue and organ procurement in Mashhad from 2001. Then we evaluated the annual skin allograft needs in the Burn Department of Ima

A twenty four year-old male patient with a history of morbid obesity and acute lymphocytic leukemia diagnosed in 2003, underwent an autologous bone marrow transplantation the same year. He had two relapses of leukemia on 2003 and 2007. On January 2009, he underwent a double cord bone marrow transplantation with myeloablative conditioning and craneospinal radiotherapy. The patient received prophylaxis with aciclovir, cotrimoxazole and fluconazole. The latter was changed afterwards to posaconazole. On day 16 post-transplantation, fever and meningeal signs appeared. The cerebrospinal fluid exam r

The study examined the importance of embryonic donor age for the survival of nigral grafts in 6-OHDA-lesioned marmosets. The issue as to whether donor age is critical for the survival of nigral grafts in primates is controversial, because several early reports suggested that relatively old tissue could survive transplantation and produce functional benefits in monkeys, in contrast to the restrictive time dependence observed in rodents. Embryonic marmoset donors embryos of three different ages were employed: 1) E74 (Carnegie stage 18-19); 2) E83-84 (Carnegie stage 23+); 3) E92-93 (foetal period

Suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) obtained from neonatal or embryonic 19 or 20 day rats, were grafted into the third ventricle of SCN-lesioned arrhythmic siberian chipmunks. Four out of 37 chipmunks showed reappearance of circadian rhythmicity in wheel running activity. In all 4 cases, at least one surviving graft was confirmed in the host brain. Also, vasopressin and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-like immunoreactive substances were found in the graft, suggesting the existence of live SCN neurons. Although the number of successful cases and the intensity of the restored rhythm was limited

There is insufficient data on the outcomes of donation after circulatory death (DCD) multiorgan transplant that includes heart. The primary objective of this study is to compare the overall survival outcomes of DCD and donation after brain death (DBD) multiorgan transplants. We identified all heart transplant patients from 2019 to June of 2023 using the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Database who also received an additional organ (kidney, liver, and lungs). A total of 1,844 DBD and 91 DCD multiorgan transplants occurred within the study period, the majority being combined heart-kidney

The aim of this study was to determine in vitro the DARPP-32 content of donor cells used for striatal transplantation in vivo. The effect of selective embryonic dissection of the lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) was compared with the standard dissection of the whole ganglionic eminence (WGE) at each of three embryonic ages (14, 15, and 16 days of gestation) in the rat. The resultant cell suspensions were cultured for up to 7 days and incubated with antibodies against DARPP-32, a marker of striatal medium spiny neurons; beta-tubulin III, a neuronal marker; GFAP, a marker of reactive astrocytes

The "standard position" on organ donation is that the donor must be dead in order for vital organs to be removed, a position with which we agree. Recently, Robert Truog and Walter Robinson have argued that (1) brain death is not death, and (2) even though "brain dead" patients are not dead, it is morally acceptable to remove vital organs from those patients. We accept and defend their claim that brain death is not death, and we argue against both the US "whole brain" criterion and the UK "brain stem" criterion. Then we answer their arguments in favour of removing vital organs from "brain dead"

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by movement abnormalities, cognitive impairment, and abnormal behavior as well as sleep and weight problems. It is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the huntingtin gene on the short arm of chromosome 4, which results in the progressive degeneration of the basal ganglia (caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus), cerebral cortex, brainstem, thalamus, and hypothalamus. This chapter considers four avenues of research: (a) the restoration of neurogenesis as an endogenous cell therapy in HD,

Pig kidney xenotransplantation is increasingly regarded as a realistic solution to the current shortage of human organ donors for patients with end-stage organ failure. Recently, the news of three pig-to-human transplantation cases has awakened public interest. Notably, the case by the Alabama team reported detailed and important findings for the xenotransplantation field. Using a genetically modified pig, two porcine kidneys were transplanted into a brain-dead recipient. They applied several approaches established in the preclinical NHP study, including gene-edited pig kidney graft and preope

BACKGROUND: Brain death (BD) has been thought to influence the early course of transplanted organs by triggering a series of nonspecific inflammatory events that in turn may increase the kinetics and intensity of the immunological host responses. In this study early nonspecific, cellular, and molecular changes occurring in kidney isografts from BD donors are compared with those from normal anesthetized, ventilated controls.
METHODS: After induction of brain death, the animals were mechanically ventilated for 6 hr before organ removal. Only rats with stable blood pressure (mean arterial pressu

The eye vesicle of Xenopus borealis has been replaced with the transplanted olfactory primordium from Xenopus laevis in an attempt to determine whether cells from the transplant could migrate along the regrowing olfactory nerve and become incorporated into the CNS of the host. The use of X. laevis and X. borealis pairs allowed us to distinguish the cells of the host from those of the donor at the cellular level by means of the characteristic fluorescent nuclear spots (Q bands) of X. borealis. Transplantation was performed on pairs of animals at stages 23/24. The olfactory anlage was readily in

The transplantation of tissue containing dopamine-producing cells into the mammalian central nervous system is an emerging treatment for Parkinson's disease, despite relatively poor survival of implanted tissue. Recent evidence has suggested that Cytodex microcarriers enhance the survival of dopaminergic rat chromaffin cells transplanted into the rat striatum in the absence of immunosuppression. The current study was undertaken to evaluate the survival of rat and human fetal ventral mesencephalic neurons (VM) implanted alone or after attachment to microcarriers in the striatum of rats without

Over 60% of all patients with dura mater graft-associated Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (dCJD) have been diagnosed in Japan. The incubation period has ranged from 1 to 30 years and the age at onset from 15 to 80 years. Here, we report a 77-year-old male Japanese autopsied dCJD case with the longest incubation period so far in Japan. He received a cadaveric dural graft at the right cranial convexity following a craniotomy for meningioma at the age of 46. At 30 years post-dural graft placement, disorientation was observed as an initial symptom of dCJD. He rapidly began to present with inconsistent s

To summarize this review: it was written concerning human cell transplantations from various human organs based on already published historical reports. It was limited to only clinical cases for therapeutic treatment. Some of the methods in the article are commonly used, well-established methods found in everyday practice. Others are still in the experimental stages. I think we can try these, or even never methods for other cell groups in the near future.
