Delayed feeding of a high-sucrose diet led to increased body weight by affecting the circadian rhythm of body temperature and hepatic lipid-metabolism genes in rats.

Skipping breakfast is an irregular feeding behavior, typically in young people. In our previous study, we established a 4 h-delayed feeding protocol for rats as a breakfast-skipping model and showed that the 4 h-delayed feeding of a high-fat diet led to body weight gain in rats. Excess sucrose induces metabolic syndrome and fatty liver. Recently, excess sucrose intake has received increased attention. Young people generally consume more sugar than adults do. In the present study, we investigated whether a 4 h-delayed feeding promoted high-sucrose diet-induced abnormalities in lipid metabolism,

Effects of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors on mouth to caecum transit time in humans.

The alpha-glucosidase inhibitors acarbose and miglitol have been successfully used to control postprandial hyperglycaemia in diabetics. They probably work by slowing carbohydrate digestion and absorption, but their effect on mouth to caecum transit time has not been studied. The effect acarbose (100 mg), miglitol (100 mg), and placebo on mouth to caecum transit time (380 kcal breakfast with 20 g of lactulose) was investigated in 18 normal volunteers using breath hydrogen analysis. Both miglitol and acarbose significantly increased breath hydrogen excretion (F2,34 = 6.31, p = 0.005) and shorten

Living arrangements and eating behaviors of older adults in the United States.

Associations between living arrangements and several eating behaviors were examined for 4,402 adults aged 55 and older using three-day food intake data from the 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey (NFCS). Compared to those living with a spouse, persons living alone ate more meals alone and consumed a higher proportion of total calories away from home; a higher proportion of those living alone skipped meals, including breakfast. There was a sex differential in the effect of living alone for some, but not all, of the eating behaviors. Both the probability of eating away from home and of s

The association between glucose dynamics and energy intake in young, healthy women.

BACKGROUND: Glucose has been implicated in the control of appetite and food intake. This study investigated whether glycaemic patterns relate to energy intake and whether appetite-related hormones mediate this relationship. METHODS: Thirty healthy young women (age: 25 ± 4 years; BMI: 21.4 ± 2.0 kg/m2) arrived at the laboratory at 8:00 AM after an overnight fast. Upon arrival, participants completed a 30 min resting period, during which the cannula was inserted, and all fasted glucose measurements were collected. Glucose was measured every 5 min using FreeStyle Libre 2™ continuous glucose moni

Long-Term Lignan Intake, Whole Grain Foods, and the Risk of Gout: Results From Two Prospective Cohort Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple plant-based dietary patterns are inversely associated with gout, although the individual constituents driving this association remain unclear. Dietary lignans, a major group of phytoestrogens abundant in plant foods, are metabolized by the gut microflora and may modulate gout risk. We examined the associations between dietary lignan intake, certain whole grain foods rich in lignans, and incident gout. METHODS: We analyzed data from 122,680 individuals in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and Nurses' Health Study. We administered a food frequency questionnaire every

Impact of Simplification Strategies on Postmeal Glucose Excursions in Older Adults with Type 1 Diabetes and Hypoglycemia.

Continuous glucose monitoring with simplification strategies reduces hypoglycemia in older adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D), however the impact on postmeal glycemia is not known. A post-hoc analysis of older adults with T1D randomized to intervention with mealtime simplification strategies, or control, assessed weekly postmeal hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. At baseline, 88 older adults with T1D (71 ± 5 years) in intervention (n = 47) and control (n = 41) had similar number of episodes of postmeal hypo- and hyperglycemia. The mean decrease from baseline to 6 months in episodes of postmeal hyp

Association of the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Consumption Time with NAFLD: The U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017-2020.

BACKGROUND: The timing of food intake can affect the physiological and metabolic functions of the body. However, whether and how the timing of dietary antioxidant intake could influence non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is largely unknown. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) serves as a comprehensive measure that encompasses various dietary antioxidants. This study aims to investigate the association between the meal timing of CDAI and NAFLD in American adults. METHODS: We used data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Dietary intake

The consumption of snacks and soft drinks between meals may contribute to the development and to persistence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

THE HYPOTHESIS: The habit of snacking and drinking soft beverages between breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is very widespread in the western world, could be a primum movens, thereby contributing to the development and subsequent persistence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). WHAT DOES THE PROPOSED HYPOTHESIS BASED ON?: The high prevalence of GERD suggests that it is very probably caused by factors, which are intrinsic and widespread in a western lifestyle. Ingesting snacks or imbibing soft drinks between breakfast, lunch and dinner causes additional gastric acid secretion, acid pocke
