Neural indices of listening effort in noisy environments.

Listening in a noisy environment is challenging for individuals with normal hearing and can be a significant burden for those with hearing impairment. The extent to which this burden is alleviated by a hearing device is a major, unresolved issue for rehabilitation. Here, we found adult users of cochlear implants (CIs) self-reported listening effort during a speech-in-noise task that was positively related to alpha oscillatory activity in the left inferior frontal cortex, canonical Broca's area, and inversely related to speech envelope coherence in the 2-5 Hz range originating in the superior-t

[Mixed transcortical aphasia due to multiple deep white matter infarction in the dominant cerebral hemisphere: a case report].

We report a case of mixed transcortical aphasia (MTA) due to multiple cerebral infarction in the dominant hemisphere in an 80-year-old right-handed woman without hemiplegia. Her spontaneous speech was markedly reduced and auditory comprehension, reading and writing were severely disturbed. Although the repetition of sentences (at most 3 words) was relatively preserved, her speech was echolalic. Brain MRI showed bilateral multiple deep white matter infarction and subcortical infarction of the left parietal lobe, including left angular gyrus, but no abnormal signal intensities were detected in e

[Aphasia caused by left paramedian thalamic infarction. Anatomo-clinical case].

A 67 year-old right-handed man presented with an aphasia of acute onset associated to paralysis of vertical eye movements, mild cerebellar right dysmetria and right hemiparesis without hemianopia. CT scan showed two low density areas in the left thalamus and left occipital lobe. Neuropsychological examination revealed a non fluent aphasia with normal repetition, semantic paraphasias, perseverations and good comprehension of verbal and written commands. There was no alexia. Writing was impaired only by motor disturbances. Three weeks after the onset, tetraparesis and impairment of consciousness

The interpreter's brain during rest - Hyperconnectivity in the frontal lobe.

Language in its highest complexity is a unique human faculty with simultaneous translation being among the most demanding language task involving both linguistic and executive functions. In this context, bilingually grown up individuals as well as simultaneous interpreters (SIs) represent appropriate groups for studying expertise-related neural adaptations in the human brain. The present study was performed to examine if a domain-specific neural network activation pattern, constituted by brain regions involved in speech processing as well as cognitive control mechanisms can be detected during

Plasticity in language cortex and white matter tracts after resection of dominant inferior parietal lobule arteriovenous malformations: a combined fMRI and DTI study.

OBJECTIVE: The dominant inferior parietal lobe (IPL) contains cortical and subcortical structures that serve language processing. A high incidence of postoperative short-term aphasia and good potential for language reorganization have been observed. The authors' goal was to study the plasticity of the language cortex and language-related fibers in patients with brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) located in the IPL. METHODS: A total of 6 patients who underwent microsurgical treatment of an IPL BAVM were prospectively recruited between September 2016 and May 2018. Blood oxygen level-depe

Cerebral glucose metabolism as a predictor of recovery from aphasia in ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The recovery of language function seen in poststroke aphasia is significantly related to the severity of the initial neurologic deficit. However, a great deal of variability still remains in the improvement that is actually achieved. To detect predictors that will help in explaining this variability, positron emission tomography (PET) and fluorodeoxyglucose F 18 (18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose) were used and the results were analyzed by stepwise regression. DESIGN: Using PET imaging after injection of fluorodeoxyglucose F 18, the regional changes in glucose metabolism in 26 patients at a

Gross anatomy of the longitudinal fascicle of Sapajus sp.

Opposing genetic and cultural-social explanations for the origin of language are currently the focus of much discussion. One of the functions linked to the longitudinal fascicle is language, which links Wernicke's area and Broca's area in the brain, and its size should indicate the brain increase in the evolution. Sapajus is a New World primate genus with high cognition and advanced tool use similar to that of chimpanzees. A study of the gross anatomy of the longitudinal fascicle of Sapajus using Kingler's method found it to differ from other studied primates, such as macaques and chimpanzees,

Amnesia following a discrete basal forebrain lesion.

Destructive lesions of the basal forebrain are associated with memory impairment in both humans and experimental animals. The basal forebrain is thought to contribute to memory function by providing cholinergic innervation to critical memory structures such as the hippocampus and amygdala. In previously reported clinical cases of basal forebrain amnesia, multiple neuroanatomical regions have been damaged, preventing identification of the minimal critical lesion necessary to produce an amnestic syndrome. We describe a patient who developed persistent, global anterograde and retrograde amnesia f

Crossed aphasia in Chinese: a clinical survey.

According to our clinical observations from various aspects of stroke patients, such as the total incidence of aphasia, the incidence of aphasia after left brain damage of the dextrals, the aphasia that occurs in patients without hemiplegia, and the types of aphasia, a much higher incidence of crossed aphasia is seen among the stroke patients of the Han (the largest ethnic group in China) as compared with the Uighur-Kazaks (U-K) in China and the Occidentals documented in the literature. Motor aphasia is most common and pure sensory or posterior aphasia is rarely seen in Han patients. The disti

The diagonal band of Broca in health and disease.

The diagonal band of Broca (DBB) contains the second largest cholinergic cell group in the human brain, known as the nucleus of the vertical limb of the DBB (nvlDBB). It has major projections to the hippocampus, but it is often underinvestigated, partly due to its ill-defined anatomical boundaries and hence the difficulty of reliable sampling. In this chapter, we have reviewed the historical literature to reestablish the anatomy of the nvlDBB, distinguishing it from neighboring basal forebrain cholinergic nuclei. Although varying degrees of neuronal loss in the nvlDBB have been reported in a r

Connections of the Human Orbitofrontal Cortex and Inferior Frontal Gyrus.

The direct connections of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were traced with diffusion tractography imaging and statistical analysis in 50 humans, to help understand better its roles in emotion and its disorders. The medial OFC and ventromedial prefrontal cortex have direct connections with the pregenual and subgenual parts of the anterior cingulate cortex; all of which are reward-related areas. The lateral OFC (OFClat) and its closely connected right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) have direct connections with the supracallosal anterior cingulate cortex; all of which are punishment or nonreward-re

Brain morphology in children with specific language impairment.

The planum temporale and pars triangularis have been found to be larger in the left hemisphere than the right in individuals with normal language skills. Brain morphology studies of individuals with developmental language disorders report reversed asymmetry or symmetry of the planum, although the bulk of this research has been completed on adults with dyslexia. Pars triangularis has not been studied in the developmental language impaired population. In this study, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used for quantitative comparisons of the planum temporale (Wernicke's area) and pars triangula

Neurons with access to the general circulation in the central nervous system of the rat: a retrograde tracing study with fluoro-gold.

Central nervous system neurons which have access to the general circulation were identified by injecting the retrograde tracer Fluoro-Gold peripherally. Fluoro-Gold does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier but is taken up by nerve terminals which project to areas supplied by fenestrated capillaries or to the periphery. Fluoro-Gold-accumulating neurons were present in the following regions or cell groups of the central nervous system: diagonal band of Broca; medial preoptic area; organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis; subfornical organ; anterior periventricular area; paraventricular nuc

Cortical folding abnormalities in schizophrenia patients with resistant auditory hallucinations.

Gray matter volume and functional abnormalities have been reported in language-related cortex in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations. Such abnormalities might denote abnormal cortical folding development, which can now be investigated using gyrification measures. Anatomic magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were obtained from 30 schizophrenia patients screened for resistant auditory hallucinations and 28 control subjects. We searched for overall gyrification abnormalities in the whole cortex as well as localized abnormalities in language-related cortex, assuming that gyrification

The memory for words: Armand Trousseau on aphasia.

Of all the nineteenth-century physicians whose names still resonate today, Armand Trousseau is perhaps the one most familiar, for his description of carpal spasm as a sign of hypocalcemia (Trousseau's sign) and his description of the hypercoagulable state associated with cancer (Trousseau's syndrome). In the last three years of his life, Trousseau turned his attention to aphasia, which he included in his 1864 and 1865 lectures given at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris and which he discussed in an address to the Imperial Academy of Medicine in 1865. Trousseau preceded Wernicke in describing aphasia

Organization of the galaninergic neuronal system in the brain of the gecko Hemidactylus frenatus.

Galanin (GAL) is a 29 amino acid peptide present in the central nervous system (CNS) as well as peripheral tissues in vertebrates. However, the brain distribution pattern of GAL is understudied in reptiles. The aim of this study was to determine the organization of galaninergic neuronal system in the brain of the gecko Hemidactylus frenatus, a tropical and sub-tropical lizard, using rabbit anti-galanin antibody. In the telencephalon, GAL-ir perikarya and fibres were found in the lateral septal nucleus, but only GAL-ir fibres were observed in the striatum, nucleus accumbens, anterior commissure

[A case of arteriovenous malformation successfully treated with functional mapping of the language area by PET activation study].

The authors report a case of temporal AVM safely treated by mapping the language area with PET activation study. The patient was a 50-year-old woman with temporal epilepsy as her chief complaint. MRI and angiography revealed a right temporal AVM. Before surgical treatment, we assessed the dominant hemisphere with PET activation study. We performed PET scanning while the patient was playing "capping" (called "Shiritori" in Japanese), from which we subtracted PET images performed when she was in a resting state, and then we superimposed those images upon MRIs. The blood flow increased in the lef

Localization of the motor and speech zones of the cerebral cortex by functional magnetic resonance tomography.

Functional magnetic resonance tomography provides a non-invasive method for mapping the cerebral cortex. The aim of the present work was to assess the potential and suitability of this method in a series of brain disorders. Studies were performed on 32 volunteers (mean age 37.8 +/- 20.9 years) and 16 patients with tumors of the cerebral cortex (mean age 36.2 +/- 24.2 years). Initial functional images were processed by statistical methods. Computed activation maps were superimposed on anatomical images. In 89% of cases, functional magnetic resonance tomography allowed the motor cortex and Broca

Dopamine in thelimbic regions of the human brain: normal and abnormal.

1. In the human brain, DA was found in appreciable amounts in most of the examined basal telencephalic limbic regions, with the nucleus accumbens having the highest mean level (3.38 microgram/g). In the cortical areas of the limbic lobe of Broca, DA could be measured with certainty only in the parolfactory gyrus (0.35 microgram/g). 2. In patients with Parkinson's disease, the DA concentration in the parolfactory gyrus and nucleur accumbens was markedly reduced, whereas little change was seen in the olfactory areas. Quantitatively, the DA decrease in the nucleus accumbens was of the same magnit
