Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are expected to significantly enhance road safety in the future. However, until fully autonomous driving systems are widely adopted, mixed traffic with AVs and conventional vehicles (CVs) will remain a typical feature of roadways. Consequently, it is crucial to understand how roadway and built environment factors impact traffic safety in mixed traffic settings. This study proposes a joint model to analyze crash injury severity for both autonomous and conventional vehicles within a unified framework. A random parameter bivariate probit model (RBP) is used as the method

OBJECTIVE: Over the past few years, increased e-scooter ridership has raised concerns about the growing number of injury accidents involving e-scooters. Additionally, given the lack of appropriate e-scooter accident data, the extent to which built environment and socioeconomic factors affect e-scooter safety is unclear. In consideration of these issues, this study was aimed at identifying the factors contributing to the number of e-scooter injury accidents in Austin.
METHODS: We developed zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) and zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) models on the basis of 2018 dockle

Rheumatic diseases (RD) are among the most frequent disorders in the population and the major causes of chronic pain and disability. The resulting consequences are catastrophic, leading to a significant socio-economic burden, which includes significant reductions in quality of life (QoL) and limitations in regular work and daily activities of patients. In spite of this, rheumatic diseases are often misunderstood or diagnosed late, probably due to their characteristics of silent diseases, sometimes unrecognizable to unaffected or unskilled people. Actually, it is surprising that, despite their

Traditional methods for the identification of high-risk locations rely heavily on historical crash data. Rich information generated from connected vehicles could be used to obtain surrogate safety measures (SSMs) for risk identification. Conventional SSMs such as time to collision (TTC) neglect the potential risk of car-following scenarios in which the following vehicle's speed is slightly less than or equal to the leading vehicle's but the spacing between two vehicles is relatively small that a slight disturbance would yield collision risk. To address this limitation, this study proposes time

Previous research has examined the potential of exposure to greenspaces to reduce maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, such as repetitive negative thinking, and to foster connectedness with non-human nature. However, research comparing green and urban built environments often primarily attributes the benefits of greenspace exposure to their positive features, without explicitly addressing road traffic noise as a potential stressor in urban settings. This study investigated how 30-minute walks in forests and urban built environments with varying levels of road traffic noise in Zürich, Swi

The violation activity of non-motorized vehicles riding in motorized vehicle lanes interferes roadway traffic serious, as it can not only seriously depreciate the efficiency of motorized vehicle traffic, but also raise possibility of triggering traffic accidents. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate intrinsic features of unlawful non-motorized vehicles' violation behaviors of riding on motorized vehicle lanes. The binary logistic regression model was proposed to find inherent reasons of triggering such misbehaviors. The misbehaviors of non-motorized vehicles (including regular

INTRODUCTION: Pedestrian accessibility to neighborhood infrastructure is associated with Physical Activity (PA), yet the built environment is often evaluated as separate facility types, while accessibility measures may not jointly capture population demand and topographic walking burden. This study therefore examined PA in relation to a composite Active Living Infrastructure (ALI) measure that integrates five facility types and applies a Topography-Sensitive Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (T-S2SFCA) model, which weighs facility supply against population demand while adjusting walking distanc

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are a growing public health concern. Inadequacies in neighbourhood social infrastructure can undermine social connectedness, particularly for youth, who are dependent on their local environments yet often marginalized from public spaces and city planning. Integrating citizen science with participatory action research, the Youth.hood study set out to explore how neighbourhood built environments help or hinder social connectedness from the understudied perspective of youth in under-resourced and racialized communities.
METHODS: Youth (n = 42) from thr

The current study's aim was to better understand people's feelings towards different types of natural and built green space environments in the highly urbanized "garden city" of Singapore. We examined which types of green spaces elicited positive (eudemonic) or negative (apprehensive) affective responses. A total of 288 adult residents of Singapore completed a survey that asked them to report their affective states in response to images of 10 locally different environment types and to complete measures of childhood location, frequency of visiting natural/built environments, nature connectednes

Existing research on stroke in adults highlights the role of the built environment during recovery. However, this role has been greatly overlooked in the everyday lives of children with stroke. A stroke in childhood brings substantial changes for affected individuals and their families. Special care and treatments are necessary even many years after the stroke. Although many children recover after a stroke and can lead largely normal lives, cognitive and physical impairments are not uncommon. Typical consequences of childhood stroke include one-sided weakness (hemiparesis), ataxia, seizures, a

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a prevalent nosocomial pathogen and a significant reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes in residential and built environments. It is also widespread in various indoor and outdoor settings, including sewage, surface waters, soil, recreational waters (both treated and untreated), and industrial effluents. Surveillance efforts for P. aeruginosa are primarily focused on hospitals rather than built environments. However, evidence links multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa of human origin with activity in built environments and hospital settings. Consequently, tracking t

The degree of corrosion of the built cultural heritage site is examined considering the changes in air pollution trends during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul as a case study area. Key findings indicate that restricted mobility during stringent lockdown measures contributed to a noticeable reduction in PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3. This causes a temporary decrease in the surface recession rates and corrosion depths of the materials. The maximum reduction in surface recession rate for Portland limestone and White Mansfield dolomitic sandstone reaches to 7.2% and 7.5%,

This paper investigates relationships between traverses, delays and fatalities to road users at railway level crossings in Great Britain. A 'traverse' means a passage across a level crossing by a road user, who may be a pedestrian, cyclist, or occupant of a road vehicle. The paper finds that the road users with the highest fatality rate per traverse are pedestrians at passive crossings. Their rate is about three orders of magnitude higher than that of users with the lowest risk, who are road vehicle occupants at railway-controlled crossings. The paper considers the choice between automatic and

Physical activity in adolescence is a key determinant of long-term health, yet teenage girls remain consistently less active than boys. Urban public spaces play a central role in facilitating everyday opportunities for physical activity, from informal play to organised sport. However, these spaces are not equally accessible or welcoming to all. They are sites where gendered hierarchies and norms surface, but also where other intersecting structures of inequality - such as socioeconomic background, migration status, dis/ability, and religion - shape who feels entitled to participate and who doe

The growing interest regarding the role of the living environment in healthy ageing highlights the need to investigate place-related urban features contributing to health and socio-emotional wellbeing. This study aimed to use a participatory methodology to explore the determinants of an age-friendly neighbourhood built environment that promotes or limits healthy ageing in place among seniors residing in a low-income urban community in Singapore. The study utilised photovoice and semi-structured interviews with 25 community-dwelling seniors aged 65 and above, residing in government-built public

For the elderly, walking is an important, reliable mobility option, since the elderly frequently lose their physical and/or sensory ability to drive as their age increases. However, elderly pedestrians are vulnerable on the streets and are at great risk of injury or death, when involved in a collision. This is due to not only increased frailty but also such issues as reaction speed and confidence on the streets. Therefore, pedestrian safety for older adults is a growing concern. This paper comprehensively examines the relationship between physical conditions and elderly pedestrian safety at th
