Urogenital schistosomiasis in schoolchildren in the lake zones of Kankossa and Oued Rawdha, southern Mauritania: The first parasitological and malacological survey.

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma haematobium is a major public health problem in Mauritania, but little is known about its epidemiology in many areas of the country, particularly in the lake zones. The objectives of the present parasitological and malacological study were to assess the prevalence and intensity of urogenital schistosomiasis among school children in Kankossa and Oued Rawdha lakes, southern Mauritania, and determine the species of intermediate host snails and the prevalence of snails with schistosome. METHODS: A school-based epidemiological survey was co

Use of sentinel snails for the detection of Schistosoma haematobium transmission on Zanzibar and observations on transmission patterns.

Urogenital schistosomiasis is an important public health issue in Zanzibar. Transmission of the parasite to the human population is related to the distribution of the intermediate snail host, Bulinus globosus. We measured B. globosus abundance and Schistosoma haematobium prevalence within snails in a series of naturally occurring populations and compared prevalence detected by observing cercarial shedding for patent infections, and by PCR using DraI repeat. A total of 2146 B. globosus were collected throughout the study period from 2003 to 2007; of these 85 (3.96%) were shedding cercariae. The

Chemotherapy-based control of schistosomiasis haematobia. 3. Snail studies monitoring the effect of chemotherapy on transmission in the Msambweni area, Kenya.

Regular snail sampling was performed at 40 sites, representing the principal snail habitats, during a 4 year chemotherapy programme targetted at school-children in the Msambweni area of the coastal plain of Kenya. Populations of Bulinus africanus group snails, primarily from pools, showed seasonal variations, dropping when sites dried out and rising when they were refilled by the rains. Transmission, judged by the recovery of snails shedding typical fucocercous cercariae, continued throughout the treatment period at very low levels (less than 1% of the snails collected were infected) with peak

Persistence of schistosomal transmission linked to the Cavu river in southern Corsica since 2013.

Seven cases of urogenital schistosomiasis occurred in Corsica in 2015 and 2016. The episodes were related to exposure to the same river and involved the same parasite strain as an outbreak with 106 cases in summer 2013. The connection calls for further investigations on the presence of an animal reservoir and the survival of infested snails during winter. However, recontamination of the river from previously infected bathers remains the most likely hypothesis.

New insights into the transmission biology of urinary schistosomiasis in Zanzibar.

A better understanding of the transmission biology of urinary schistosomiasis in Zanzibar, Tanzania was only possible after the development of molecular DNA markers for identification of Bulinus africanus group snails, the potential intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium. Hitherto, identification of natural populations of B. globosus and B. nasutus was problematic and the intermediate host status and distribution of either species remained speculative. By recourse to molecular markers, snail distribution maps could be drawn, revealing an allopatric distribution and, more importantly, le

Schistosoma haematobium infection among Ethiopian prisoners of war (1977-1988) returning from Somalia.

Fifty Ethiopian male prisoners of war aged 20-34 years returning from Somalia were examined at the Schistosomiasis Diagnostic Laboratory of the Institute of Pathobiology, Addis Abeba University, Addis Abeba in 1988. Medical history was obtained and their urine was examined by the filtration technique. Recovered eggs of S. haematobium were allowed to hatch as a test for viability. Positive patients were treated with praziquantel at a single dose of 40mg per kg. 94% of the prisoners gave history of haematuria and 96% gave history of treatment for schistosomiasis while in Somalia. S. haematobium

[Specifics of the epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis in Mauritius].

Early observations on this disease were made in Mauritius by Chapotin (1812) before the discovery of Schistosoma haematobium. Bulinus cernicus, the snail intermediate host, one of the nine species within the B. forskali group, is restricted to the island and the disease is not occurring in the neighbouring islands of La Reunion and Rodrigues. Under laboratory conditions, the snail susceptibility to the Mauritian strain of S. haematobium has been demonstrated. But the infection rate of the snail remains very low and the transmission of the disease is sporadic except in three foci. Its occurrenc

Inland valley swamp rice development: malaria, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis in south central Sierra Leone.

The prevalence of malaria, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis was determined in 1,106 residents of five villages in the Moyamba District, Southern Sierra Leone, to determine whether inland valley swamp (IVS) development was associated with changes in the prevalence of malaria, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis in these villages. These parasitic diseases were studied in four villages receiving IVS, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) assistance and in one village not receiving FAO assistance. Malaria was the most prevalent infection, detected in 42.6% of the persons examined, followed by

Endemicity, seasonality and focality of transmission of human schistosomiasis in 3 communities in southwestern Nigeria.

The pattern of transmission of human schistosomiasis was studied in 3 communities in southwestern Nigeria. The prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium in school children aged 5-16 years in the 3 communities was 76.2, 70.3 and 66.4%, respectively. The percentage of infected children harbouring heavy infections (greater than 50 eggs/10 ml urine) in the 3 communities was 75.5, 69.2 and 48.1% with a prevalence of visible haematuria among the heavily infected children of 29.5, 19.4 and 24.3%, respectively. Bulinus globosus, the snail host for S. haematobium, was found in all 7 sites sampled. The popu

Potential Biological Control of Schistosomiasis by Fishes in the Lower Senegal River Basin.

More than 200 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with schistosome parasites. Transmission of schistosomiasis occurs when people come into contact with larval schistosomes emitted from freshwater snails in the aquatic environment. Thus, controlling snails through augmenting or restoring their natural enemies, such as native predators and competitors, could offer sustainable control for this human disease. Fishes may reduce schistosomiasis transmission directly, by preying on snails or parasites, or indirectly, by competing with snails for food or by reducing availability of macro

Trematode-associated morbidity and mortality of tadpoles in Israel.

Amphibians stand at the forefront of the global biodiversity crisis. The causes of their decline are diverse and include a rise in amphibian malformations due to various factors, especially trematode infection. However, linking amphibian mortality and morbidity with trematode infection has proven to be challenging due to the complex life cycle of the trematodes and the fact that trematodes are nonfastidious in their choice of definitive hosts. In Israel, the decline in local amphibian populations has been mostly attributed to the loss and degradation of wetlands and riparian habitats. Recently

Control of schistosome-transmitting snails in Kenya by the North American crayfish Procambarus clarkii.

Snail-transmitted trematode parasites such as schistosomes and liver flukes assume considerable medical and veterinary significance in tropical Africa. We have observed a strong negative association between the presence of medically important pulmonate snails and the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in freshwater habitats in Kenya. This crayfish, introduced into Kenya around 1970, readily consumes these snails in the laboratory. Field enclosure experiments indicate that crayfish exert a significant negative impact on the abundance of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host of the human blood

Unisexual infections with Schistosoma haematobium in the white mouse.

In unisexual infections with an Iranian strain of Schistosoma haematobium in white mice, female worms matured normally and deposited eggs in the liver but these eggs did not contain miracidia. Both female and male worms grew to more than half the length of corresponding mated worms in bisexual infections, and males acquired the normal number of testes.

Effect of the Aswan High Dam on prevalence of schistosomiasis in Egypt.

An increase in the prevalence of schistomiasis in Egypt, as a result of the Aswan High Dam, has for long time been predicted because of reclamation of land and conversion of annual flooding (basin irrigation) into perennial irrigation in Upper Egypt. Two aspects, neglected in the predictions, have been investigated in the present study, and these are: the ecological changes, relevant to the transmission of the disease, in the Nile itself, and those in irrigation canals and drains in areas which had been under perennial irrigation before the constriction of the dam. The findings indicate that t

Genitourinary schistosomiasis among pre-primary schoolchildren in a rural community within the Cross River Basin, Nigeria.

In Africa, most schistosomiasis control programmes defined the age 5-19 years as the target population for nationwide control through the school systems, excluding the under fives. A study was therefore undertaken to determine the prevalence and intensity of genitourinary schistosomiasis in children aged 0-5 years (pre-primary) in Adim, a rural and endemic community within the Cross River Basin, Nigeria. Of the 126 children examined, 25 (19.8%) were infected with Schistosoma haematobium, with no significant difference (P > 0.05) in infection rates between boys (21.1%) and girls (18.2%). Both p

This study was undertaken to evaluate the current status of shistosomiasis in the Nkolmébanga region (Lékié) of Cameroon, previously determined to be a mixed zone harboring both Schistosoma mansoni and S. intercalatum. Study involved both malacology with collection and identification of freshwater snails in four waterpools and parasitology with collection and analysis of stools from schoolchildren. Five species of freshwater snails were identified including two that were intermediate host of Schistosomes, i.e., Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus forskalii. Only B. pfeifferi species collected f
