Development of Bullying and Victimization: An Examination of Risk and Protective Factors in a High-Risk Sample.

This prospective longitudinal study from birth to late adolescence investigated how early risk predicted subsequent aggression in middle childhood and bullying perpetration, bullying victimization, and violence victimization in adolescence. In addition, the moderating role of protective factors (i.e., maternal sensitivity, positive peers, and school connectedness) on these associations were examined. Caregiver-infant dyads (N = 216; 72% Black/African American) were recruited as part of a longitudinal study on substance exposed youth. Data using multiple methods and informants (observations, in

Stability of bullying and internalizing problems among adolescents with ASD, ID, or typical development.

BACKGROUND: It is known that children with disabilities, especially adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are at increased risk for victimization. However, little is known about the impact of victimization over time. AIMS: Primary aims included identifying to what extent risk factors (i.e., internalizing behavior problems and conflict in friendship) related to bullying victimization over time. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In-depth interviews conducted separately with 15-year-olds with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability (ID), or typical development (TD) and their mo

Traditional and cyber bullying and sexual harassment: A longitudinal assessment of risk and protective factors.

Adolescents engage in bullying and sexual harassment perpetration both in-person and online. Yet, little is known about the overlap of traditional (in-person) and cyber bullying and sexual harassment perpetration. The present study assessed the co-occurrence of these forms of aggression in high school and identified middle school predictors based on participants' perceptions of factors across the social ecology. Racially diverse middle and high school students (n = 3549) were surveyed over four time points from Spring 2008 to Spring 2013. A latent class analysis was used to identify classes of

The Role of Psychological Stress Reactions in the Longitudinal Relation Between Workplace Bullying and Turnover.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between workplace bullying and change of job/unemployment, and to investigate whether psychological stress reactions constitute a potential pathway linking workplace bullying and change of job/unemployment. METHODS: We used questionnaire data on workplace bullying and psychological stress reactions and register data on change of job/unemployment. We applied a multiple pathway approach to estimate the proportion of the association between workplace bullying and subsequent change of job/unemployment that was potentially mediated by psychological stress

Childhood maltreatment and Chinese adolescents' bullying and defending: The mediating role of moral disengagement.

In the present study, we tested the mediating role of moral disengagement in the effect of childhood maltreatment on bullying and defending. We also examined whether the mediating effect of moral disengagement differed between girls and boys, early and middle adolescents, as well as only and non-only children. Five hundred and fifty-two Chinese adolescents participated in this study. The results indicated that the prevalence rates of physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect were 4.0%, 40.0%, 10.5%, and 27.9%, respectively. Path analysis showed that moral disenga

Being bullied and feeling ashamed: Implications for eating psychopathology and depression in adolescent girls.

The current study examined the associations between peer victimization, body image shame, self-criticism, self-reassurance, depressive symptoms and eating psychopathology in 609 female adolescents. Correlational analyses showed that being the victim of bullying was positively associated with body image shame, self-criticism, with low self-reassurance, depressive symptoms and eating psychopathology. A path analysis indicated that victimization experiences were associated with increased depressive symptoms partially through increased levels of body image shame, and a severe form of self-criticis

Bullying at school as a predictor of delinquency, violence and other anti-social behaviour in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Although bullying at school is an important topic, its long-term relation to anti-social development is rarely investigated. AIM: To study the relation between bullying in youth and anti-social outcomes in adulthood. METHODS: A group of 63 males (bullies and victims over-sampled) from the Erlangen-Nuremberg Bullying Study were investigated at ages 15 and 25. Bullying was assessed with the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire. Outcome measures included self-reported delinquency, violence, aggressiveness, drug use, impulsivity and psychopathy. In addition to bivariate correlations, hi

Gender differences in the assessment, stability, and correlates to bullying roles in middle school children.

The current study investigated bullying behaviors in 284 school children in the fourth through seventh grades at the time of the initial assessment. Peer ratings of bullying behavior were obtained at the end of the spring semester of one school year and at the end of the fall semester of the next school year. Importantly, peer ratings were obtained by assessing not only the level at which participants actually bully other students but also whether participants help bullies to hurt the victim (assister), encourage bullies (reinforce), or help the victim of bullying (defender). Our results did n

Association between bullying at work and mental disorders: gender differences in the Italian people.

BACKGROUND: In the last few years the international literature has shown an increasing attention for the work as life-event stressor, for its organizational characteristics as well as for job insecurity and interpersonal conflicts. METHODS: We have studied 707 subjects who approached the Work Psychopathology Medical Centre of Naples to evaluate the DSM IV diagnoses and the degree of bullying at the workplace according to Leymann's definition. Two groups, with high and with low severity of bullying, were compared, mainly in relation to gender differences. RESULTS: The more frequent diagnoses

Parental maltreatment and emotion dysregulation as risk factors for bullying and victimization in middle childhood.

Examined whether children who were maltreated by caregivers were more likely to bully others and to be at risk for victimization by peers. An additional focus was to investigate emotion's role in bullying and victimization among children at risk. Participants were 169 maltreated and 98 nonmaltreated boys and girls attending a summer day camp for inner-city children. As predicted, maltreated children were more likely than nonmaltreated children to bully other children. Bullying was especially prevalent among abused children who experienced maltreating acts of commission (physical or sexual abus

Not all wounds are visible: Peer bullying and psychopathology in child and adolescent psychotherapy outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Bullying poses a major risk for poor mental health. While findings from the general population highlight harmful effects of bullying, data from clinical samples with diverse diagnoses and evidence-based diagnostic methods is rare. This study aimed at exploring the association between psychopathology and active bullying involvement in child and adolescent psychotherapy outpatients. METHODS: The preregistered study ( https://aspredicted.org/VYW_9TT ) included data from N = 719 outpatients aged 6-20 years from a German child and adolescent psychotherapy centre. Current experiences as

Retrospective Bullying Victimization and Loneliness in Undergraduates: Mediating Roles of Emotion Suppression and Rumination.

Childhood bullying victimization experiences contribute to higher levels of loneliness in adulthood, but the mechanism underlying this relation is unclear. Potentially, individual differences in emotion regulation may underlie the relation between childhood bullying victimization and adult loneliness. The present study examined whether tendencies towards emotion suppression and rumination mediated the relation between retrospective bullying experiences and current loneliness in young adults. Undergraduate participants (N = 289, Mage = 19.09 years, SDage = 2.89 years) completed self-reported qu
