Crania with mutilated facial skeletons: a new ritual treatment in an early pre-pottery Neolithic B cranial cache at Tell Qarassa North (South Syria).

The removal of crania from burials, their ritual use and their disposal, generally in cranial caches, are the most particular characteristics of the funerary ritual in the transition to the Neolithic in the Near East. Despite the importance of this ritual, detailed studies of cranial caches are rare. This funerary ritual has traditionally been interpreted as a form of ancestor-veneration. However, this study of the cranial caches found at the site of Tell Qarassa North, South Syria, dated in the second half of the ninth millennium BC, questions this interpretation. The 12 crania, found in two

Dispelling disaster myths about dead bodies and disease: the role of scientific evidence and the media.

For decades, after nearly every natural disaster, fear of disease has encouraged communities, local authorities, and governments to rapidly dispose of the bodies of the victims without first identifying them. In May 2004 this journal published the first-ever review article to comprehensively assess the scientific evidence on the infectious disease risks of dead bodies following natural disasters, along with an editorial commenting on the persistence of myths concerning the dangers allegedly posed by dead bodies. This paper assesses the impact that the review article and the editorial have had

Brief communication: Conjoined twins at angel mounds? an ancient DNA perspective.

Conjoined twins are born when a single fertilized egg partially splits into two fetuses. A hypothetical case of infant conjoined twins from Angel Mounds, a Middle Mississippian site (A.D. 1050-1400) on the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana, was discovered in 1941. Morphological analysis does not rule out the field interpretation of this double burial as twins. Ancient mitochondrial DNA recovered from both infants demonstrates that they were not maternal relatives, and hence that they cannot have been conjoined twins.

Death in the Arctic - the tragic fate of members of the Franklin expedition (1845).

In May 1845 HMS Terror and HMS Erebus left England under the command of Sir John Franklin to find the Northwest Passage linking the north Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The ships had been specially equipped for arctic conditions with central heating, auxiliary steam engines and reinforced steel bows to cut through the ice, however, despite these modern additions neither the vessels nor any of the 129 crew members would ever return. Recently the wrecks of the ships have been located in the waters around King William Island, Nunavut, Canada. Numerous theories have been advanced to explain the deat

A comparison of surface features on submerged and non-submerged bone using scanning electron microscopy.

Skeletal remains are excellent sources of information regarding the deceased individual and the taphonomic history of their body. However, the accuracy of this information is governed by our ability to interpret features on the surface of a bone. Little research in this respect has been carried out on remains found in aquatic environments. This study compares damage features created on the surface of modern and archaeological bone found in a seawater environment, to surface features present on unmodified bone, archaeological bone, pathological bone and burned bone. Results show that no similar

Internal hernia after laparoscopic sacrocervicopexy.

Whether the peritoneum covering the mesh used in laparoscopic procedures to treat pelvic organ prolapse needs to be sutured is controversial. Herein is reported a case of small bowel obstruction through the mesh, which was sutured at the level of the sacral promontory. The objective of this case report was to emphasize the importance of peritonization, or "burial," of the mesh during these laparoscopic procedures to avert bowel herniation. Furthermore, the need is stressed for a low operative threshold in patients who have undergone such laparoscopic procedures and who demonstrate symptoms of

A cellulose carbamate-grafted sodium alginate semi-interpenetrating network fertilizer with enhanced water retention and controlled nutrient release for sandy soil improvement.

To address agricultural water shortage and low fertilizer utilization efficiency, this study developed a biodegradable carbamate cellulose‑sodium alginate/urea-formaldehyde resin hydrogel (CCS-NaAlg/UF) with dual water retention and nutrient slow-release functions. The material was prepared via chemical crosslinking with citric acid combined with physical crosslinking by urea-formaldehyde resin. Its structure was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and SEM. Water absorption kinetics, cyclic stability, and soil water retention were evaluated, while nitrogen slow-release characteristics were as

Carbon Isotopic Characteristics and Evolution of Coal-Measure Gas in the Yushe-Wuxiang Block, Qinshui Basin, China.

This study experimentally analyzed gas composition and methane carbon isotopes obtained from coal, shale, and silty mudstone. Subsequently, by integrating data on thermal maturity, burial depth, gas content, and geological structural characteristics, the geochemical characteristics and genesis mechanisms of coal-measure gas were systematically investigated. The results show that coal-measure gas in the study area is dominated by CH4, with an average concentration of 90.34% and extremely high drying coefficients. A notable negative correlation between CH4 and N2 concentrations indicates atmosph

Forensic Metabolomics: Enhancing PMI Estimation through Porcine Bone Tissue Profiling.

The estimation of the post-mortem interval (PMI) in forensic skeletal remains is extremely challenging, as traditional morphological methods lose their effectiveness and accuracy as decomposition progresses. To address this issue, this study utilizes metabolomics to investigate the biochemical changes affecting bone tissue during the decomposition process. Fragments of pig mandibles were buried in an open grassland field at varying depths (0, 10, 30, and 50 cm) and collected every month up to 6 months. Bone metabolites were extracted using a single-phase methanol-water protocol, and both gas c

Detection and strain typing of ancient Mycobacterium leprae from a medieval leprosy hospital.

Nine burials excavated from the Magdalen Hill Archaeological Research Project (MHARP) in Winchester, UK, showing skeletal signs of lepromatous leprosy (LL) have been studied using a multidisciplinary approach including osteological, geochemical and biomolecular techniques. DNA from Mycobacterium leprae was amplified from all nine skeletons but not from control skeletons devoid of indicative pathology. In several specimens we corroborated the identification of M. leprae with detection of mycolic acids specific to the cell wall of M. leprae and persistent in the skeletal samples. In five cases,

A simplified sample preparation for hair and skin proteins towards the application of archaeological fur and leather.

Conventional protocols for proteomics analysis usually start by extracting or solubilizing the proteins from their substrates. This step can be challenging for archaeological proteins, when they are heavily contaminated or decayed. The remains of animal fur/leather objects from an early medieval burial in Trossingen (580 CE) from Southwest Germany were submitted to proteomics analysis for species identification. One leather sample (TS3) yielded enough proteins to be identified as cow using a urea-based extraction (method "U"), confirming the microscopic identification. But two other samples (T

Absence of Yersinia pestis-specific DNA in human teeth from five European excavations of putative plague victims.

This study reports the results of a collaborative study undertaken by two independent research groups to (a) confirm recent PCR-based detection of Yersinia pestis DNA in human teeth from medieval plague victims in France, and (b) to extend these observations over five different European burial sites believed to contain plague victims dating from the late 13th to 17th centuries. Several different sets of primers were used, including those previously documented to yield positive results on ancient DNA extracts. No Y. pestis DNA could be amplified from DNA extracted from 108 teeth belonging to 61

[No, Mozart was not trigonocephalic].

The precise circumstances of Mozart's death and burial remain unclear at now. In this, the ownership of the skull supposedly belonging to the great musician and deposed at the Salzburg Museum is still a matter of controversy. A comparison between the cephalometric dental and cranial characteristics of this skull and portraits of Mozart, either genuine or reconstituted, has been established. The hypothesis of a trigonocephaly reported initially by Puech and Tichy seems to need modification to the benefit of a regional brachycephaly. On the other hand our study does confirm the great probability

Green Preparation of Straw Fiber Reinforced Hydrolyzed Soy Protein Isolate/Urea/Formaldehyde Composites for Biocomposite Flower Pots Application.

The effects of soil burial on the biodegradation of biocomposite flower pots (BFP) made from straw fiber (SF) and hydrolyzed soy protein isolate/urea/formaldehyde (HSPI/U/F) copolymer resin were studied in detail. The microstructure, crystallinity, functional groups, mechanical, degradation and thermal property of the prepared SF with HSPI/U/F copolymer resin have been studied, and the degradation mechanism was also elucidated. XRD results showed that the bond breakage between SF and HSPI/U/F copolymer resin induced a decrease in relative degradation-resistant crystal structures. FTIR spectra

Transmission dynamics of Ebola virus disease and intervention effectiveness in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is the most severely affected country by an unprecedented outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa. Although successfully contained, the transmission dynamics of EVD and the impact of interventions in the country remain unclear. We established a database of confirmed and suspected EVD cases from May 2014 to September 2015 in Sierra Leone and mapped the spatiotemporal distribution of cases at the chiefdom level. A Poisson transmission model revealed that the transmissibility at the chiefdom level, estimated as the average number of secondary infections caused by a patie

The Accuracy of the Osteological Sexing of Cremated Human Remains: A Test Based on Grave Goods from East Lithuanian Barrows.

The accuracy of the sex determination of cremated human remains is one of the vital parameters for archaeologists and skeletal anthropologists dealing with cremations. Few studies have so far aimed at testing it. In the present paper, the accuracy of the sexing techniques was assessed by paralleling biological sex (identified morphologically) to gender (presumed on the basis of the grave goods which accompanied the deceased). A collection of cremated bones from East Lithuanian barrows (c. fourth/fifth--eleventh/twelfth centuries AD) was employed. The fragmentary nature and poor state of the bo

Art and the Audiogram: How Skillful Observation Provides Insights to the History, Present, and Future.

Although simple, audiograms are a dynamic tool that, much like fine art, can be used by experts to decipher the history, present, and probable future of its subject. Through close comparison with El Greco's Burial of the Count Orgaz, a very well-known painting for its temporal complexity, a sample audiogram is examined through an artistic lens. That intimate relationship with time that El Greco's piece and audiograms share offers not only a layered interpretive narrative but also a humanities-based perspective on how to approach diagnostic testing.
