COMPARISON OF KETAMINE-MIDAZOLAM AND KETAMINE-MIDAZOLAM-BUTORPHANOL PREMEDICATION PRIOR TO SEVOFLURANE ANESTHESIA IN WOODCHUCKS (MARMOTA MONAX).

Cardiovascular disease is a frequent cause of death in the critically endangered Vancouver Island marmots (Marmota vancouverensis). This warrants the use of anesthetic protocols with minimal cardiovascular adverse effects. In this study, 12 adult male woodchucks (Marmota monax) were used as models for Vancouver Island marmots. The objective was to compare the physiological effects of two premedication protocols during induction and maintenance of anesthesia with sevoflurane. The two premedications were ketamine 10 mg/kg and midazolam 0.5 mg/kg (KM) or ketamine 10 mg/kg, midazolam 0.5 mg/kg, an

Effect of butorphanol, midazolam or ketamine on romifidine based sedation in horses during standing cheek tooth removal.

BACKGROUND: Standing surgery, especially dental procedures, are commonly performed in horses. This leads to an increasing demand for reliable sedation protocols. Therefore, it was the purpose of this study to investigate the influence of butorphanol, midazolam or ketamine on romifidine based sedation in horses during cheek tooth removal. METHODS: Forty horses presented for tooth extraction were divided in four groups using matched pair randomization. Group R was sedated with romifidine (bolus 0.03 mg/kg, followed by a constant rate infusion (CRI) 0.05 mg/kg/h) and group RB with romifidine (sa

Comparison of Butorphanol-Azaperone-Medetomidine and Nalbuphine-Medetomidine-Azaperone for Immobilization of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM) is commonly used for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) immobilization in captive and free-ranging populations. It is a federally regulated controlled substance requiring stringent regulatory compliance, complicating field application. A prescription-only drug combination, nalbuphine-medetomidine-azaperone® (NalMed-A) provides a less-regulated alternative for use by wildlife professionals. Efficacy and safety of these drug combinations for immobilization of deer have not been compared in a controlled trial, and reports of dose-specific effects o

Intravenous butorphanol improves cardiopulmonary parameters in game-ranched white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) immobilized with etorphine and azaperone.

Abstract We immobilized 47 white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) for dehorning with 1-4 mg of etorphine HCl, 10-40 mg of azaperone, and 7,500 IU of hyaluronidase, at a game ranch in South Africa in November 2012. Forty-four received butorphanol intravenously 5 min after recumbency, at the rate of 10 mg of butorphanol per 1 mg of etorphine, and three animals did not. When possible, blood gas and physiologic parameters were measured immediately before butorphanol administration and 10 min later. Statistically significant improvements were observed, with a reduction in pH, partial pressure of

The Analgesic Efficacy and Safety of Intramuscular Hydromorphone Versus Butorphanol for Acute Pain in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Acute pain represents a distressing encounter for most patients in the emergency department (ED), profoundly impacting their quality of life. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and morphine represent the most widely utilized analgesics; however, their clinical application in acute pain management is limited by their delayed onset of pharmacological action or significant risk of addiction. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the analgesic efficacy and safety of intramuscular hydromorphone and butorphanol in patients with acute pain in the ED. METHODS: This randomize

Dexmedetomidine or Butorphanol for Co-Induction of General Anaesthesia with Propofol in Unpremedicated Healthy Dogs: Clinical and Echocardiographic Assessment.

High induction doses of propofol (PPF) may cause adverse effects. Co-induction protocols can reduce doses and enhance the beneficial profile of each drug. This study compared the induction quality, clinical, and echocardiographic effects of two rapid co-inductions in healthy, unpremedicated dogs. Baseline cardiorespiratory and echocardiographic variables were recorded. Dogs randomly received rapid intravenous PPF (2.2 mg/kg) with either dexmedetomidine (3 µg/kg) (PROPODEX; n = 12) or butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg) (PROPOBUT; n = 12). Anaesthesia for castration of 2 - 8 day old piglets using dexmedetomidine--alfaxalone with or without butorphanol or pethidine.

Current intramuscular anaesthesia for piglet castration, involving azaperone and ketamine, is unsatisfactory in terms of anaesthesia and recovery. This study aimed to evaluate different intramuscular drug combinations to achieve anaesthesia without movement or vocalisation during surgery, while maintaining haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2) >90 % and excitation-free induction and recovery, with piglets standing within two hours of drug administration. Alfaxalone and dexmedetomidine were administered to 19 piglets at starting doses of 2 mg/kg and 25 µg/kg, respectively. If two consecutive pig
