Analysis of CD4+ and CD8+ T Lymphocytes and Expression of Immune Checkpoint Proteins (PD-1 and PD-L1) in Primary and Persistent Periapical Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent periapical lesions (PePL) represent a clinical challenge because of their inadequate response to conventional endodontic therapies. Studies indicate differences in immunoinflammatory mechanisms between primary periapical lesions (PrPL) and PePL but the findings remain conflicting. This study aimed to evaluate CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes and the expression of immune checkpoint proteins (programmed cell death protein 1 [PD-1] and its ligand [PD-L1]) in PrPL and PePL, correlating the findings with the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and pattern of the cystic epit

Extrinsic allergic alveolitis: comparative study of the bronchoalveolar lavage profiles and radiological presentation.

INTRODUCTION: Extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) is an immunologically mediated interstitial lung disease. The abnormalities in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid cell counts are almost always seen in patients with EAA according to the stage of the disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to find out how the BAL lymphocyte count, percentage of lymphocytes expressing HLA-DR, CD4/CD8 T cell ratio in BAL fluid, and the concentration of immunoglobulin G in serum correspond to the inflammatory activity of the disease. METHODS: The study included 14 patients with EAA. BAL fluid samples

Analysis of Lymphocyte Subpopulations and Cytokines in COVID-19-Associated Pneumonia and Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: The 2019 novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 caused large outbreaks of COVID-19 worldwide. COVID-19 resembles community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Our aim was to identify lymphocyte subpopulations to distinguish between COVID-19 and CAP. METHODS: We compared the peripheral blood lymphocytes and their subsets in 296 patients with COVID-19 and 130 patients with CAP. Parameters for independent prediction of COVID-19 were calculated by logistic regression. RESULTS: The main lymphocyte subpopulations (CD3+CD4+, CD16+CD56+, and CD4+/CD8+ ratio) and cytokines (TNF-α and IFN-γ) of COVID-19 patie

Outcome of extracorporeal photopheresis in mycosis fungoides patients is not predicted by quotients of systemic immune-inflammatory biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Systemic immune-inflammatory biomarkers (SIIBs) have not been studied in mycosis fungoides (MF) patients undergoing extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP). OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine whether recently proposed SIIBs are suitable to predict ECP treatment outcome and overall prognosis of patients with MF. METHODS: Twenty-nine MF patients were retrospectively evaluated who had undergone ECP. SIIBs included neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, and pan-immune-inflammation value. RESULTS: Lymphocyte count (P = .021), CD4

Biphasic rate of CD4+ cell count decline during progression to AIDS correlates with HIV-1 phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinetics of decline of CD4+ lymphocytes in HIV-1-infected asymptomatic homosexual men. METHODS: CD4+ lymphocytes were enumerated in a cohort of 187 HIV-1-infected initially asymptomatic homosexual men seen at 3-month intervals over 5 years. During follow-up, 45 men progressed to AIDS (excluding cases presenting with Kaposi's sarcoma). Correlation between rate of CD4+ cell decline and presence of a particular HIV-1 biological phenotype was analysed in 43 participants. RESULTS: CD4+ cell counts declined slowly and continuously in HIV-1-seropositive men who remained

Characteristics of T-lymphocyte subsets in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome complicated with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Immunosuppressed patients often acquire invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). In recent years, the incidence of patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) complicated with IPA has increased. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the counts of T-lymphocyte subsets in patients with SFTS combined with IPA and explore their predictive value for IPA infection in SFTS patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all patients with SFTS admitted to Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between January 2016 and August 2022. The patients were divi

Peripheral White Blood Cell Dynamics as a Biomarker of Coronavirus Disease Severity.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread vaccination efforts against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, variants with increased transmissibility or immune evasion continue to emerge, posing a considerable challenge. Understanding the immunological factors associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) progression is essential for improving patient management and treatment strategies. We explored the dynamic changes in the peripheral white blood cell (WBC) profile, including T lymphocyte subsets, to assess their potential as predictors of disease severity and progression. METHODS: Two hund

[A case of both cryptococcal pneumonia and meningitis with idiopathic CD4+T-lymphocytopenia followed up over a long time].

A 62-year-old man had felt cold-like symptoms for 2 months. He visited a clinic for a health check in late July 1998 and chest X-ray film showed an infiltrative shadow in the left middle and lower lung fields. Next day he had a fever of 38.3 degrees C and felt breathless. Six days thereafter he had a cough, thick head and felt fatigue. Chest X-ray films showed other infiltrative shadows in the bilateral upper lung fields. He worked in a race track and was exposed to pigeons and seabirds at that time. Culture of sputum grew Cryptococcus neoformans. He was admitted and was treated with intraveno

Increased naive CD4+ and B lymphocyte subsets are associated with body mass loss and drive relative lymphocytosis in anorexia nervosa patients.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an atypical form of malnutrition with peculiar changes in the immune system. We hypothesized that different lymphocyte subsets are differentially affected by malnutrition in AN, and thus, our aim was to investigate the influence of body mass loss on the variability of lymphocyte subsets in AN patients. A group of 66 adolescent female patients, aged 12-17 years, referred for their first episode of either AN or feeding or eating disorders not elsewhere classified were studied upon admission (46 AN-restricting subtype, 11 AN-binge/purging subtype, and 9 feeding or eating

Focal mycobacterial lymphadenitis following initiation of protease-inhibitor therapy in patients with advanced HIV-1 disease.

BACKGROUND: Inhibitors of HIV-1 protease produce a rapid decrease in plasma HIV-1 RNA, with concomitant increases in CD4 T-helper lymphocyte counts. The main side-effects of the protease inhibitors currently in use include gastrointestinal disturbances, paraesthesias, hyperbilirubinaemia, and nephrolithiasis. The increasing use of these agents in patients with advanced HIV-1 infection and CD4 counts of less than 50 cells/microL may be associated with unforeseen adverse effects not observed in earlier studies of patients with higher CD4 counts. METHODS: Five HIV-infected patients with baseline

Early immune system alterations in patients with septic shock.

This study aims to investigate the early changes in the immune systems of patients with septic shock. A total of 243 patients with septic shock were included in this study. The patients were classified as survivors (n = 101) or nonsurvivors (n = 142). Clinical laboratories perform tests of the immune system's function. Each indicator was studied alongside healthy controls (n = 20) of the same age and gender as the patients. A comparative analysis of every two groups was conducted. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify mortality risk factors that ar

Hierarchical pattern of mucosal candida infections in HIV-seropositive women.

PURPOSE: Candida is the most common cause of opportunistic mucosal infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive women. We had observed an apparent correlation between the severity of immunodeficiency and the site of mucosal candida infection. The current study was designed to determine whether significant correlations existed between the sites of mucosal candida infection and the degree of immunodeficiency, as determined by subsets of lymphocyte populations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The subjects in this study are 66 HIV-seropositive women evaluated by members of the Brown University

[Retinal lesions in HIV seropositive patients].

118 patients with HIV infection underwent complete ophthalmologic examination to detect the presence of any eye pathology. The study was intended to show a correlation between such pathology and the total CD4 + lymphocyte count considered to be indicative of the immunologic status. The most frequently encountered lesions were cotton-wool patches, vascular congestion, hemorrhages, chorioretinitis, segmental vasculitis and optic disc pallar. Almost all the patients with ocular manifestations, also had a CD4 + count of less than 200/mm3 which suggest that ocular lesions are of bad prognostic sign

Risk factors for cotton-wool spots and for cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

PURPOSE: To investigate the risk factors for cotton-wool spots and for cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 453 consecutive male patients with a positive serodiagnosis for HIV. The possible risk factors of age, race, absolute T-lymphocyte CD4+ count, and mode of HIV acquisition were evaluated. RESULTS: Age and race were not significant predictors of either cotton-wool spots or cytomegalovirus retinitis. Low CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts were the strongest predictor of both types of retinopathy. COVID Induced Functional Exhaustion and Persistently Reduced Lymphocytes as Vital Contributing Factors for Post-COVID Rhino-orbital and Cerebral Mucormycosis in Patients with Diabetes: Report from the Indian Sub-continent.

The current pandemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global, unanticipated public health crisis. Another emerging challenge is the prevalence of "black fungus", or mucormycosis, among patients who recovered from COVID-19 infection. A retrospective study was conducted on 12 patients in a post-COVID recovery phase who developed mucormycosis. The study parameters evaluated lymphocyte count, CD4+ T cell status, and associated systemic co-morbidities for the patient, namely diabetes. The interventions during the treatment for COVID were also recorded to include
