Symptom- and Prevention-Based Testing of COVID-19 in Nursing Home Residents: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Nursing homes (NH) residents with COVID-19 can either be tested because of presence of core symptoms (S-based) or because of transmission prevention (TP-based). The investigated study sample included all NH residents who underwent SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing between March 16, 2020 and May 31, 2020 (n = 380). Clinical symptoms, temperature, and oxygen saturation were extracted from medical records, 7 days before to 14 days after testing. COVID-19 was confirmed in 81 (21%) residents; 36 (44%) S-based and 45 (56%) TP-based: 45. Cycle threshold (CT) values did not differ between the groups. In the 7

Olfactory Cleft Opacification in COVID-19 Related Smell Loss: CT Findings and Correlation With Objective Testing.

OBJECTIVES: Besides the common symptoms of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) including fever, shortness of breath, and cough, a "sudden loss of smell" has recently been added as a diagnostic symptom. The relationship between paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) and sudden loss of smell in COVID-19 was examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups were selected for the study, the COVID-19 and the control groups. The control group consisted of 40 patients who applied to our clinic with headache and therefore underwent PNS CT. The other group consisted of 40 patients with COVID-19 wh

The Utility of Testing Serum C-reactive Protein and its Clinical Significance in COVID-19 Patients.

The new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has disclosed alarming challenges to global health. The disease demonstrates several clinical issues, from mild symptoms to severe acute respiratory-related problems, including multi-organ failure. The virus is key in COVID-19's pathogenesis, triggering different inflammatory responses. A well-known inflammatory biomarker, C-reactive protein (CRP), has become a possible diagnostic and prognostic marker in COVID-19 patients. This review aims to explain CRP

COVID-19 rapid testing in a homeless shelter: Lessons for equitable access and sustainable pandemic response.

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) faced heightened vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet little is known about how frontline homelessness service organizations navigated the public health responsibilities that shifted onto them as broader systems strained. This study provides a longitudinal qualitative analysis of on-site rapid COVID-19 testing implemented at a large Midwestern homeless shelter, examining how multi-level structural conditions shaped the feasibility, ethics, and sustainability of testing over the course of the pandemic. Using semi-structured interviews with shelt

Changes to Endemic Respiratory Virus Circulation and Testing Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and resulting countermeasures significantly disrupted the circulation of many endemic respiratory viruses. While most viruses experienced sharp declines immediately following the pandemic onset, recovery dynamics varied among species. We hypothesize that the degree of displacement in virus circulation and the time required to return to prepandemic patterns are influenced by the circulation overlap with SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: Respiratory virus testing data from nasopharyngeal specimens (2015 through May 2024) were analyzed for 6 respiratory viruses grouped int

COVID-19, infection fatality rate (IFR) implied by the serology, antibody, testing in New York City.

This paper estimates COVID-19 infection fatality rate (IFR) in early 2020 before pharmaceutical interventions were available on a large population in the United States. The better estimates of COVID-19 deaths in New York City and its high COVID-19 infection rate made it ideal to accurately estimate the IFR. Further, we analyze the deaths and infections in New York City to estimate an overall IFR for the United States of 0.86 percent.

Hypopigmentation following intradermal allergy skin testing performed as part of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine allergy evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Skin prick test (SPT) and intradermal test (IDT) are standard procedures in the allergy practice that are safe when performed. Individuals with a history of allergic reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine can undergo allergy skin testing for polyethylene glycol and polysorbate 80 to determine their eligibility for the same vaccine or a safe alternative. Hypopigmentation is an infrequent adverse effect of corticosteroids, including triamcinolone acetonide, following local and intralesional treatment. Exposure to high potency corticosteroids for a long duration and the intradermal injectio

Serological testing of blood donors to characterise the impact of COVID-19 in Melbourne, Australia, 2020.

Rapidly identifying and isolating people with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection has been a core strategy to contain COVID-19 in Australia, but a proportion of infections go undetected. We estimated SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody prevalence (seroprevalence) among blood donors in metropolitan Melbourne following a COVID-19 outbreak in the city between June and September 2020. The aim was to determine the extent of infection spread and whether seroprevalence varied demographically in proportion to reported cases of infection. The design involved stratified sampling of residual specimens from blood donors

Pre-endoscopy SARS-CoV-2 testing strategy during COVID-19 pandemic: the care must go on.

BACKGROUND: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, endoscopic societies initially recommended reduction of endoscopic procedures. In particular non-urgent endoscopies should be postponed. However, this might lead to unnecessary delay in diagnosing gastrointestinal conditions. METHODS: Retrospectively we analysed the gastrointestinal endoscopies performed at the Central Endoscopy Unit of Saarland University Medical Center during seven weeks from 23 March to 10 May 2020 and present our real-world single-centre experience with an individualized rtPCR-based pre-endoscopy SARS-CoV-2 testing strateg
