[Clinical and hygienic evaluation of the combined effect of vibration and fluoride in humans].

Hygienic evaluation of work conditions and clinical examination of workers in fluoride mines proved vibration disease to be the prevalent occupational entity in those employees. Caused by joint effects of vibration and fluor, the clinical signs in this context demonstrate short development, occupational disablement and possible connection with fluorosis. Joint effects of vibration and calcium fluoride vs. influence of the isolated hazards show more compromised functions and changes of fluor kinetics in the body.

Influence of cementum on the demineralization and remineralization processes of root surface caries in vitro.

The influence of the nature of the root surface on the demineralization and remineralization processes within artificial fluoride-treated caries lesions was investigated using microscopic and X-ray microanalytical methods. Traces of fluoride were detected in the outer parts (about 25 micrometers) of the lesions after the application of fluorides, and a high mineral content was proved for the same region by means of microanalytical calcium estimation. The location of this mineral-rich band in relation to the root surface was deeper into the root depending on the existence and thickness of a cem

Effects of life-long fluoride intake on bone measures of adolescents: a prospective cohort study.

Controversy persists concerning the impact of community water fluoridation on bone health in adults, and few studies have assessed relationships with bone at younger ages. Ecological studies of fluoride's effects showed some increase in bone mineral density of adolescents and young adults in areas with fluoridated water compared with non-fluoridated areas. However, none had individual fluoride exposure measures. To avoid ecological fallacy and reduce bias, we assessed associations of average daily fluoride intake from birth to age 15 yr for Iowa Bone Development Study cohort members with age 1

Fluoride contamination in and around selected geothermal sites in Odisha, Eastern India: assessment of ionic relations, fluoride exposure and remediation.

Fluoride contamination in groundwater is a major problem throughout the world as well as in India. High-fluoride content was reported in the hot springs of Atri and Tarbalo sites in Odisha, India, and residents of nearby villages showed the manifestations of fluorosis. Around 39% of the groundwater samples showed fluoride concentration > 1 mg/l, higher than the desirable limit specified by the WHO. The dominant chemical facies of groundwaters were ions of Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Ca-Na-Cl, which infers the lithological control over the hydrochemistry of this area. A strong correlation between fluoride a

Characterisation of a New Bioactive Glass-Containing Fluoride Varnish.

Objectives: This study characterised the bioactive properties (i.e., ion release, pH rise, and apatite formation) of a newly developed Voco Profluorid + BioMin F varnish. Three additional varnishes were investigated for comparison: Clinpro™ White Varnish (3M™, St. Paul, MN, USA), MI Varnish (GC, Tokyo, Japan), and Profluorid varnish (VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany). The Clinpro™ White and MI varnishes were chosen for comparison due to their similar composition of active ingredients. Profluorid served as a standard fluoride-only varnish reference. Methods: Dental varnish ingredients were characte

Fluoride treatment increased serum IGF-1, bone turnover, and bone mass, but not bone strength, in rabbits.

We hypothesized that fluoride partly acts by changing the levels of circulating calcium-regulating hormones and skeletal growth factors. The effects of oral fluoride on 24 female, Dutch-Belted, young adult rabbits were studied. The rabbits were divided into two study groups, one control and the other receiving about 16 mg fluoride/rabbit/day in their drinking water. After 6 months of fluoride dosing, all rabbits were euthanized and bone and blood samples were taken for analyses. Fluoride treatment increased serum and bone fluoride levels by over an order of magnitude (P < 0.001), but did not a

Efficient Removal of Fluoride from Phosphogypsum Leachate: Insights into Microscopic Mechanism of Polyferric Sulfate-Assisted Precipitation via Molecular Simulation.

Fine calcium fluoride (CaF2) particles formed during fluoride removal processes often exhibit poor aggregation and separation behavior, especially in phosphogypsum (PG) leachate with high soluble fluoride concentrations. In this study, polyferric sulfate (PFS) was employed as a coagulation aid following CaO precipitation to enhance CaF2 aggregation and solid-liquid separation, with particular focus on the underlying molecular mechanisms. Experimental results showed that the sequential addition of CaO followed by PFS significantly improved fluoride removal compared with CaO precipitation alone.

A health risk assessment for fluoride in Central Europe.

Like many elements, fluorine (which generally occurs in nature as fluoride) is beneficial to human health in trace amounts, but can be toxic in excess. The links between low intakes of fluoride and dental protection are well known; however, fluoride is a powerful calcium-seeking element and can interfere with the calcified structure of bones and teeth in the human body at higher concentrations causing dental or skeletal fluorosis. One of the main exposure routes is via drinking water and the World Health Organisation currently sets water quality guidelines for the element. In Central Europe, g

Review of fluoride removal from drinking water.

Fluoride in drinking water has a profound effect on teeth and bones. Up to a small level (1-1.5mg/L) this strengthens the enamel. Concentrations in the range of 1.5-4 mg/L result in dental fluorosis whereas with prolonged exposure at still higher fluoride concentrations (4-10mg/L) dental fluorosis progresses to skeletal fluorosis. High fluoride concentrations in groundwater, up to more than 30 mg/L, occur widely, in many parts of the world. This review article is aimed at providing precise information on efforts made by various researchers in the field of fluoride removal for drinking water. T

Dental tissue effects of fluoride.

It is now well-established that a linear relationship exists between fluoride dose and enamel fluorosis in human populations. With increasing severity, the subsurface enamel all along the tooth becomes increasingly porous (hypomineralized), and the lesion extends toward the inner enamel. In dentin, hypomineralization results in an enhancement of the incremental lines. After eruption, the more severe forms are subject to extensive mechanical breakdown of the surface. The continuum of fluoride-induced changes can best be classified by the TF index, which reflects, on an ordinal scale, the histop

Postmenopausal osteoporosis: treatment with low-dose sodium fluoride and estrogen.

Eleven menopausal patients were treated for 12 to 18 months with low-dose sodium fluoride and calcium. Six patients also received estrogen replacement. A significant increase in spine or hip bone mineral density measured by dual photon absorptiometry was observed in all patients. The estrogen-treated group had the greatest increase in bone density. Addition of estrogen seems to supplement bone gain and allow sodium fluoride to be administered in lower doses, which are easily tolerated and yet effective.

Osteopenia in rheumatology practice: pathogenesis and therapy.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis has a multifactorial pathogenesis related to decreases in bone mass, calcium intake, and circulating estrogen levels. Therapy with supplemental calcium, estrogen, fluoride, anabolic steroids, and calcitonin is discussed. Corticosteroid-induced osteopenia is in part related to a decrease in intestinal calcium absorption and therapy with supplemental vitamin D and calcium may favorably alter the outcome. The osteopenia of rheumatoid arthritis appears to be a diffuse process, with increased metabolic bone activity at sites that are remote from the areas of active synov
