Furcuncular Myiasis of the Scalp Caused by Chrysomya bezziana.

We report a rare case of furuncular myiasis in a 7-year-old boy presenting with a discharging nodule over the scalp. The report details the clinical presentation, examination findings, and dermoscopic features of furuncular myiasis. To the best of our knowledge, Chrysomya bezziana has never been reported to cause furuncular myiasis. In vivo and ex vivo dermoscopy features help in diagnosis by obviating the need for microscopy.

Mitochondrial genomic investigation reveals a clear association between species and genotypes of Lucilia and geographic origin in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Lucilia cuprina and L. sericata (family Calliphoridae) are globally significant ectoparasites of sheep. Current literature suggests that only one of these blowfly subspecies, L. cuprina dorsalis, is a primary parasite causing myiasis (flystrike) in sheep in Australia. These species and subspecies are difficult to distinguish using morphological features. Hence, being able to accurately identify blowflies is critical for diagnosis and for understanding their relationships with their hosts and environment. METHODS: In this study, adult blowflies (5 pools of 17 flies; n = 85) were co

Regional and seasonal patterns of blowfly distribution in southern Korea: implications for forensic entomology.

Blowfly species, which play a crucial role in forensic investigations as primary colonizers of cadavers, are influenced by environmental factors. However, most research conducted on blowfly species in South Korea remains limited to a single province. We investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of forensically relevant blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the southern provinces of South Korea to enhance forensic entomology databases and improve postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. Overall, 3,934 adult blowflies representing 14 species across 5 genera were collected from 4 regions (Changny

Clinical study of Maggot therapy for Fournier's gangrene.

Fournier's Gangrene is a fulminating necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum and genitalia. Standard treatment involves immediate excision of all necrotic tissue, aggressive antibiotic coverage, and supportive medical care. Still, the infection is commonly fatal or disfiguring. Wound treatment with disinfected blowfly larvae (maggot debridement therapy or MDT) has been shown to be highly effective, with multiple studies demonstrating effective debridement, disinfection, and promotion of granulation tissue. MDT also has been associated with preservation of viable tissue and minimised blood loss.

Cryptic Myiasis by Chrysomya bezziana: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Myiasis is the invasion of living animal tissue by fly larvae. Orbital tissue infestation involvement occurs in 5% of all myiasis cases and is potentially destructive. Infection by Chrysomya bezziana is very rare in clinical practice. A 65-year-old woman with history of left eye evisceration presented to the emergency department due to a creeping sensation in the left eye socket and underwent medical and surgical treatment for C. bezziana ophthalmomyiasis. A systematic review was performed to identify ophthalmomyiasis cases caused by C. bezziana published in PubMed and Embase until December 20

Unusual presence of Ornidia robusta (Diptera: Syrphidae) causing pig myiasis in Argentina.

Myiasis is caused by dipterous larvae from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Cuterebridae, and Syrphidae families. In this work, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Chrysomya megacephala, and Ornidia robusta were identified causing vulva, ear, and leg myiasis in pigs in Tucuman province, northwestern Argentina. The report of the presence of C. hominivorax and C. megacephala is very important due to their role as myiasis-causing and disease vectors. The occurrence of Ornidia robusta is remarkable, since it constitutes the first record of myiasis in general and of myiasis in pigs in particular. L

Myiasis in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Myiasis due to parasitic fly larvae (maggots) can have major consequences for animal health and welfare. The European hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus is frequently presented in rehabilitation centres and veterinary practices due to health problems, including myiasis. In the present study, 557 hedgehogs presented at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Northern Germany during 2018-2021 were examined for the presence of dipteran eggs and larvae. Overall, 15.6% of animals carried fly eggs and/or larvae. Four different dipteran species were identified by PCR and sequencing of the internal transcribed s

The Role of Diptera and Coleoptera (Arthropoda: Insecta) in Identifying Injuries and Estimating Postmortem Interval: A Case Report.

Diptera and Coleoptera (Arthropoda: Insecta) are of great importance in forensic entomology for providing valuable information that contribute to investigations of the cause of death, cases of neglect and mistreatment or for estimating post-mortem interval (PMI), among others. Considering that the period of insect activity (PIA) reliably and accurately represents the PMI and the increasing use of entomological evidence in forensic cases, we report a case in which Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) was used as entomological evidence to estimate the PMI in a suspected d

Imported Furuncular Myiasis Due to Cordylobia anthropophaga: A Case Highlighting the Role of Ultrasonography and Morphological Confirmation.

BACKGROUND: Furuncular cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga is a rare condition in non-endemic regions and may mimic furunculosis or skin abscesses, posing a diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 24-year-old woman presented eight days after returning from Zanzibar with multiple tender erythematous nodules on the buttocks and left forearm. One larva was self-extracted, and others were removed under medical supervision. Ultrasound showed subcutaneous tracts consistent with larval infestation. Morphological analysis confirmed C. anthropophaga. The patient

Chemical profiling of developmental stages in three major flies via direct infusion mass spectrometry: Improving estimates of minimum postmortem intervals in forensic entomology.

Forensic entomology has become an essential tool for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI), especially in scenarios where traditional methods are limited. This study aimed to characterize and differentiate the chemical profiles of three major forensically relevant fly species-Chrysomya albiceps, Cochliomyia macellaria, and Lucilia cuprina-across their developmental stages. Changes in chemical profiles during larval, pupal, and pharate adult stages were monitored via ethanol-based solvent extraction followed by direct infusion mass spectrometry (DIMS). Distinct chemical fingerprints

Host-specific microbiomes of blow flies: ecological drivers and implications for pathogen carriage.

Blow flies (Lucilia sericata and Phormia regina) are necrophagous insects that interact with dense microbial reservoirs and are opportunistic vectors of human and animal pathogens. Despite constant exposure to diverse environmental microbes, it is unclear whether their bacterial communities are primarily acquired stochastically or shaped by host factors that could influence pathogen carriage. We conducted a systematic comparison of wild L. sericata and P. regina collected from seven cities across an urban-rural gradient to determine whether microbiome composition is structured by host species

The efficacy of fluazuron in the management of blowfly strike in sheep.

The blowflies Lucilia spp. and Chryomya spp. feature prominently as a leading cause of myiasis and production losses in sheep in South Africa. With chemical means of preventing and treating blowfly strike being a common manner of control, new molecules or formulations effective against blowfly strike are needed as resistance becomes more of a problem. For this study we evaluated the potential of topical application of fluazuron on sheep as an additional means to control blowflies. When pure fluazuron was applied to raw meat at the recommended dose for cattle, significant effects on adult fly d

Insights into the genetic landscape and presence of Cochliomyia hominivorax in the Caribbean.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a major parasite that causes myiasis in livestock, humans, and other warm-blooded animals in the western hemisphere. There is a permanent biological border that is maintained between Panama and Colombia, as it has been eradicated from North and Central America. However, it still exists in much of the Caribbean and South America causing an estimated annual loss of $3.6 billion dollars in South America alone. Less information is available for C. hominivorax in the Caribbean. Thus, here we examined its presence and genetic landscape in order to

Contributions to the identification of Fannia lineata (Stein, 1895) (Diptera: Fanniidae) in forensic contexts: first record in a human cadaver.

Flies in the family Fanniidae represent an important component of the entomofauna associated with body decomposition and they play an important role in the recycle of the organic matter. Forty species have been reported from the Italian territory but till now only two, Fannia scalaris and Fannia canicularis, have been reported from human cadavers on a larval stage. This paper reports the first finding of a population of Fannia lineata associated with a human cadaver in Southern Italy. The body was in an advanced, partially mummified, state of decomposition with a complex community of insects c

[A human case of internal myiasis in Korea].

A 71-year old male patient was admitted in Inha hospital due to right facial palsy, quadriplegia and aphasia. This patient was operated to replace his heart values 7 years ago and has been treated with Coumarin, an anti-coagulant drug, to prevent the formation of thrombus in the heart. A number of fly maggots continuously crawled out from the nasogastric tube set up for supplying a liquid diet and patient's mouth for 2 days until his death in the intensive care unit of hospital. These maggots were about 11.5 mm long on the average and identified as genus Lucilia belonging to family Calliphorid

[Clinical and parasitological observations on a case of disseminated furuncular myiasis caused by Cordylobia rodhaini in a man in Ethiopia].

A severe case of myiasis is reported in an Italian technician working in a forest yard in Illubabor (Ethiopia). The patient returned to Italy with fever, malaise and scattered skin lesions: these were papular at first, and later developed into furuncle-like, intensely burning boils which spread all over the body. Neutrophilic leukocytosis was present associated with increased IgA. From the lesions, 150 larvae were recovered and identified as Cordylobia rodhaini Gedoelst (Diptera, Calliphoridae), a myiasis agent adapted to various thin-skinned mammals in African forests, rarely observed in man.

Cutaneous myiasis in neglected patients with autoimmune bullous disorders: a case series.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the tissues and organs of living vertebrates and humans by fly larvae, usually those belonging to the Calliphoridae family. The larvae feed on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Pre-existing dermatological conditions and poor hygiene are predisposing factors for cutaneous myiasis, which is especially common among neglected, dependent patients. Our literature search revealed only a few case reports of cutaneous myiasis in autoimmune bullous disorders (AIBDs). Cutaneous myiasis is more common in the population of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu beca

[Nasal myiasis due to lucilia sp. in intubated patient: about one case in Morocco].

INTRODUCTION: Myiasis is the infestation of living bodies of animals and humans with fly larvae or maggots. These accidental or obligatory parasites grow in three stages in the host while feeding on his tissues. Myiasis in a hospital area is a rare situation when flies accidentally lay their eggs on patients, mostly in open wounds or cavities. Case presentation. We report a case of a 72-year-old patient admitted to a general surgery department for peritonitis, then to an intensive care unit (ICU) for septic shock where he was intubated. Some maggots were seen moving in his nasal cavity a few d
