Rivers and streams are an important pathway in the global carbon cycle, releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) from their water surfaces to the atmosphere1,2. Until now, CO2 and CH4 emitted from rivers were thought to be predominantly derived from recent (sub-decadal) biomass production and, thus, part of ecosystem respiration3-6. Here we combine new and published measurements to create a global database of the radiocarbon content of river dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), CO2 and CH4. Isotopic mass balance of our database suggests that 59 ± 17% of global river CO2 emissions are deri

Floodplain wetlands experience complex hydrological variations that make them hotspots of carbon cycling, yet the characteristics and mechanisms of carbon flux dynamics under varying hydrological states remain poorly understood. Using multi-year eddy covariance measurements in China's Poyang Lake wetland, this study quantified net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 across four distinct hydrological states: Deep Submerged (DS), Shallow Submerged (SS), Vegetated exposure (VE), and Bare exposure (BE). Results showed that intermediate hydrological states (SS and VE) maximize CO2 uptake (NEE:0.58 to -

Our recent steady-state mass-balance modeling suggests that most global carbonic-acid weathering of silicate rocks occurs in the vadose zone of aquifer systems not on the surface by atmospheric CO2. That is, the weathering solute flux is nearly equal to the total global continental riverine carbon flux, signifying little atmospheric weathering by carbonic acid. This finding challenges previous carbon models that utilize silicate weathering as a control of atmospheric CO2 levels. A robust analysis utilizing global estimates of groundwater carbon concentration generated by a geospatial machine l

Estuarine wetlands, crucial in mitigating global warming, have suffered significant degradation, necessitating innovative restoration techniques to enhance their carbon sink capacity. This study investigated the dual effects of biochar incorporation in estuarine wetlands with tidal stress, utilizing a field experiment in the Chongming Dongtan wetland and a meta-analysis for cross-study comparison. Results indicated that while biochar incorporation slightly obscured the promotion of plant CO2 fixation (with a 1.24% decrease), it still augmented carbon sink capacity by magnifying the inhibition

Coastal fronts create critical transition zones where intensified physical-biological coupling regulates aquatic biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem services. However, mechanistic insights of organic matter (OM) dynamics in response to frontal processes, along with their associated carbon sequestration and potential eco-environmental effects, remain poorly constrained due to a paucity of field observations. This study conducted a systematic investigation of dissolved OM (DOM) characteristics across seasonal cruises, integrating satellite remote sensing data, particulate OM (POM) and physicoche

Mountain rivers remain insufficiently understood within regional and global carbon cycles, particularly high-slope systems that are highly sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance and climate change. We investigated a high-slope alpine gorge river in southwestern China (Upper Min River) through five seasonal surveys in 2023, quantifying dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and water-air CO2 flux (FCO₂) and assessing their controls. DIC (8.28-58.97 mg/L; mean 32.61 mg/L) decreased from carbonate headwaters to downstream non-carbonate reaches, indicating strong carbona

Biofilms on composite carriers may contribute to organic matter transformation in mariculture effluents, but the taxa and carbon-metabolic functions underlying this process remain unclear. This study employed metagenomic sequencing and functional annotation to comprehensively analyze the microbial composition and metabolic potential involved in glycoside hydrolase (GH), glycolysis, and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in biofilms, revealing the functional characteristics of microbial communities in carbon metabolism. The results showed high microbial diversity in various carbon metabolism pa

The term 'one-carbon metabolism' is commonly used to describe 3 separate metabolic processes: folate metabolism, the homocysteine remethylation cycle, and the transsulfuration pathway. Folate metabolism concerns the biochemical reactions in which endogenous and exogenous one-carbon units are transferred to tetrahydrofolates. The remethylation cycle is used for the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine with one-carbon units that come from folate. This methionine is thenfused for the synthesis of S-adenosyl methionine, which is a general donor of methyl groups for many biochemical reactions

The economic viability of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) relies on effectively balancing carbon mitigation benefits with development costs. This study addresses this issue by establishing a comprehensive social and environmental benefit (SEB) assessment model integrating life cycle assessment and life cycle cost methodologies. The aim is to quantify and analyze the economic costs and carbon reduction potential of BEVs throughout their life cycle, focusing on the case study of Shanghai. The findings highlight substantial carbon benefits achieved by BEVs. However, they also reveal that these b

As a metallurgical solid waste rich in active calcium oxide, magnesium slag (MS) is endowed with significant carbon dioxide sequestration potential due to its inherent properties, providing a feasible path for the simultaneous solution of waste residue disposal and carbon dioxide emission reduction. However, current research has neither clarified the kinetic mechanism (core theoretical support for carbon dioxide sequestration industrialization) nor systematically evaluated the life cycle environmental impacts of MS's two carbonation routes (direct or indirect leaching carbonation). To address

Efficient carbon-sequestering microorganisms are crucial for enhancing soil quality and reducing carbon emissions, particularly in semiarid coal mining areas. In this study, we analyzed the soil carbon-fixing microbial taxa and pathways in the Shendong mining area via high-throughput sequencing, and concluded that their main carbon sequestering pathway is the reduced citrate cycle (rTCA cycle), which has the potential for microbial carbon sequestration. Bacterial strains with high CO2 sequestration efficiency were isolated and identified, and their potential for improving soil carbon storage a

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems in the United States have increasingly turned toward the use of disposable medical equipment in an attempt to save time, lower costs, and reduce the transmission of infections. However, the use of disposable instruments is associated with increased solid waste production and may have negative impacts on the environment, such as increased greenhouse gas emissions.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to inform this discussion; we applied life cycle assessment methods to evaluate the carbon footprints of 3 vaginal specula: a single-use acrylic model and 2 reus

Biogeochemical cycles, including the microbially mediated carbon and nitrogen cycles, within soils govern the health status of environments, and are impacted, and impact upon, climate change. Anthropogenic activities have shifted the amounts and forms of carbon and nitrogen within soils. Whilst access to carbon and nitrogen is essential for plant growth and microbial food webs, excess carbon and nitrogen can lead to pollution via leaching into groundwater and the release of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, contributing to global warming. In addition, changes

Tropical forests act as important global carbon sinks1, and Earth System Models predict increasing near-term carbon sink capacity for these forests, with elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration thought to stimulate tree growth2,3. However, current forest inventory data analyses suggest that the carbon sink capacity of intact tropical forests may be in decline, portending a possible future switch from carbon sinks to carbon sources3-7. Here we use long-term forest inventory data (1971-2019) from Australian moist tropical forests and a causal inference framework8-10 to assess the carbo

Metabolic remodelling underlies tumour progression. However, how metabolites act as signalling molecules to support cancer cell proliferation remains unclear. Here we show that argininosuccinate (ASA), a key intermediate of the urea cycle, promotes purine nucleoside biosynthesis in tyrosine kinase-driven haematological malignancies. Mechanistically, BCR-ABL phosphorylates argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1), which increases ASA production from citrulline. ASA directly binds cytosolic 5'-nucleotidase II (NT5C2) and enhances its nucleosidase activity. The resulting purine nucleosides serve as a

RuBisCO (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is the primary enzyme responsible for carbon fixation in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, yet it remains one of the most inefficient enzymes in nature. Its slow catalytic rate, low specificity for CO₂ over O₂, and susceptibility to inhibition and heat stress limit photosynthetic efficiency and crop productivity, particularly under fluctuating environmental conditions. This review highlights current strategies to enhance RuBisCO performance. These include direct mutagenesis, ancestral protein reconstruction, and the incorporation of chim

Advances in carbon capture and gas fermentation technologies enable the sustainable production of one-carbon (C1) and C2 organic molecules, such as formate and acetate, by recycling CO2 and organic wastes. Refining C1 and C2 feedstocks into food and other organic ingredients is essential for establishing a carbon-neutral economy. However, current C1/C2-utilizing microbial refinery platforms have yet to achieve ideal carbon efficiency at industrial scales. We critically review progress in innovating metabolic systems across heterotrophic, photosynthetic, and gas fermentation microbial platforms

In deserts that cover one-third of the Earth's terrain, soil cyanobacteria and algae are key carbon dioxide (CO2) fixers because few other plants can tolerate intense solar radiation, prolonged desiccation, and extreme temperature shifts. Extensively studied resilience of cyanobacteria and algae to environmental stresses explains their survival in deserts rather than their ubiquitous coexistence. To coexist, prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae need to grow at similar rates on rare occasions when vital water becomes available. To test that, we incubated illuminated soil samples colle

UNLABELLED: The rising atmospheric concentration of CO2 is a major concern to society due to its global warming potential. In soils, CO2-fixing microorganisms are preventing some of the CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Yet, the controls of dark CO2 fixation are rarely studied in situ. Here, we examined the gene and transcript abundance of key genes involved in microbial CO2 fixation along major environmental gradients within estuarine wetlands. A combined multi-omics approach incorporating metabarcoding, deep metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic analyses confirmed that wetland microbiota harbo
