Ductus venosus agenesis (DVA) is a rare congenital anomaly of the fetal circulation defined by an absence of the physiological shunt connecting the hepatic-systemic system with the portal-umbilical venous system. Diagnosis relies on ultrasound and color Doppler imaging, mainly during the second trimester. We report the case of a fetus in a 34-year-old patient in whom DVA was diagnosed at 30 weeks gestation. Ultrasound revealed an extrahepatic umbilical vein draining directly into the right atrium that was associated with cardiomegaly. Molecular karyotyping was normal. Weekly ultrasound examina

INTRODUCTION: In the presence of fetal cardiomegaly, when there is no cardiac malformation or dysfunction, systemic or pulmonary arteriovenous malformations that may cause volume loading should be sought. We aimed to present a fetus who had cardiomegaly and left pulmonary artery-left atrial fistula and who underwent transcatheter closure in the early postnatal period.
CASE PRESENTATION: 23-week fetus referred because of severe cardiomegaly on screening obstetric ultrasonography. Fetal echocardiography revealed fistulous connection between dilated left pulmonary artery and left atrium with hig

Pseudoaneurysm of the left ventricle is a rare late complication of myocardial infarction. So-called non-coronary forms have been described in young people. In this context, we report three cases. Mr. M.B., aged 20, consulted for chest pain associated with palpitations. Cardiovascular examination found a pulsatile, expanding precordial bulging and a mesocardiac systolo-diastolic murmur. We noted a sinus rhythm with ventricular extrasystoles on ECG. The chest radiograph showed cardiomegaly and aneurysmal deformation of the left lower heart border. Doppler echocardiography showed a large left ve

The primary objective of this study was to assess how HIV has influenced the spectrum of heart diseases in Botswana and to examine the HIV prevalence among patients with cardiomegaly. The secondary objective was to evaluate the value of the cardiothoracic (CT) ratio on chest radiography (CXR) as a screening tool for cardiac disease. In total, 179 patients (age 14-97 years) with cardiomegaly (all CT ratios >0.53 on CXR) and known HIV status were referred to Botswana's sole hospital-based echocardiographic centre. Clinical examination and echocardiography were performed. Cardiomyopathy (36.9%),

From 1951 to 1981 we evaluated 79 adult patients with ventricular septal defect with no other associated cardiac malformations. There were 42 men and 37 women ranging in age from 18 to 59 years (mean 34 years). We divided our patients into 67 patients treated medically and 12 surgically. Follow-up was obtained on 78 of 79 patients (99%). All patients were followed up for 1 month to 25 years (mean 9 years). Their ages at follow-up ranged from 24 to 70 years (mean 42 years). Nonsurgically treated patients who were New York Heart Association functional class I before treatment had a significantly

UNLABELLED: We investigated the clinical and biochemical characteristics of a 6-year-old Japanese boy with very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD) deficiency. He had hypoketotic hypoglycaemia, exercise- and fasting-induced lethargy, hepatomegaly and cardiomegaly. Significant laboratory findings included elevated plasma levels of creatine phosphokinase and acyl-carnitine and a fatty liver at biopsy suggesting a diagnosis of VLCAD deficiency.
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency was supported by the results of acyl-CoA dehydrogenase activity for

A 37-week gestation male boy was born to a gravida seven para six mother by spontaneous vertex delivery at home. The baby cried at birth. On day 3 of life, he was admitted for respiratory distress. Physical examination revealed ectrodactyly, thin dry skin, anomalous tear duct with cardiomegaly. X-ray revealed absent radii, cardiomegaly and hemivertebra at L1. Echocardiogram revealed perimembranous type of ventricular septal defect. A diagnosis of Ectodermal Dysplasia Ectrodactyly Clefting Syndrome with ventricular septal defect was made. He was managed conservatively in the nursery. However, h

BACKGROUND: Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging is important for diagnosing pulmonary and cardiothoracic conditions, but timely access remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries. This study characterized radiographic abnormalities, examined associated clinical factors, evaluated exploratory clinical metadata-based prediction models, and assessed barriers to CXR utilization in southwestern Uganda.
METHODS: This facility-based observational pilot study included 422 adults undergoing chest radiography for suspected pulmonary or cardiothoracic disease at two healthcare facilities. Prospective

A 50-year-old woman with rheumatic heart disease, mitral stenosis, and critical isolated left main ostial stenosis was successfully treated by mitral valve replacement, tricuspid annuloplasty, and surgery of left main osteoplasty and is reported for its rarity. Notable clinical findings included an intermittently irregular pulse, blood pressure of 100/70 mmHg, cardiomegaly, a diastolic precordial thrill, a mid-diastolic murmur without presystolic accentuation that was loudest at the mitral area. Chest radiograph revealed cardiomegaly with a cardiothoracic ratio of 0.7 due to enlarged right atr

Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to pediatric chest radiographs are yet scarce. This study evaluated whether AI-based software developed for adult chest radiographs can be used for pediatric chest radiographs. Pediatric patients (≤ 18 years old) who underwent chest radiographs from March to May 2021 were included retrospectively. An AI-based lesion detection software assessed the presence of nodules, consolidation, fibrosis, atelectasis, cardiomegaly, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and pneumoperitoneum. Using the pediatric radiologist's results as standard reference, we assessed the diagn

A 1-month-old crossbred calf was referred for examination due to marked systolic heart murmurs and poor growth. The heart murmur was most audible on the right side of the cranial thorax. Cardiomegaly was evident on chest radiography, and echocardiography demonstrated aortic regurgitation and decreased fractional shortening. Cardiomegaly, aortic root dilation and cardiac displacement were confirmed by computed tomography. At necropsy, the heart was enlarged, and all three aortic valve leaflets were irregularly shaped. In calves with chronic aortic insufficiency, remodeling displacement of the h

Absence of the ductus venosus (ADV) is a rare vascular anomaly. Its prognosis depends on the pathway of the umbilical flow to the systemic venous circulation, and the presence or absence of associated structural or chromosomal anomalies, sometimes resulting in hydrops fetalis. In cases with isolated ADV in the absence of associated anomalies, survival rates are as high as 85%, depending on the shunt situation. Here, we report a patient with ADV and extrahepatic umbilical vein drainage with favorable outcome after intrauterine reversal of early signs of cardiac failure. Diagnosis was made after

We describe a case of large chorioangioma diagnosed at 22 weeks of gestation. As the tumour progressively enlarged to 8 cm with fetal cardiomegaly and increased middle cerebral arterial peak systolic velocity, embolisation of its feeding artery by percutaneous injection of cyanoacrylate was performed under ultrasound guidance. Devascularisation was immediate and complete, and the fetal cardiomegaly and anaemic features resolved after 3 weeks. A healthy infant was born at 34 weeks of gestation following spontaneous preterm labour. Pathological examination of the placenta confirmed an infarcted

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cardiac size in normal German shepherd dogs (GSD) using the two-dimensional cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) and to use this measure for diagnosing GSD with altered cardiac size.
ANIMALS: One hundred clinically normal GSD as well as 46 GSD with altered cardiac size (microcardia or cardiomegaly).
METHODS: The CTR was computed as the percentage area of the cardiac silhouette relative to the area of the dog's thorax. Measurements were performed using a digital software program on lateral and ventro-dorsal radiographs at the points of peak inspiration and expiration. Receiver o

Cantu syndrome is an autosomal dominant overgrowth syndrome associated with facial dysmorphism, congenital hypertrichosis, and cardiomegaly. Some affected individuals show bone undermodeling of variable severity. Recent investigations revealed that the disorder is caused by a mutation in ABCC9, encoding a regulatory SUR2 subunit of an ATP-sensitive potassium channel mainly expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle as well as vascular smooth muscle. We report here on a Japanese family with this syndrome. An affected boy and his father had a novel missense mutation in ABCC9. Each patient had a co

ADP-ribosylation is a reversible reaction with ADP-ribosyltransferases catalyzing the forward reaction and ADP-ribose-acceptor hydrolases (ARHs) hydrolyzing the ADP-ribose acceptor bond. ARH2 is a member of the 39-kDa ARH family (ARH1-3), which is expressed in heart and skeletal muscle. ARH2 failed to exhibit any in vitro enzymatic activity. To determine its possible in vivo activities, Arh2 -knockout (KO) and - heterozygous (Het) mice were generated using CRISPR-Cas9. Arh2 -KO mice exhibited decreased cardiac contractility by MRI, echocardiography and dobutamine stress with cardiomegaly and a

The aim of this study was to retrospectively assess the clinical usefulness of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations for determining the severity of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs. Plasma ANP levels were found to be significantly higher in dogs with MMVD compared to healthy dogs, and plasma ANP levels increased significantly in dogs with progressive heart failure. In dogs with MMVD, stepwise regression analysis revealed that the left atrium/aorta ratio and fractional shortening could be used to predict the plasma ANP concentration. These results indicated that

An 84-year-old woman is reported whose death was associated with strenuous exercise on an extremely hot day (maximum temperature=43.1 °C, 109.6 °F). At autopsy there was evidence of exposure to high environmental temperatures with early putrefactive changes and mummification. There was underlying cardiomegaly with mild pulmonary emphysema. No significant injuries were detected. Toxicology revealed therapeutic levels of oxybutynin prescribed for urinary stress incontinence. Death was considered to be heat related, exacerbated by oxybutynin therapy, exercise, and cardiomegaly. Given that it has
